Be it known that I, JOHN G. HoDGsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Continuous Can-Spraying Machines, of which the following is a speciication. X
This invention relates to improvements in continuous can spraying machines.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine adapted for spraying a coating of lacquer or other material on the Walls of can bodies and other articles in which the spray or jet is directed or projected against the article being coated at a constantly varying angle or inclination during the spraying period.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spraying machine in which the spray or jet of the coating material is projected or directed against the article being coated at a constantly changing angle or inclination and while the article is being bodily moved and axially rotated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spraying machine of large capacity, high speed, continuous in operation and in which the spraying is automatically controlled.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations ofthe parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a part vertical section, part side elevation of one form of machine embodying my improvements and` Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 1, certain of the duplicate parts of the article carrier and spraying device carrier being omitted, said ligure showing also diagrammatically a second spraying device carrier and a second article carrier, to illustrate the method of multiplying the parts to increase and multiply the capacity of the machine. f
In said drawing, as shown in Fig. l, two 11p-rights or standards 10 and 11 are provided for supporting, respectively, the article carrier and operating mechanism and the spraying device carrier and coperating parts. Continuously rotatably mounted in the standard 10 is a vertical shaft 12 having secured thereto, at its top, a carrier 13 having a depending inclined peripheral flange 14 to which is secured, at equal distances apart, a plurality of chuck-holding brackets 15, each bracket 15 having rotatably mounted therein a magnetized articleholding chuck 16, having a spindle 17 to the lower end of which is secured a bevel pinion 18, all of said pinions 18 meshing with and being rotated by a major bevel gear 19, the latter being secured to a hub 20, loosely rotatably mounted on the shaft 12, said hub 20 having a bevel gear 21 fixed thereto and driven by a coperating bevel gear 22 fixed to the inner end of a horizontal shaft 23, the latter being-driven by means of pulley 24, belt 25 and pulley 26, said pulley 26 being fixed to a power shaft 27, driven from any suitable source of power (not shown) through a pulley 28. Secured to the inner end of the shaft 27 is a bevel gear 29 meshing with a bevel gear 30 xed to the lower end of the shaft 12 and adapted to rotate the latter continuouslyand in the opposite direction to that in which the gear 19 is rotated.
The spraying device carrier, designated generally by the reference A, includes a vertical shaft 31 rotatably mounted in the standard 11 and continuously driven from the gear 30 by means of a bevel gear 32, shaft 33, and bevel gears 34 and 35. Fixed to the upper part of the shaft 31 is a spider or carrier 3G, each arm of said spider being provided with a spraying device constructed and operated as follows: Each spraying device comprises a. bracket 37 adjustably pivotally mounted on one arm of the spider 36, said bracket 37 having adjustably mounted therein a lacquer or other coating material feed tube 38, the upper end of said feed tube being disposed adjacent to the lower end of a compressed air tube 39 mounted in a bracket 40 adjustably pivotally connected to the spider, the upper inner end of the pipe 39 being connected by a short section of flexible hose 40al with a pipe 41, all of said pipes 41 communicating with a compressed air chamber 42, formed in a box 43 secured to the top of the shaft 31, said air chamber 42 being supplied With compressed air from any suitable outside source through a supply pipe 44. In each pipe 41 is a valve 45 operated by means of a lever 46, the latter having connected thereto at its inner end one end of a retracting spring 47, the other end of which is secured to the spider, the movement of the lever 46 under the actlon of the spring 47 being limited by a stop 146 fixed to the lever 46. Each lever 46 at its outer end is provided with a ball or knob 48 which engages under a stationary cam 49 fixed to supporting brackets 50, the latter 1n turn being secured to the under slde of an angular, open top lacquer trough or tank 51. The tank 51 is supported by a sleeve 52, vertically adjustably mounted on the standard 1l by means of a set screw 58 threaded into the upper end of the standard 11 and passing through a slot 54 in the lower portion of the sleeve 52. The lacquer or other coating material is supplied to the trough or tank 51 througha feed pipe 55, any surplus being drained off through the overflow pipe 56.
The cans or other articles to be coa-ted are placed by hand in the chucks 16, which are suitably 'recessed to receive and center the articles, and as the article carrier is rotated in the direction' indicated by the arrow a 1n Fig. 2 and the spraying device carrler rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow ZJ,V the chucks and spraying devices will be brought opposite each other on account of the tangential arrangement of the carrlers sothat the sprayor jet will be first projected or directed against the walls `of the article being'coated at the angle shown by the dotted positions of the spray as shown at c in Fig. 2 and as the movement of both carriers is continued, the angle or inclination at which the spray or jet is projected against the article will be constantly chang ing until the spray is finally cut ofi at the position indicated by the dotted lines at d in Fig. 2, it being understood that the cam 49 will be arranged to operate the valve-controlling levers 48 at the proper time and for the proper period. After the articles have been coated, the same are ejected from the chucks by means of. the ejector rods 57, which are operatedby a stationary cam 58. It will also be noted that the lacquer feed tubes 38 of the spraying devices dip into the lacquer contained in the tank 51, and as the spraying device carrier isl rotated, these tubes will constantly stir up and agitate the coating material and prevent any sediment from forming.
