Description

O. ACKERMAN. Improvement in Supports for Camera-Boxes- Patented AprH 25.1871.
Au. H/oro-L/rf/aaMFf//s ca M Massale/vri Moons) .K ,m v 1x1 mw m SWMLN tutti @dat ORIN AOKERMAN, 0F OARTHAG'E, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 114.082, dated April 25, 1871.
'IMPROVEMENT IN SUPPORTS FOR CAMERA-BOXES.
The Schedln referred to in these Letters Patent and making paxt of the same.
To Aall whom Iit may concern Be it known that I, ORIN ACKERMAN, of Carthage, inthe county of Jefferson and Stateof` New York, have invented a new and improved Camera-Box; and I do'ghereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation;
, Figure 2, a transverse section; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one variety ofthe independent box.
My invention relates to an improved mechanism for supporting and adjus'ting'the pitch of camera-boxes, as hereil'iafter described.
The mechanism is shown applied to a box whose construction is set forth, but to which I lay no claim in this application.
Referring to the drawing- A is a camera-box.
B is va four-sided metal flame, placed in guides, C C, that are secured tothe edges of flanges that spring from the sides-.of aY wooden supporting plate, E. The box A rests on the lower rail of the frame B, and a spring, a, secured to the`upper sideof the box, and bearing on the inside of the upper rail of the frame B, holds the .box A in the frame. Inside of the box A, in an oriiice ofthe plate E, is placed an independent box, F, which is divided into compartments, b, through the front side of each of which is made* an orifice, c, through which rays of light from the sitter pass to the'sensitized plate in rear of the independent box and within the box A.
The box F remains stationary, and, after each exposure, the box A may be moved either sidewise or upward or downward,.so as to bring-fresh` portions of the sensitized plate in rear of the box F and enable additional pictures to be taken upon it at the same sitting, till the whole surface of the sensitized is covered. By this method lthere is no limit, except the dimensions of the box A, to the multiplication of the same picture at the same sitting.
For taking larger pictures the box F sllould be replaced witl' cnehaving larger chambers, or having but one chamber.
The box A is moved from side to side in the frame Bby means of a rac-k, d, formed on the lower rail of the latter, and a* pinion, e, engaging with said rack and placed on a shaft, j', that is supported in lugs, g, that extend downward from the box A, the shaft f being furnished with a handle, h, for convenience in turning it.
The box A is moved upward -and downward by moving theframe B itself in the guides C, by means of racks t' formed in the side rails of said frame and pinions j gearing with said racks, and placed on a shaft, k, that is mounted in lugs that spring from the upper side of the plate E, the shaft L being fui'- nished with a handle, le', and there being a pawl, l, hinged to the plate E, that is used for stopping the pinions j at any desired point.
I do not wish to contineE myself to the mechanism here vdescribed for operating what I consider mine broadlyi. e., a movable camera-box.
In iig.2 m is a mirror secured to the back side of the plate E, for the purpose of enabling the operator to watch the image oi' the sitter and govern himself accordingly, without turning his facetoward the sitter and thus distracting his attention and spoiling the pose.
G represents legs, which are jointedat their upper ends t-o the rear side of the plate E, and which are connected by a cross-bar, 91,130 the upperside of which cross-bar is secured a socket, o, in the upper rail of which a set-screw, p, sits. A curved bar, q, extending from the hack side of the plate E, passesl throughthe socket 0and may be clamped therein at any point by the set-screw p.
"By this arrangement I form a support for the camera-box on which it may be swung `almost instanfl taneously in a vertical plane to suit the height or position of the subject, and secured at the desired inl Vcliiiation with equal facility and dispatch. Screws may be put through the bar-mtosecure the box to any suitable standor support.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the plate E the legs G, crossbar n, socket o, bar q, andset-screwp, as. explained. ORIN AGKERMAN. Witnesses:
