IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.

To all to whom these presents may come Be it known that I, CHARLES E. TYLER, of Georgetown, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brogans, or what is termed by the trade as Plow- Shoes; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully desoribedin the following specification and represented in theaccompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 denotes a. side elevation of a brogau constructed in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a representation of the upper of the brogan as developed on a plane surface, or as it appears when out from a skin or piece of leather.

The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar mode of cutting and forming the upper of a brogan, whereby the same may be made of a single piece of leather and with but a single seam extending up the back of the heel; my invention involving not only a novel out, but the crimping of the front or toe portion of the upper in order to give it the proper form and graceful outline required.

Heretofore manufacturers of brogans of this class of heavy work, in order to get rid of the objectionable side seams and obtain the desired form for the instep portion, have been obliged to form the upper in two pieces. This not only produces an .extra seam to abrade the foot of the wearer and injure the appearance of the article, but also increases the cost thereof.

My invention obviates all these defects, and enables the manufacturer to produce an easy-fitting, neat, and substantial substitute.

In carrying out 'my invention 1 cut from a cowhide or other suitable kind of leather, and by means of a die or pattern, the blank or piece to constitute the upper of the brogan.

This blank or piece is of the peculiar shape shown in fig. 2, in which 0. denotes the vamp or front portion and b b the quarters or heel portion.

After the blank has been out or stamped from the hide or piece. of leather, the front or toe end is to be dampened and drawn 'over a block or former of the proper shape and crimped, in order to give the desired curvature to the vamp below the bottom d of the lacing-slit D.

After the blank has become dry or set, it is removed from the former and the part 0, to form the lacing opening, is next out or stamped out to give the proper shape to the instep. Next the blank is folded.

As all the remaining operations of finishing the brogan do not differ from those ordinarily employed,-

no further description of them is deemed necessary.

What I claim is-- l. The improved brogau or heavy high-quartered shoe, having its ripper formed of a single piece of leather, shaped and connected in manner as described, the said upper having the front or toe portion thereof crimped in order to give the desired curve or contour, as set forth.

2. An upper formed ofa single piece of heavy leather, suitable for the manufacture of the class of coarse high-quartered shoes known as broga-ns or plow-shoes, when the front or toe portion of said upper is orimped, as and for the purpose specified.