Referring to Fig. 2, it Iwill be seen that an additional spraying device carrier A1 can be employed with the carrier 13 to increase the output, the carrier A1 coperating with the chuck carrier in the same manner as does the carrier A. The spraying devices carried by the carriei A1- may be utilized to either apply a second coating to the articles first coated by lthe spraying devices on carrier A, or other articles may be placed on the chucks after those sprayed by the spraying device on carrier A have been ejected and before the chucks approach'the spraying devices of carrier A1. As a further method of increasing the Ioutput of the machine, an additional carrier having a plurality of chucks thereon may be used to cooperate with the spraying devices of carrier A as shown conventionallyV by the dotted lines at B. .y
Although I have herein shown and described what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my invention, yet it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the' spirit of the invention, and all such changes and modifications are contemplated as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. A spraying machine of the character described including, in combination: a continuously rotatable carrier having an article holding chuck thereon; and a separate, continuously rotatable carrier located adjacent lsaid first named carrier and having a spraying device thereon, said carriers being rotatable about parallel axes, the said machine comprising means for changing the angle of the axis of the can to the axis of the spraying device so as to coat all parts of the interior of the can, substantially as specified.
2.-A spraying machine of the character described including, in combination: two carriers rotatable about parallel axes, one of said carriers being provided with an article holding chuck rotatably mounted thereon and the other of said carriers having a spraying device mounted thereon; mechal nism for rotating said chuck; and means, automatically operable, for controlling said spraying devices, the said machine comprising means for changing the angle of the axis of the can to the axis of the spraying device soas to coat all parts of the interior of the can, substantially as specified.
8. A spraying machine of the character described including, in combination: two carriers each continuously rotatable about a vertical aX'is, one of said carriers having a chuck rotatably mounted thereon and the other of said carriers having a spraying device mounted thereon; mechanism for continuously rotating said chuck; and automatically operable means for controlling said .spraying devices, the said machine comprising means for changing the angle of the axis having a plurality of spraying devices thereon; and automatically operable means for controlling said spraying devices, the said machine comprising means for changing the angle ,of the axis of the can to the ams of the spraying device so as to coat all arts of the interior of the can, substantlally as specified.
5. In a can spraying mechanism, in com.
bination: a rotatable can carrier having an article holding chuck thereon; and a separate rotatable carrier located adjacent to the said can carrier, and having a spraying device thereon; the said carriers being relatively arranged to change the angle of the axis of the can to the axis of the spraying device during the spraying operation so as to coat all parts of the interior of the can; substantially as speciied.
6. In a can spraying mechanism, in combination: a rotatable can carrier having an article holding chuck thereon; and a separate rotatable carrier located adjacent to the said can carrier, and having a spraying device thereon; the said carriers being relatively arranged to change the angle of the axis of the can to the axis of the spraying device during the spraying operation so as to coat all parts ofthe interior of the can; and means for automatically operating the spraying device while the can is 1n roximity to the same; substantially as speciEied A spraying machine of the character described including, in combination: a carrier rotatable about a vertical axis having a plurality of article holding chucks rotatably mounted thereon; a second carrier having a plurality of spraying devices mounted thereon, said second carrier being also rotatable about a vertical axis; and means for operating each of said spraying devices during the approach to its position nearest a chuck on the first named carrier and while passing the litt latter, the said machine comprising means for changing the angle of the axisof the can to the axis of the spraying device so as to coat all parts of the interior of the can, substantially as specified.
8. A spraying machine of the character described including, in combination: a continuously rotatable carrier having a plurality of article holding chucks continuously rotatably mounted thereon and bodily movable therewith; a continuously rotatable carrier having a plurality of sprayingdevices thereon, said carriers being arranged substantially tangentially to each other; and means for operating each of the spraying devices during its approach to its position nearest a chuck and While passing the latter, the said machine comprising means for changing the angle of the axis of the can to the axis of the spraying device so as to coat all parts of the interior of the can, substantially as specified.
A spraying machine of the character described including, in combination: two carriers each continuously rotatable about a vertical axis and arranged substantially tangential to each other, one of said carriers having a plurality of continuously rotatable chucks mounted thereon and the other of said carriers having a plurality of independently operable spraying devices; and means for operating each of the spraying devices during its approach to its position nearest a chuck and while passing the latter, the said machine comprising means for changing the angle of the axis of the can to the axis of the spraying device so as to coat all parts of the interior of the can, substantially as specified.
