To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. Fun'rn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Tie-Handle, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a handle, adapted to receive a strip of flexible material, such as a wire, to facilitate the tightening of the strip about a bale or like object.
One object of the'present invention is to provide means whereby theinsertion of the strip into the handle is facilitated.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for mounting the gripping members and for holding the same in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means whereby the strip-guiding tube is directed to place and is held in place.
The invention aims to provide a device tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes-in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope ofwhat is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Applied to the recessed end of the handle 2 is a support 5 which may be in the form of a disk provided with a reduced neck 6 which registers in the recess 4. The support 5 is provided with an opening 5 concentric with the bore 3 of the handle 2. Projecting from the support .5 upon either side of the opening 5 are ears 7 The handle 2 is equipped, relatively near to its recessed, wider end, with a transverse opening 8 which extends entirely through the handle. Mounted in the opening 8 is an anchor 9 which may be a bar or block of metal, equal in length with the diameter of the handle 2 at the opening 8. Securing elements, which may be screws 10, pass through the support 5 and enter the handle 2. The screws 10 extend across the opening 8 and pass through the anchor 9. Thus, the anchor 9 is prevented from moving longitudinally in the opening 8, and an aperture 11 which is formed in the anchor 9 is held in coaxial relation with respect to the bore 3.
The invention further includes a metal tube 12 which is mounted in the bore 3 of the handle 2. The tube 12 at one end is threaded or otherwise secured in the opening 5 in the support 5. The tube 12 passes through the opening 11 in the anchor 9 and thus the anchor constitutes a means for guiding the tube 12 into engagement with the opening 5 in the support 5. That end of the tube 12 which is engaged with the support 5 is flared in its bore, as shown at 14, so as to permit the wire to coiiperate properly with the tube. The opposite end of the tube 12 protrudes beyond the end of the handle 2, as shown at 15.
Mounted upon the last specified end of the handle 2 and held in place by one or more tacks 18 or the like is a ferrule 16. The inner end of the ferrule 16 abuts against a shoulder 17 which may be formed in the handle 2. In the outer end wall of the ferrule l6'there is an opening 19, the outer extremity of which is outwardly flared as indicated at 20, to facilitate the outward passage of the wire, the inner end of the opening 19 being inwardly flared, or otherwise enlarged in diameter as shown at 21. The enlarged portion 21 of the opening 19 receives the protruding end 15 of the tube 12, and thus when the wire passes out of the end of cause the ferrule 16 to-abut against the 1 toothed cam levers 23-provided in their inthe tube 12, the wire Will be directed into the opening 19. Further, the enlarged portion 21 of the opening 19 which receives the protruding end'15 of the tube 12, permits a longitudinal adjustment of both the tube 12 and the ferrule 16 with respect to the handle 2; Thus, the ferrule 16 may bemounted readily on the handle 2 without ad ustmg to a nicety, the length. of the protruding end 15 of the tube 12. Conversely, variations in the location of the shoulder17 will not protruding end 15 of the tube '12 and prevent the inner end of the ferrule 16 from com ng into abutment with the shoulder.
Extended through the ears 7 upon. the sup} 5 port 5 are pins 22. The gripping means in the present instance comprises a pan of neredges with open notches 24 which receive the pins 22, to provide for a swinging I movement for the cam levers.
, A housing 25- is provided, th'esame comprising a cap 26 which fits around theedge of the support 5, and a-collar'27 which surrounds the cap, the cap being peripherally recessed to receive the collar. The collar 27 is equipped in its edge with notches 28 reg- "istering with notches 29 in the edge of the 30 cap 26. The ends of the cam levers 23 pass outwardly through the registering notches 28 and 29. The housing 25, comprising the cap 26 and the collar 27 is held in place by securing elements, which may be screws 30 entering the edge of the support 5. If desired, the screws 30 may be long enough to bear upon the screws 10, the screws 30 thus constituting means for holding the screws 10 in place.
v The invention further includes a plunger 32 which may comprise a disklocated within thefc ap 26, the plunger including a neck 33 which is slidably'received in an opening in the end wall of the cap'26. A compression spring 35 bears againstthe inner face of the end wall of the cap 26 and against'the disk portion of the plunger 32. The outer portion of the bore of the neck 33 may be flared, 5 as indicated at 34, to facilitate the insertion' of the wire 36.

One object of the invention is to facilitate the changing of the cam levers.
It is to be noted that the cam supporting pins 22 lierelatively'close to thefreeiend of the collar 27 and as a consequence, the pins cannot be removed inpractice, without removing the collar. In the present instance, the cap 26, only, is removed, and thereupon,
the pressure of the plunger 32 upon the cam p 23 are subjected to considerable wear, and must berenewed atinlevers23 is relieved, it being possible to lift 5 the cam leve'rs'free from the pins 22 without removing the collar27. i
'Referring to Fig. 4' itlw'ill be observed that w 7 the pins 22 are'locatedin'theears 7 of the support5. The cap 26 liesin-the path of longitudinal movement of the pins22, and
before the pins 22 can move endwise out of the ears 7 ,the pins will strike the cap 26. The cap 26, therefore, constitutes means for retaining the pins'in the support.
Having thus describ d-themvention, what is claimed is:-- 1. In a device of the class described, a body, having a bore and comprising as con stituent parts, a support and a cam, one of which constituent parts is provided with a notch in its edge, the other of which constituent parts is provided with a projection registering in the notch; and a single yieldable means engaging the cam to actuate the cam with respect to the bore and to hold the projection and the notch interen aged.
4:. In a device of the class described, a body provided with a bore and including a support; a cam cooperating with the bore;
and a cap assembled with the body and inclosing the support; the cam and the sup- 15 port having interengaged elements permitting a disengaging of the cam from the support when the cam and the cap are moved in a common direction.
