Be it known that we, BENJAMINJ. SHI- Mo'rA and GORDON B. CARAwAY,.citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at
Veseli, in the county of Riceand State of Minnesota, and at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have in vented new and .useful Improvements in Egg-Candling Apparatus, oflwhich the following is a specication.
Our invention relates toan egg tester, in which a plurality of eggs may be tested concurrently. v
`The primary object of our invention is the production lof kan egg tester, which is adapted to concentratel as much light as possible On the eggs to be tested, and to A provide a hood in which the eggs can be viewed during the testing operation without side light decreasing the efficiency of the apparatus.
A further object is -to-provide a casing which is so constructed` that. it can be used either by artificial or sun light. The reflector and back 4 may be made of any suitable material, it being preferred that they be provided withinner polished reflectingsurfaces, so as to concentrate a maximuin amount of light upon the eggs.
When it vis desired to use light directly from 'the sun or an outside source instead of lamps C, the back 4 may be raised and the reflector D clination. f l l Y The hood F is formed by the partition 2,
adjusted at the properiny back 14:, top 15, and walls 6 and 7, all of said parts being opaque and preferably colored black, on their inner surfaces, so as to intensify the darkness of the space in the hood; The forward lower edge of the hood is also formed with anoutwardly and upwardly slanting shade 16, which is formed' as an integral part of thefrontwall 17 ofthe receptacle. The top wall 15 is also formed with a downwardly and forwardly slanting shade 18.V Thefshades 16 and 18y serve to assist in shielding the eggs whichY are being tested from Outside light and thus intensify light passing upwardly through the eggs. Immediately back of the eggs and secured to the back ,14 Vis a mirror 19, whichv f serves to aid in examining the eggs in the apertures indirectly.

In accordance with the patent statutes, we have described the principles of operation of our invention, together with the apparatus, which we now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but we desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative, and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described our'invention, what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is l. An egg tester7 comprising, in combination, a casing having a receptacle and a hood above said receptacle, said receptacle and hood being separated by an apertured partition in the apertures of which the eggs to be tested may be placed, a back closing said receptacle and movable thereon to ad- 'mit sunlight into said receptacle when moved into open position and a reflector having its lower end resting on the floor in said receptacle and its upper end vertically adjustable on the sides of said receptacle, said hood partly enveloping the eggs held in said apertures to obscure light originating from above said eggs.
2. An egg tester, comprising, in combination, a casing forming two compartments separated in elevation by an apertured partition, in the apertures of which eggs to be tested are adapted to be placed, one of said compartments below said partition forming 40 a lamp receptacle and the other of said compartments forming a hood adapted to shield the eggs held by said apertured partition from outside light, a reflector in said receptacle adapted to concentrate light upwardly upon the eggs held in said apertures7 and said hood being formed with overhanging shades surrounding` an opening and adapted to assist in Shielding light from above the eggs and a mirror back of the eggs held in said apertures adapted to disclose a portion of the eggs to view.
