To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that LJAMES L. GLAwsoN,'a citizen of the United States, residing at Americus, in the county of Sumter, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Harrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to harrows, particularly to that type in which means are provided for withdrawing the teeth and protruding skids for convenience in transportation and has for its object the provision of a novel construction of harrow frame whereby a plurality of harrows may be placed side by side and secured to each other for forming a gang.
A further object is to provide an extremely simple harrow that will be formed of a few strong and durable parts that will not easily get out of order.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention: Figure 1 is a plan' view of the harrow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 4 is across sectional view on the line H Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing the means of securing the teeth. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 66 Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate simi lar parts, the harrow is shown to be triangular in form and comprises angleiron side rails 10 that are preferably formed from a single length of angleiron material bent V-shaped, there being a cross'brace 11 formed of strap material disposed across and connecting the rear ends of the side rails. The vertical webs of the side rails are extended rearwardly and serve as a means for connecting the ends of the cross brace and also as a means for attaching lateral wings 12. The harrow toothbeams 13 are each formed ofchannel iron with the open side dlrected rearwardly, there being gudgeons 14 formed on the ends of the channel iron and ournaled in corresponding openings in the vertical webs of the harrow side rails. The harrow teeth 15 are secured in place by l-bolts 16 which encircle the teeth and pass in the open side of the channel iron and through suitable openings in the channel iron web, as best shown in Fig. 5.
On the leading harrow tooth beam web there is disposed a forwardly projecting spring arm 17, and also on the rearmost harrow tooth beam web there are disposed similar forwardly projecting springs arms 18, such arms forming skids when the harrow tooth beams are rotated to withdraw the harrow teeth, such skids facilitating the transportation of the harrow without the necessity of loading the same upon a wagon. Each skid is curved downwardly as shown at 19 so as to ride easily upon the ground, and is secured at the rear end by a bolt 20, but not necessarily so.
For rotating the harrow tooth beams to withdraw the teeth and protrude the skids, the beams are provided with corresponding upstanding bracket arms 21 which are all connected together by a shift link 22 that is pivotally connected to the brackets by pivot pins 23. There is a stationary bar 24 arranged above the shift bar, and connected at the forward end as shown at 25 to the point of the harrow frame, and connected at the rear end as shown at 26 to the center of the cross brace 11. A shift lever 27 is fulcrumed near the rear end of the stationary bar and is pivotally connected by a pivot pin 28 to the rear end of the shift link. Upon shoving the lever forwardly to its limit of movement the tooth bars will be rotated to extend the teeth downwardly to operative position, and upon the lever being pulled rearwardly to its limit of movement thetooth bars will be rotated to withdraw the teeth and extend the skids downward to operative position.
For locking the shift lever in adjusted positions, an arched strap bracket 29 is secured to the stationary bar and is provided in the top with a series of openings 30 adapted to selectively receive a spring pressed pawl 31 that is slidably fitted in guides 32 on the lever and is equipped with a handle 33 for withdrawing the pawl. A roller 36L is fitted in the lower end of the pawl rides upon the top of the strap bracket during shifting of the lever. Itwill be noted that by virtue of the pawl projecting e11: tirely through the openings in the brackets, slipping of the lever from operative position is positively prevented. i
