I T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAIVL B. THAYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of J ackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor- Polishers; and I do declare the following to be a, full, clear, and exact description of the invention, su'ch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying. drawings, and to the letters andfigures of reference markedtherewhich form a part of this specification. The pins may be projected through apertures in the knob flange and then welded or otherwise permanently secured to the flange, and the parts of the pins that project into the shaft grooves are preferably provided with anti-friction rollers 46 to obviate friction on the shaft when it is raised while revolving.
In order to hold the polishing head off of the floor while the machine is being moved, I pivota post 47 on the upper bracket collar 8 so that it may lie fiat on the collar to allow the shaft to descend to operative position, or may be raised to engage the under side of the knob when the shaft is elevated and support the knob and shaft, so that the polisher head is held above the floor.
In using the machine, presuming the parts to be constructed and assembled as described, and presuming its use on amarble orlike floor,
a source of supply, usually a lighting fixture, so that when by manipulation of the switch in the handle of the machine, the polisher is revolved through the When the polisher is revolved, the stones carried thereby are revolved rapidly over the surface of the floor, and the latter polished or ground down toan even surface, the weight of-the cast metal head, supplemented by thatof the vertical shaft and the weight of the stones themselves, providing 'suflicient pressure to carry on the grinding process. When it is necessary to move the machine to a difierent point, or should a high point in the floor be encountered, the operator lifts the knob 41 to move the shaft 9 vertically in its bearings and through the bevel gear wheel 11, thereby raising the polisher head from thefloor. The machine may then be moved to the proper position and the polisher lowered perpendicularly to again contact the surace.
By having the front of the carrier body concaved, as illustrated, the polisher may be set in close to the body and thereby not only economize space, but facilitate the control of the polisher, and by mounting the handle on the carrier body by the pin and slot connection the handle is'made adjustable, so that control of the machine is facilitated; it being apparent that by properly locating the handle the body may be pivoted on the rear or forward carrying wheels, to lesson or increase pressure on the polisher head.

In a floor polishing machine, a supporting member comprising body and ground wheels, a body, means for actuating the polisher, and arhandle having yoke arms at its lower end overlying the side edges of the body member and provided with slots, and pins on said body member projected through said slots and anchoring the yoke arms to the body member.

In a floor polishing machine comprising a portable supporting member, having a socketed forward end, a bracket fixed to said supporting member within said socketed end, bearing members on said 'bracket,'a shaft revolubly mounted in saidbearing member, a. polishing head fixed on said shaft, a bevel gear feathered on said shaft and adapted for support on said bearing member, a second shaft revolubly mounted in said bracket at right angles to said first shaft, a bevel gear fixed to said second shaft and meshing with the bevel gear on said first shaft, a motor directly connected to said second, shaft, a knob having pin and slot connection with the upper end of said first shaft for raising said polishing head through said socket, a latch pivotally mounted on said bearing member and adapted for projection beneath said knob to hold said polishing head in elevated position, a tubular handle adjustably mounted on said supporting member, a hand grip on said handle, circuit wires in said tubular handle, and a switch in said hand grip for controlling current in said circuit wires.
