WILLIAM McCLURE, OF BOUGHTON, ARKANSAS.
RAILWAY LEVEL-BOARD.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June l, 1915.
Application filed June 18, 1912. Serial No. 704,402.
- Level-Boards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to new and useful improvements in railroad level boards.
The main object thereof is to produce a device of the above nature that will aid especially in working curves.
A further object of my invention is to produce a device -to gage, level and ascertain the center of a track, simultaneously and also take points ahead for setting stakes around curves, or along straight, tracks or on bridges.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device that will save time,'trouble and eliminate mistakes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as are described in this specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference being had to the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevational view of my invention in operation, Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the invention looking from left to right in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the invention, Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the device looking at Fig. 1 from right to left, Fig. 6 is a vertical central transverse sectional view of the same as seen on line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. is a vertical transverse sectional View of the device taken through the right-hand peg of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a slide provided at the center of the v level board.
In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The level board consists primarily of a board approximately 5 ft. 2 in. long, 1?; in. thick and 8 in. wide, which will conveniently stretch across a regularly gaged track as shown in Fig. 1. The left hand end of the board 1 is provided with a gage block 2 secured to the under corner thereof. The
, level board is formed in the shape of a right angle in cross section. In the opposite end, or right hand end, of the board 1 is an elevated peg 3, which peg extends entirely through that end of the board and may be secured in any one of its several vertical positions by-inserting a pin 4 into one of the perforations 5 of said peg and the perforations 6 in the wall of the board .1 and the metal plate 7.
In the center of the level board is provided a small slide 8 which is adapted to slide vertically and to be held in any one of its vertical positions by means of pin 9 received by one of the perforations 10 in said slide and the guide 11, which guide is secured to the adjacent vertical face of the board 1. A small magnifying glass 12 for added convenience of the device is provided in the slidenear the upper end thereof for the purpose of observing small and distant objects. Provided in the top of the slide is a level glass 13. The slide is partly cut away below a point 14: thereof, forming a shoulder 15, which shoulder halts the downward movement of the slide when it contacts the guide 11.
Provided in the under face and exactly in the center of the board 1 is a plumb bob 16 by means of which the exact center of the track may be obtained, said plumb-bob having its Weight-suspending flexible connection secured in any suitable manner within a pocket 19 in the underside of the member 1, said pocket being designed to receive said suspending connection and weightwhen the plumb-bob is not being used for the convenient stowing thereof out of the way. Said pocket is guarded or closed by means of a closure or disk 20, suitably pivoted to the member 1 to move or swing laterally for closing or opening said pocket as may be. required. The level of the board is obtained by the level 13 in said slide or the level .17 provided in the upper face of the level board 1.
A hand hold 18 is provided, said hand hold being secured to the upper face of the board at the center thereof, for the purpose of conveniently conveying the level board from place to place.
Although I have specifically described the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, yet I do not confine myself to such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts but reserve and may exercise the right to make such changes therein as do not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new, is:
A device of the type described, including a track-gaging'member having a keeper-like guide arranged centrally thereof, a slide, having, at its upper end, a shoulder and equipped with means for ascertaining the center of the railway track, the shoulder of said slide being adapted to engage said guide, said slide also being provided witha vertical arrangement of adjusting perforations, said guide having a central perforation and an adjusting pinflenga'ging said gui e-perforation and any one of the verticitld arrangements of perforations of said s 1 e. 4
'In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILL. MOCLURE.
