Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER A. SHEAR- wooo, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Webster Groves, in the county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oilers for Elevator Guide- Itods, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for automatically oiling or greasing the rods disposed at either side of the modern elevator to guide its movement, and has for its prime object the provision of a simple, compact and inexpensive device of the character described which is adapted to dispose the lubricant continuously and evenly upon all of the surfaces of the guide-rods which are exposed to frictional contact with the elevator frame.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views, Figure l is a side elevation of the complete device as the same appears in position upon the top of an elevator; Fig. 2, a top plan view; Fig. 3, an end elevation taken along line 83 of Fig. 2; Fig. 1, a sectional elevation taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a sectional plan view taken along line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6, a sectional elevation of a modified form of the device; and Fig. 7, a detail sectional view of one of the oiling rollers and its supporting member.
In carrying my invention into practice, I provide a cylindrical grease reservoir 1 threaded as at 2 for the retention of a cap 3 having a threaded collar 4 through which is projected a threaded rod 5. One extremity of said rod carries a wing-nut 6 fixed by a pin 6 while its opposite extremity (not threaded) projects through a plunger 7 and is secured with a nut 8, it being clear that the rotation of rod 5 to right or left will serve to advance or retract said plunger.
At the termination of the threads of rod 5 a small metal disk 9 is disposed to serve as a bearing surface for a volute helix spring 10 whose base rests upon said plunger and which serves to automatically advance the latter against the body of grease to feed the same constantly toward the front of reservoir 1. In the front wall of said reservoir ports 11, 12 and 13 are arranged, ports 11 and 13 communicating with channels 14 provided in members 15 and port 12 communicating directly with the interior of housing 16 in which a roller 17 is mounted.
Near the outer extremity of members 15 an aperture 18 is drilled which communicates with channel 1 1 and revolubly mounted upon said members above the location of said aperture are sleeves 19 formed integral with arms 20 which support housings 21 carrying rollers 22, arms 20 being channeled as at 23 to permit the passage of the lubricant to the interior of said housings.
In order to prevent leakage washers 24 are disposed on either side of sleeve 19 and the latter is retained against shoulder 25 by aid of threaded cap 26.
Rollers 22 are maintained in contact with the sides of guide-rod 27 by means of springs 28 which exert pressure against arms 20, while roller 17 serves to spread the lubricant upon the edge and is retained in contact therewith through the mechanism now to be described.
Depending from the under surface of reservoir 1 are several apertured lugs 29 through which a rod 30 is projected, the latter being surrounded by helical springs 31 and extending from end to end of a supporting member 82 whose upper surface (indicated by line 33, Fig. 3) is so formed as to afford a guideway for reservoir 1. The base plate of member 32 is provided with a number of threaded apertures 34: for the passage of screws which serve to secure said member to a block 35 or other suitable element fixed in position upon the top of the elevator.
From the foregoing it will be appreciated that means are provided whereby, upon proper adjustment of the appliance, roller 17 may be retained in contact with the guide-rod throughout its entire length and that said means also permits of the free inward movement of the rollers and reservoir in response to the swaying or lateral movement of the elevator carriage, springs 31 serving to promptly advance the oiling devices on one side of the elevator when those on the opposite side are forced inwardly.
The modification shown in Fig. 6 consists in the substitution of curved members 15 for the straight members 15 shown in the remaining views and changing the location. of ports 11 and 13, arms thus formed serving to adapt the device for use upon that type of elevator whose equipment comof said rod- I ro prises wooded guide-rods of considerable width as indicated at 27*. Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by LettersPatent is I 1'. A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, ports therein, members projecting therefrom, movable arms disposed upon said members, housings carried by said arms, rollers mounted in said housings, channels in said arms and members communicating with said ports, and means for forcing a lubricant from said receptacle through said ports and channels.
2. A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, ports therein, members projecting therefrom, movable arms disposed upon said members, housings'carried by said arms, rollers mounted in said housings, channels in said arms and members communicating with said ports, and automatic means for forcing a lubricant from said receptacle through said portsand channels.
3. A device of the character described. comprising a'receptacle, ports therein, members projecting therefrom, movable arms disposed upon said members, housings carried by said arms, rollers mounted in said housings, channels in said arms and members communicating with said ports, means for retaining said arms in yielding contact with the guide-rods of an elevator, and means for forcing a lubricant from said receptacle through said ports and channels.
4-, A device of the character described comprising a receptacle, ports therein, a roller mounted adjacent to an extremity thereof, members projecting from said receptacle on either side of said roller, movable arms disposed upon said members, housings carried by said arms, rollers mounted in said housings, channels in said arms and members communicating with certain of said ports, and means for forcing a lubricant from said receptacle through said ports and channels.
5. A device of the character described comprising a support, a receptacle slidably connected therewith, springs adapted to yieldingly resist the movement of said receptacle relative to said support, ports in said receptacle, members projecting therefrom, movable arms disposed upon said members, housings carried by said arms, rollers mounted in said housings, channels in said arms and members communicating with said ports, and means for forcing a lubricant from said receptacle through said ports and channels.
