Be it known that we, Evan R. Lnwis and LoUis SALZINGER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at W'illres- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Chimney-Motors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chimney motors and an object of the invention is to concentrate the draft and to deflect the concentrated draft against a fan in such a way as to derive maximum power from the draft.
A further object of the invention is to provide a unit which may be applied to any chimney or draft creating means.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a support for a fan which carries means for directing the draft substantially at right angles to the plane of rotation of the fan.
llith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the arrangement, combination and construction o-f parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings forming partof this invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section showing our invention as applied to the chimney; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical `section through the fan and draft directing devices as is shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device for concentrating the draft; Fig. 4 shows a fragmentary view of a modified form of device for concentrating the draft.
The general aim of the present invention is to provide a substantially cylindrical housing closed on one end with a head or plate which is provided with either a plurality of funnels or cup-shaped depressions which communicate with tubes substantially parallel with the axis of a fan mounted directly behind the plate or head, a. suitable pulley or other similar device being provided for driving machinery when the fan rotates.
Referring to the drawings, 1 shows an ordinary draft creating device as used with the usual power plants, etc. and for the sake of the present invention is shown as provided with a port 2 in communication with a cylindrical housing 3 which may be secured to the port 2 in any suitable manner as by a band 4. cal housing are braces 5 in which is journaled a shaft 6, although one of these braces 5 will suffice as will appear hereinafter. Mounted upon the shaft 6 is a fan 7 of any suitable design having the blades set at any pitch and being of whatever special design may be found most expedient. This fan 7 is rigid with the shaft 6 and when the same rotates causes a pulley8 torotate with the shaft. We have not shown any particular mechanism to be operated by thel fan, but it is to be understood that any machinery light enough to be operated by the fan can 113e connected thereto by means of the pul- As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one end of the cylindrical housing 3 is reduced as at 9 to receive a flange 10 of a plate or head 11, the said plate being held to the cylindrical housing by means of bolts or rivets 12. This head or plate 11 forms an important part of the invention and in the preferred form as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, is provided with a plurality of cup-shaped depressions 13 from which extend tubes 14. While we have shown iive of these cups and tubes in the drawing, yet more or less can be used as is found expedient and we do not wish to be limited to the particular position of the tube with respect to the blades of the fan. The tubes are preferably arranged concentrically with respect to the shaft so as to provide a plurality of jets of air of uniform strength which impinge upon the blades of the fan. Again, it may be stated that this particular arrangement of the tubes 14 need not necessarily be followed to derive the benefits of the present invention. lf desired, the position of the fan 7 with respect to the head 11 may be made adjustable by means of a screw 15, the object of this adjustability being to enable the greatest amount of power to be derived from the fan by changing the position of the fan with respect to the tubes. In order that this adjustability may be effected, the shaft is provided with a key-way 16 which receives a key 17 causing the shaft and fan to rotate in unison.
A modified form of draft concentrator is shown in Fig. 4 where a head 19 is provided with a plurality of perforations 2O through which extend spouts 21 of funnels 22, the bowl of the funnel being spherical. These funnels extend beyond the outer face of the plate 19 and may be used instead of the cupshaped depressions 13. In order that the draft operating the fan may beV controlled, there is a damper in the port 2.
It Will be observed from the drawing that the tubes are substantially parallel to the shaft and that the jets of air issuing from the tubes strike the fan 4blades ina direction substantially perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the fan. It Will further be noted that the air is concentrated at a` few points on they fanl and lby adjusting the position of the fan or by varying the position and -number of the tubes, it will be possible to direct the jets against the fan at the mostfadvantageous points. In order tofinsure smooth running of the fan, and also to prevent the possibility of having the fan stop so that the jets issue between the blades, the number of tubesand the number of blades in the fan will preferably differ in number, in the drawing, the fanis shown as provided With four blades, While five tubes are illustrated. As heretofore intimated, one of the supports 5 may be suflicient, in which case the Aplate 11 Will form the other bearing for the shaft 6, this bearing being desirable in vieWf-of the fact that the strain uponY the'vshaft at the pulley 8 is spaced considerably 'from' the supports 5 and also in view of the fact that it is not desirable to have any morev obstruction placed inthe path of the incomingair than is absolutely necessary. In order to mount the device 'there' have been shoivn kin the drawing supports 18.
What We claim is:
l. A chimneymotor comprising a substantially cylindrical .housing,a fan rotatably mounted therein, a .head'for the cylindrical housing, and a: pluralityof tubes connecting with the outer air and extending toward the fan fina direction substantially parallela to the axis of the housing.
2. A chimney motorcomprising a cylinfan carried by the shaft and adapted to rotate in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of the housing and. tubes communicating with the outer air and extending inwardly towardthe fan in a direction substantially parallel to the shaft.
3. A chimney motor comprising a housing substantially cylindricaland openingfat one end to the chimney,va head coveringv the other end of the cylindrical housing and 4provided on the outerface thereof with cuplike depressions, tubes communicating vWith the cup-like vdepressions and extending in- Wardly fromv the headv substantially parallel to the axis of the housing and a fan rotatably mounted Within the housing in vproximity to said tubes and rotating in a'fplane substantially perpendicular tothe axis of the housing.
