To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. CHoT'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suction Apparatus for Dental Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dental casting apparatus and has for its object the provision of a simple and effective apparatus for this purpose, a special object of the invention being to provide an apparatus of this character by means of which the force exerted in forcing the molten metal into the mold or crucible may be readily varied and predetermined.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises an elongated cylinder 1 which may, if desired, be formed ofan ordinary piece of steel tubing. This cylinder is provided with a longitudinal slot 2 in one side thereof and with locking or positioning notches 3 in one edge of said slot, as shown in Fig. 1. A pump piston 4 is arranged to reciprocate in the upper portion of cylinder 1, said pump piston being pivotally connected to the upper end of another tube 5 by means of a pivot pin 6, as shown. A tension spring 7 is anchored at its upper end to pivot pin 6 and at its lower end to a transverse pin or rod 8 traversing the lower portion of cylinder 1, as shown. An operating handle 9 is secured to tube 5 by means of a threaded stem 10 which passes through slot 2 and is adapted to engage in any of the notches 3.
Another operating handle 11 is secured to cyllnder l to facilitate manipulations of handle 9 when cylinder 1 is not securely anchored in position. By this arrangement it will be-observed that handle'9 may be employed to force piston 4 to different positions in cylinder 1, and that said piston may be readily locked in these different positions by engaging the stem 10 of handle 9 in the corresponding notch 3. Handle 9 is readily released from the corresponding notch 3 by rotating the same slightly, whereupon piston 4 will be caused to make a sudden operative stroke under the influence of the tension in spring 7, and the length of the stroke will depend upon the particular notch 3 in which the handle was previously locked. By pivoting piston 4 to tube 5 the same is given a freedom to assume a proper position in tube 1, thus facilitating the packing of said piston and rendering the packing thereof very efi ective.
The upper end of cylinder 1 is closed by a threaded cap 12 which is provided with an upstanding threaded nipple 13, as shown. A hollow flask or crucible support 14 is provided with a downwardly extending threaded nipple 15 which is detachably secured to nipple 13 by means of a threaded union 16, as will be readily understood. The bottom of the interior of the support 14 is covered by a wire mesh straining plate 17 and a straining or filtering filling 18, which may be of cotton or other suitable material, is placed in support 14 for the purpose of straining or filtering the air or other gas passing through support 14 and into the upper end of cylinder 1. Support 14 is provided with a removable top 19 threaded thereto and having a plurality of perforations 20 therein. This support is also provided with a plurality of positioning pins 21 adapted to position a flask or crucible 22 thereon and surrounding perforations 20.
By this arrangement it will be observed that upon release of handle 9 and consequently of piston 4 the operative stroke of said piston will tend to cause a vacuum in the upper portion of cylinder 1 and thus tend to draw air into-said cylinder through flask 22, character, 7 I
A suitable burner 23 of any usual or desired construction is supported in operative relation with flask or crucible 22 by means of a vertical rod 24 which is adjustably secured by means of a clamp 25 to a horizontal rod 26 which in turn is removably adjustably secured to nipple 13 by means of a clamp 27. As shown, the cylinder 1 is rigidly niountledin position by means of a bracket 28 which maybe secured to a side wall or other suitable support. 7
In use handle 9 is first set in the proper notch 3 which willdep'end upon the size and consistency of the mold employed and other conditions well known to those as is usual in machines. of this familiarwith the use of such apparatus.
Then, the usual flask or mold is placed in position on support 14 and the metal designed for the filling melted in the usual manner by means of burner 23, When the metal has been properly me1ted, handle 9 is released by touching it with the hand or knee, orotherwise, whereupon piston i will instantly make its operative stroke. This tends to create a vacuum in the upper portion of cylinder 1 and the molten metal will be drawn into the mold in the usual manner.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect thisis capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but
desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of p the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 7 Patent is z l.v Ina casting apparatus the combination of a cylinder having a longitudinal slot in one side, said slot being provided with a plurality of locking notches; a reciprocatory piston in said cylinder; a spring connected with said piston and adapted toqcause an operative stroke thereof to tend to produce a vacuum in one end of said cylinder and a handle connected with said piston and projecting through said slot, said handle being adapted to engage said notches to lock said piston in difierent positions and thus for different lengths of operative strokes, substantially as described.
2.- In a casting apparatus the combination ofa cylinder having a longitudinal slot in one side, said slot being provided with a plurality of locking notches; a reciprocatory and rotatable piston said cylinder; a
spring-connectedwith said piston and adapted tocause an operative stroke thereof to tend to produce a vacuum in one end of said cylinder; and a handle connected with said piston and projecting through said slot, said handle being adapted to engage said notches to lock said piston in different positions and thus for different lengths of operative strokes, substantially as described.

5. A pump comprising a cylinder having a longitudinal slot in one side, said slot being provided with a plurality of-locking notches; a reciprocatory and rotatable piston in said cylinder; a spring connected with said piston and adapted to cause an oper ative stroke thereof to tend to produce a vacuum in one end of said cylinder; and a handle connected with said piston and projecting through said slot, said handle being adapted. to engage said notches to lock said piston indifferent positions and thus for diiferent lengths of operative strokes, substantially as described.
6. A pump comprising a cylinder having a longitudinal slot in one side, said slot being provided with a plurality'of locking notches; a reciprocatory and rotatable pis ton in said cylinder; a tubular piston rod connected with said piston; a spring; ar-
