GUN-MOUNT.
Speciilcation of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application: lediApril 5, 1.915. Serial No. 19,212.
T0 all 11g/0m t may concern Be it lmown that il, ALEXANDER M ICLAUS, Jr., a subject of the King of Roumanie, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Guny Mounts; and I do hereby declare the followquickly applied to the-gun or to the means of support.
In modern warfare the Nfacility with which the 'munitions of war may be transported from 'pl'ace Vto place and set up foruse, or removed when desired, is u very important factor. and is often e determining factor in a battle, or even in a campaign, and this invention is intended to especially provide a light portable gun ".mount adapted to be used in connection with light artillery, and especially lwith mitrailleuse, or other light automatic guns of similar caliber and high speed of firing. v
My invention is especially intendedto provide n mount for the gun described and claimed in my applicationv entitled Improvements in automatic guns, tiled December 2, 1914, Serial No. 875146, and many of the details of the mount shown in the present application are described in my application aforesaid.
My invention will lie/'understood by refer ence to the accompanying drawings which k bigure 1 shows a central vertical section through the lower portion ofthe mount, but the upper portion of the mount being shown in elevation and the gun being shown in dotted lines, the section being alongthe lines 1-1 of Fig;,7, and 7-7 of Fig. 6, looking in the direction of the arrows; Fig. 2 isa view showing the upper portion of the mount of Fig. 1 on a larger scale;A Fig. 3 is a plan view of the laterally adjustable lcarriage used for transporting the gun and mount, parts being broken away; Fig. 4 shows a section along the line 4-4 o'f Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows, parts being shown in elevation.; Fig. 5 is a detail shoivmg the engagement of the toggle arms of the carriage shown in Fig. 3; Fig. G is a side elevation of the socket piece used in transporting the mount on the carriage or chamber used as a standard for firing the gun fronte boat or other fixed platform: Fig. l shows a section along the line 7-7 of Fig. 6, and looking in the direction of the arrows, parts being shown in elevation; Fig. 8 shows the tripod and gun mount swung up parallel to the barrel of the gun for convenience of packing same either on an animal, or in a bout or other convevancez` 1g. 9 shows av section along the line 99 of Fig. 2, looking down, parts bein shown in elevation; and Fig. 10 is a detai view showing thc operation of the catch for holding the Worm spindle, and Worm, out of engagement.
- :'llhe gun 1-may be of any suitable type, preferably a light automatic gun of the character shown in my application aforesaid. which gun is indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1, 2 and 8. Rigidly connected to the gun is la supporting block 2. providedat its 'heel with a worm sector 3. The support ing block 2 is connected by the pivot bolt 4 to the side plates 5 of the yoke 6, which side plates are rigidly attached to the circular base pla-'te 7 which is provided with a downwardly-projecting stem 8, notched us :It 9, which stem isfndnptcd to be swiveled in the auxiliary support for the mount, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The side plates 5 of the yoke lare cut away es at 10 to give clearance for the Worin il mounted on the spindle 1Q, which Spindle carries the hand Wheel 13 for turning the worm and elevating and depressing the gun.
This hand wheel 13 mav be provided with a.'
handle 14 if desired. The Worm spindle 12 is reduced near its forward end, 11s-at 15,
and passes through the cylindrical bearing block 1G, which is journaled in the side plates `5-of the yoke 6 so as tov permit the Worm spindle to swing in the vertical plane aliont the axis of said bearing block 16, and the Worm spindle is held against `being drawn out of said bearing block 16 by means of n suitable collar 1T and pin 18. This collar may he in the form of a rectan gular plate, if desired, its shown iii Figs. '2 and 9, so as to permit the Worm spindle l2 to be swung in a vertical plane, and tends to steady the same against lateral vibration.
ends are pivotcd to the cross head 8O which slides on the trail TQ. .By sliding the cross head 80 backward or forward on thc trail, the connecting rods S2 and H2 serre as a toggle joint to bring the wheels closer together, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, or to move them farther apart as shown in full lines in said figure. Thus the carriagel is laterally collapsible and may be used to run on a narrow trail, when desired, or spread out to run on a wide road. i\lore over, by bringing the wheels as close together as practicable the carriage takes up very little space in transportation by rail. wagon, or boat, and may be convenient-hr hidden or concealed when not in use.
It will be noted that for use in a boat or moving platform it may be desirable to mount the cylinder in any suitable step and fire the gun as from a vstandard mount, and in this case the tripod legs may be either lett in place or not used. or may be removed from their housing, or the entire, tripod ar-- rangement may, be taken oil' the stem 8, and the amount used directly on the standard as desired.
Wherever practicable, the parte are made of hollow light metal ot great rigidity and strength, such, for instance, as vanadium Steel".
Thus it will be seen that 'l have provided a light portable mount which may be readily transported either attached to or separate from the gun; and may be quickly mounted on.its transporting carriage, or detached therefrom; and which may be quickly put into use either on the tripod mount or ou a standard mount. lt will also be seen that I provide a collapsible carriage to be used in connection with the mount aforesaid, which is suited to ruu through narrow passes, or trails, in forests or elsewhere, or narrow roads generally, and the gage oi which may be expanded or contracted as del sired.
While I have illustrated and described one embodiment of the invention it will be obvious that various modifications might be made in the device and in the coustructimi, combination and arrangement of parts which could be used without departing lfrom the spirit of my invention. i
Having thus described my invention what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. 'lhe combination with the gun and a supporting member rigidly attached thereto, and provided with worm teeth. of ay yoke hinged to said supporting member and provided with a worm adapted to engage said Worm teeth and to 'be thrown om of engagement therewith if desired, and means for supporting said yoke, substantially as described.
