M. ROHRER TONGUE FOR HARVESTERS.
No. 114,203. Patented Apr. 25, 1871.

duet $21M MARTIN ROHRER, OF P-OLO,'ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 114,203, dated April 25, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONGUES FOR HARVESTERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN ROHRER, of P010, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Tongue for Harvesters and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are top views, showing the tongue in two positions, and
Figure 2 is a side elevation.
This invention has for its object to enable a harvester to be turned in the smallest possible space, and it therefore relates to a tongue made in two parts, which are hinged together and provided with a latch device for holding the two parts of the tongue in line as long as the draft is forward, which latch device is to be raised and the forward part of the tongue swung to one side prior to the turning of the machine.
Referring to the drawing A is the harvester-frame.
I), the rear part of the tongue, the same being firmly atfixed to the frame in the usual manner.
0, the forward part of the tongue.
To one side of the part a, near its rear end, one leaf, d, of a hinge is secured, which leaf is hung upon a pin, 0, standing between plates f, which extend forward from the upper and lower sides of the part b of the tongue. By means of the pin and leaf the two parts of the tongue arejointed together.
To the top of the upper plate f is attached the rear end of a spring latch-bar, g, which bears at its front end a pin that extends downward through said upper plate and enters an orifice made fbr its reception in the front part of the tongue, when said front part is in line with the rear part of the tongue. By this device the two parts of the tongue are held together as one piece.
Between the latch-bar g and the upper plate f is placed a plate, 1', the same being secured at its rear end to a pin, 71-, that is mounted in lugs n crosswise of the upper plate f and passes beneath the latch-bar g.
To one end of the pin it is attached an arm, m, by pressing upon which with hand'or foot the operator is enabled'to raise the latch-bar g far enough to lift the pin belonging to the same out of connection with the front part c of the tongue.
The same result may be effected by means of another arm, m, extending forward from the end of the pin h, when a cord is fastened to the extremity of said arm and carried 'back to the drivers seat.
By pulling on the cord the latch-pin may be raised. This being, by either of the described devices, accomplished, the front part c of the tongue may be swung around upon its pivot c.
To prevent the team from swinging the part 0 too far around, a plate, 0, is secured to one side of said part c, which plate passes between the plates f, and has at its rear end a head, r, that, when the part c has been swung round far enough, comes in contact with the plates f and prevents further swinging.
When the front part c is again turned into line with the rear part b of the tongue the plate 0 and its head 0* prevent its swinging too far to the other side.
The lower end of the latch-pin is beveled on one side, so that when the part c of the tongue in swinging in strikes the latch-pin the latter easily mounts up over it, and so falls readily into the orifice therein.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The parts b c of the tongue, in combination with the plates clf 0, pin e, and head 'r, as specified.
2. The parts I) c of the tongue, in combination with the plate at, pin 0, latch-bar g, and lifting arrangement h t m, as described.
MARTIN ROHRER.
