To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Josnrn W. FoRBns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the State of Virginia, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Vending Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coin controlled vending-machines, such as are used for vending packages of cigarettes or other small articles, when a coin or several coins equal to the price of the article, or package, is placed in the machine and an actuating plunger is operated.
The object of my invention is to provide a machine of the character described to be used for the purpose of vending cigarettes, and particularly to vend many kinds of cigarettes, are placed upon the market in packages of many different sizes, and also at different prices.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide an improved cigarette vending-machine, having pockets, or apartments, of different sizes for receiving the packages of cigarettes, and having also coin chutes for each pocket, some of said pockets being provided with two chutes for coins of different sizes which require the placing of both coins into the machine, which are equivalent to the price of the packages desired, before the plunger can be operated.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a vending-machine which will permit coins of less than a predetermined character to pass through an opening in the coin chute, so that they will not engage the plunger.
Finally, the object of the invention is to provide a cigarette vending-machine having a spring actuated plunger approximately rectangular in shape with an opening intermediate its length upon one side, one arm of said plunger being provided with an enlarged head piece, and the opposite end of a smaller diameter and adapted to pass through an opening in the article ejecting means.

The casing, or cabinet, which contains the operative part of my improved vendingmachine may consist as shown on the drawings of a base or bottom piece, 1; the rear wall, 2; the two sides, 5 and 6; and a top, 7. I provide my cabinet with a glass front, 8, which extends entirely across the cabinet and through which it may be ascertained when the pockets are empty withoutopening the same. The glass front is provided with suitable retaining means at the top and bottom thereof. The lower front portion of the cabinet is formed of a curved metal piece, 9, having its lower portion cut away to form an opening through which the articles may be removed after the machine has been operated. I also provide a coin receptacle, 10, extending the full length of the cabinet and which rests upon the base of the same. Immediately above the drawer I provide a rocking shelf, 11, upon which the coins are at first received and after the weight of the coins exceed the weight of the shelf it automatically tips and the coins drop into the coin receptacle, 10. I provide the cabinet with a plurality of pockets. a, b, and c, which may be operated by the insertion of one coin and will contain cigarettes or other articles which may be dispensed by the insertion of a single coin. Pocket (Z is operated by two coins and will be supplied with cigarettes or other articles which may 1 be obtained by the insertion of two coins; e is a single coin operated pocket, while f requires two coins, and 9 but one. I do not limit myself to any particular number of pockets, as it will be observed in vending l212, on the edge of which I provide a shoulder, 13, and in arranging the cylinder in the cabinet the edges, 14, abut and form a channel into which the lower edges of the pocket partitions, 15, seat. The articles to be dispensed are held in a fixed position immediately in front of the article ejecting slide. The article ejecting slide comprises a horizontal top member, 16, having a beveled rear surface, and provided with a vertical extension, 17, having formed therewith two disk members, 20 and 21, each of which is provided with an aperture. The double cylinder is also provided with the slot, 22. The operating plunger, 23, has an arm, 24, formed integrally therewith, and a second arm, 25, having a disk shaped end, 26, suitably secured to the plunger, 23, terminates immediately opposite the end of the arm, 24,
y and between the ends of the arm 24 and 25 I 23, I provide a hand knob, 27, which is located on the outside of the cabinet, and between the front piece, 9, and the connecting link of the arm, 25, encircling the plunger, .23, I provide a coil spring, 28, which returns the plunger to an operating position after the same has been used to discharge the article from the pocket. The plunger has the additional arms, 30 and 31', as shown in Fig. 9. The arms 24 and 25 being set off to one side of the arm 23 permit the article in the pocket, when the machine is operated, to fall onto the base, without any obstruction from the spiral spring or other mechanism located therein.
I provide each of the pockets witha coin conducting chute, 37 having an incline portion, 32, aproximatelv midway the length of the chute. This incline portion having an opening therein through which coins of a dimension less than that of the coin which operates the machine may be thrown out.
On the inner surface of the chute at the incline, Iprovide rib, 33, on each side of the chute. The opening in-"the chute is provided immediately over the ribs, 33, so that the double cylinder, notches 34 and 35, which are located upon opposite sides of the slot, 22. In case one coin is placed in the machine and an attempt is made to operate the plunger with only one coin the article ejecting slide will be drawn into the notch 34 or 35 and will beprevented from operating until the other coin'is inserted. g
g In the modifications shown in Fig. 6 of the coin chute I substitute in place of the ribs, 33, a spring, 36, which will, in case a coin of a smaller dimension than that required to operate the machine has been inserted, eject the same through the opening in the same manner as the ribs in the preferred form.
7 The operation of mydevice iscas follows:
A person desiring to obtain one of the articles dispensed by the machine inserts a coin in each of the chutes which extend to the cylinders upon which the articles seat and the coins seating between the ends of the plunger and ejector slides will, when the plunger is drawn outward, move forward the article until the same falls on base 1 of the machine. If only one coin is inserted, and an attempt'made to operate the machine, the pull being on one plunger, will cause the ejector slide to engage the notches in the slot 22, and thereby prevent the operation of the machine until the second coin is dropped in the ad acent chute.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is: e
1. In a coin vending machine a cabinet provided with a plurality of pockets, a plurality of cylinders having a flat top surface provided with a central slot forming the bottom for said pockets, said cylinders extending parallel with each other,an article ejector comprising a horizontal memher and disk members suitably connected, adapted to reciprocate insaid slot, a plunger having a plurality of disks formed there'- with, said disks adapted to reciprocate within said cylinders, and coin chutes communicating with each cylinder adapted to convey a coin to the cylinder between the article ejector andthe plunger disks, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a coin vending machine afcabinet provided with a plurality of partitions forming pockets, a plurality of cylinders having a flat top surface provided with a central longitudinal groove, said flat top surface having extensions provided with a cut away edge portion, adapted to abut against the edge of the adjacent extension, forming a seat for the pocket partition, an article ejector comprising a horizontal member having a vertical member extending through the said'groove, and provided with disks, a plunger having a plurality of disks adapted to reciprocate within said cylinder, coin chutes connecting with each cylinder and adapted to convey coins tothe cylinders between the article ejector and plunger disks, as and for the purpose described.
3. In a coin vending machine, a cabinet provided with a plurality of partitions forming pockets, a plurality of cylinders having a fiat top surface provided With a central slot extending longitudinally between the cylinders, said flat surface having edges abutting against the edge of the adjacent cylinder forming a groove for the pocket partitions, an article ejector comprising a horizontal member and adapted to reciprocate in said slot, a plunger having a plurality of disks formed therewith, said disks adapted to reciprocate Within said cylinder, coin chutes communicating With each cylinder and adapted to convey a coin to the cylinder between the article ejector and plunger disk, as and for the purpose set forth.
