Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FREDERICK IInNDRIcKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garfield, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum-Beaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in drum heaters and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with bass drums, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the same may be operated with convenience and facility through the medium of a pedal and whereby the device may be readily and effectively clamped in operative position upon the drum.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character capable of striking both the drum and the cymbal and wherein the striking arm for the cymbal may be readily and quickly adjusted into or out of operative position.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and ar rangement of the several parts of my improved drum beater whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a drum beater constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in applied position, the coacting drum being shown in section; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 1, with the cymbal in fragment; Fig. 3 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of my improved beater, with the rod and its concomitant parts omitted; and Fig. 4 is a view, detached, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating in detail the arrangement of the anti-friction means as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 11 denote side bars of predetermined configuration, the inner extremities whereof being adapted to overlie a hoop H of the drum D and projecting upwardly from the side members are the standards 2, to be hereinafter more particularly referred to. Each of the rear standards 2 is provided with the laterally disposed stub shaft 3 overlying the adjacent beam 1 and rotatably supported by said stub shaft 3 is the clamp member 4: also adapted to overlie the hoop H and to coact with the adjacent extremity of the side member 1 whereby the device may be effectively clamped in operative position upon the drum D. As herein disclosed, the clamping action is created through the medium of the thumb screw 5 threaded through the tail 6 of the clamp member 4 and coacting with the member 1, as is believed to be clearly apparent. As herein disclosed, the rear uprights 2 are of a greater height than the forward uprights and all of said uprights are provided in their upper extremities with the vertically disposed open end slots 7. In the slots 7 of the rear uprights 2 is mounted the shaft 8, the periphery whereof being threaded to receive the cone members 9 affording, when assembled, a race-way 10 in which are positioned the anti-friction members 11 herein shown as conventional ball bearings adapted to engage the inner surface of the opening 12 produced in an extremity of the lever 14, it being understood that the shaft 8 extends through said opening and that the cone members 9 project therein from the opposite sides of the lever, as is believed to be clearly shown in the accompanying drawings. The extremities of the shaft 8 are engaged bv the clamping members 15 herein shown as conventional bolts which serve to prevent the shaft 8 from becoming 10 displaced. The opposite extremity of the lever 14: is provided with a second opening 16 through which is directed a shaft 17 provided with the cone members 18 similar to the cone members 9, hereinbefore referred to, and with which coact the anti-friction members 19. The shaft 17 projects a sufficient distance beyond the opposite sides of the lever 14: as to be engaged within the laterally disposed open slots 20 produced in the extremities of the spaced levers 21, the opposite extremities of said levers being provided with reversely directed open slots 22 in which is received the opposite extremities of a shaft 23 disposed through an opening 2 produced in the rear extremity of the pedal 25 and it is to be observed that the shaft 23 is provided with the cone members 26 of the character of the cone members hereinbefore set forth, and with which coact the anti-friction members 27, as is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains.
In the slots 7 of the forward uprights 2 is mounted the shaft 28 disposed through an opening 29 produced in the pedal 25 inter mediate the length thereof, said shaft having operatively engaged therewith the cone members 30 of the character of the cone members that have been previously referred to and with which coact the anti-friction members 31. It might be well to state that the shafts 17 and 28 have coacting therewith the clamping members 32 also disclosed herein as conventional nuts.
The rear extremity of the lever 14 is provided with the upstanding extensions 33 provided with the threaded recess 34 in which is adapted to be engaged the threaded extremity of the rod 35, the threaded portion 36 of the rod having mounted thereon the wing nut 36 serving as a medium to lock the rod in assembled position. The opposite extremity of the rod 35 is provided with the beater 37 formed preferably of solid felt and which is adapted to strike the drum in a well known manner upon the depression of the pedal 25 and in order to create a re turn stroke of the rod 35, I find it of advantage to interpose between the levers 21 and the forward uprights 2, the members 38 herein disclosed as coil springs and in order to limit the return stroke of the rod, I find it of advantage to interpose between the inner extremity of the pedal 25 and the inner end of the lever 1a the expansible member 39.
In order that the cymbal C may be struck in unison with the drum D, I find it of advantage to adjustably secure upon the rod 35 the clamp member 40, herein disclosed as comprising a block having a split extremity through which the rod is directed and with which coacts the clamping bolt 41 and wing nut 42 of conventional construction. The opposite extremity of the block is bifurcated as indicated at 4'3 and pivotally supported within the kerf thereof is an extremity of the striker arm 44 provided with a head 45 which is adapted to engage the cymbal C. It will be observed that at such times when it is desired that the drum D be sounded independently of the cymbals, it is only necessary to swing the striker arm inwardly out of the path of the cymbal and vice versa.
While the cymbal C may be supported in any manner desired, I prefer to employ the elongated arm 45 provided with a longi tudinally disposed elongated slot 46 through which is directed the cymbal engaging means 47 of conventional form, while one extremity of the arm 45 is provided with the clamping means 48 adapted to engage a hoop H of the drum D.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a drum beater constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departture from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
if claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising side members provided with clamping means, uprights projecting from the side members, a pedal pivotally sup ported between certain of the uprights, a rod pivotally mounted between the remaining of the uprights at a point above the pivotal connection of the pedal, said rod being provided with a beater, a lever connection between the pedal and the rod, a retractable connection between the lever and an upright for supporting the pedal, and a retractable connection between the inner end of the pedal and the lower end of the rod.
2. A device of the character described comprising side members provided with clamping means at one end thereof, uprights projecting from the side members adjacent the opposite extremities of the side members, the uprights adjacent the clamping means being longer than the uprights at the opposite ends of the side members, a pedal pivotally supported intermediate its length between the shorter uprights, a. rod pivotally mounted between the upper extremities of the longer uprights, said rod being provided with a beater, a lever eonneetion between the inner end of the pedal and the rod, :1 spring connected with the lever intermediate its length and with one of the shorter uprights, and a spring connecting the inner extremity of the pedal and the lower extremity of the rod.
