T0 all whom 'it may concern I Be it known that l, Enorm E. lVHrrrnN- BURG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Journal-Box for Trucks; and I do hereby declare that the' following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the ac- 10 colnpanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parte.
The object of this invention is to iinprove the construction of brick cars and the like.
The invention has been made particularly in connection with cars for brick drying purposes, but it is not limited to such use. The tracks on which such cars operate are usually in imperfect alinement and, there- 20 fore, there is asl/ight variation in the elevation of the track rails.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a very simple and effective construction which will enable the car to operate satisfao torily on 'an uneven tracl.; and also to make such construction capable ofsupporting a very heavy 'load as is required in handling of clay/products.
The chief feature of the invention consists in securing to the frame of the cr a downwardly extending housing having a convex' upper surface and mounting on the ends ofy the axles journal boxes adapted to loosely fit in said housing and having-i; con

themselves to vertical irregularities in. the track. The full'natu're of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:

The frame l() is rigid and to its sides the housings l1 are secured. These housings receive the journal boxes 12 mounted by roller bearings on the :nds of the axles 13 66 carried by the Wheels i4. Each journal boxv 12 has fiat vertical sides und a transversely curved lower surface and an upper bearing surface 1.12 which. is convex both transversely and longitudinally of the axle. The transverse curvature is shown in Fig. 2, and the .longitudinal curvature is shown in Fig. fand said longitudinal curvature extends throughout the upper and outer peripheral surfaces of said journal boxes so that said surfaces are substantially concentric yvith the center of the portion of the axle mounted on the journal box. The inner 'or bearing surface of the housing 11 has vertical sides, as shown in. Fig. 2, and an upper and inner bearing surface concave and curved to receive snugly the journal box.
The foregoing construction is such that the journal box can have /but slie'ht transverse oscillatory movement, and may have vertical pey, although thatis limited heceuse the weight of the car snd'load will hold the bracket snugly down upon the jour-` nal box. The journal looX however can oscillate in :i plane parallel with the axle to a. suiicient extent to enable it to accommodate its structure to the vertical irregularities'in the track on which the'cer operates. And to the. foregoing result there is added an extremely large bearing surface betiveen'the 90 housing and the journal box so that the journal boilivvill support any load which the car can support and, regardless of the vertical .irregularities ot' the track. There is an opening 2Min the bottom lof each journal 95 box to let the dirt escupe andthe" lovver` part of each housing is cut away at 2l to let the cli'rt'escape. Also end opening 22 in the housing and 23 in the journal box are provided `so as 'to register with each other 100 and (permit the dirt to escape and an overhanging iange 25 protects the opening 22.
Une result of the foregoing structure is that the curvature of the upper parte of the housing and journal box sheds ehrt and dust and prevents the same from enterin -the roller bearings -in the journal box an ren` ders it unnecessary to have shields.

In a car, the combination with a main frame, an axle, and car wheels carried by the axle, of a housing secured to said frame which has vertical sides with an upper and inner bearing surface curved longitudinally of the axle, and a journal box upon the axle and fitting in said housing and having vertical sides and an upper and convex vbearing lsurface curved so as to conform with the bearing surface of the housing, the curvature of said bearing surfaces being substantially concentric with the portion of the axle in the journal box.

In a car, the combination with a main frame, an axle, and car Wheels carried by the axle, of a housing secured to said frame which has vertical sides with an upper and inner bearing surface 'curved longitudinally of the axle, and a journal box upon the axle and fitting insaid housing and having vertical sides and an upper convex bearing surface curved so as to conform with the bearing surface of the housing, the lower part of the journal box being partially cut' away to 4permit the escape of dirt.
6. In a car, the combination with a main which has vertical sides with an upper .and
inner bearing surface curved longitudinally 4of the axle, and a journal box upon the axle and fitting in said housing and having vertical sides and an upper convex bearing sur-` face curved 'so as to conform with the bearing surface of the housing, the inner and lower sides of said housing being obliquely cut away to,a point under the outer portion of the journal box.
7 .v In a car, the combination with a mainframe, an axle, and car wheels carried by the axle, of a' housing secured to said frame which has vertical sides with an upper and inner bearing surface curved longitudinally of the axle, and a journal box upon the axle and fitting in said housing and having vertical sides and l.auf upper convex bearing surface curved soas to conform with the bearing surface ofthe housing, the bottom p0rtions of the housing and journal box being artially cut away to permit the escape of 8, In a car, the combination with a main frame, an axle, and car wheels carried by the axle, of a housing secured to said frame which has vertical sides with an upper and' inner bearing surface curved longitudinally of the axle, a journal box upon the axle and fitting' in said housing and having vertical sides and lan upper convex bearing surface curved so as to conform with the bearing surface of the housing, and registerin openings in the ends of said journal box an bearing bracket.

In a truck, the combination with a main frame, an axle, and car wheels carried by the axle, of a housing secured to said frame which has vertical sides with an upper and inner bearing surface curved, longitudinally of the axle, and a journal box upon the axle and fitting in said housing and having vertical sides and an upper convex bearing surface curved so as to conform with the bearing surface of the housing, the upper inner edges of the housing and journal box being normally flush with each other.
