THE NORI e/S PETERS CO" PHOm-LITHQ. WASHINGTON. D. L

' THOMAS H. RADOLIFEE, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.-
BALL-COCK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS H. RAD- CLIFFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and [useful Improvements in Balluse in connection with flushing tanks and an object of the invention is to provide a novel and'im'proved ball-cock so arranged and-constructed as to increase the efficiency and durability of the device and to permit of the ready and convenient removal and replacement of any of the parts which are liable to wear or which require to be renewed. g
The invention also has for an object to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the rod and float are prevented from falling too low within the tanlnwhereby it is assured that the ball-cock is maintained open under full pressure until the tank is almost full.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the refilling tube is adapted to be connectedtherewith in close proximity to the valve proper whereby a requisite flow through the refilling tube is assured throughout substantially the entire period of refilling the tank.
The invention also consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered-simpler, less'expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use all as will be herein-,
after more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanving drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a ball cock constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the'device as shown in Specification of Letters Patent.
Fig. .1; Fig. 3 is a view" similar to Fig. 2,.
ment of my invention.
As disclosed in the accompanying draw- .ings, 1 denotes a casting of suitable dimensions having disposed longitudinally thereof the conduit 2 communicating'at' one end Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed December 6, 1913. Serial No. 805,133.
with thetubular depending nipple or con- -nection 3 having its lower end portion inter iorly threaded, as at 4, whereby a proper unlon Wltll a supply pipe may be effected with convenience. The opposite, extremity of the conduit 2 1s m communication with r reduced portion immediatelyadjacent the opening? theretliroughbeing provided with the annular dependingv flange 8, whereby a .valve seat .is afforded. with which is adapted to coact the valve 9 carried by the rod 10 projecting through the sleeve 11 in threaded engagement with. thenipple -5. Intermediate. the nipples 3 and 5 the casting is pro- .vided with the 'dependingnipple 12in communication with the nipple 5 adiacent the inner end thereof through the medium of the .by-pass 14, the lowerleXtremity of such intermediate nipple 12 being herein shown as screw-threaded, asat' 15,. to afford requisite connection or coupling with a suitable discharge pipe through which the fluid passbelieved to be self-evident.
The lower or free end portion of the valve stem 10 is provided with an elongated longitudinally directed slot 16throughwhich is adapted to pass the operating lever 17, one end of which being pivotally supported, as at 18, between the spaced ears 19 projecting or depending from the outer end of the sleeve 11, while the opposite extremity of such lever 17 .is formed. to afford a socket member 20, whereby suitable connection may be had with a suitable rod or stem 7 (not shown), to. the outer or opposite end of which a conventional ball or float is adapted to be connected. H
Intermediate its length, the sleeve 11 is provided with the annular flange 21 which is adapted to contact with the free extremity .of the nipple 5, and it is to be observed that the direction in which the lever 17 may extend relatively to the casting may be determined by interposing between such annular fiangeQl and the adjacent extremity of the nipple 5 a washer 22 of requisite thickness, the thickness of such washer, as is believed to be clearly apparent, determining the adjustment of the lever. It is also to be observed that a comparatively short stroke of the rod 10 is required to seat or unseat-the valve 9. By this arrangement it is thoughtto be obvious that the valve is open for the flow of the fluid therethrough under full pressure until the tank is substantially entirely refilled.
In order to afford a proper connection for a conventional refilling tube (not shown), I have .in communication with the nipple 5 the laterally directed nipple 23, whereby a convenient connection with a refilling tube may be effected and by having this nipple 23 positioned as herein set forth, it will be observed that a flow of fluid throughfthe re-- filling tube will occur throughout the period the valve 9 is in open adjustment.
From the foregoing description, it is thought tobe obvious that a ball-cock constructed. in accordance with my invention is of ane'xtremelysimple'and comparatively from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having'thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the class described, a casting comprising a chamber and three integral depending nipples communicating with the chamber and adjacent to one another, the first nipple adapted for connection with a supply pipe, the second nipple adapted for connection with a discharge pipe and communicating with the chamber through a by-pass, an integral valve seat between the chamber and by-pass, and valve mechanism in the third-nipple and cooperating with the seat for controlling the passage of fluid from the chamberto the by-pass.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. RADCLIFFE. lVitnesses:
