have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Synchronizing Apparatus, of
' -which the following is a specification.

Between the bracket 24 and the picture machine are interposed the Iuniversal joints 25 and 26 to engage the shaft 15 of the picture machine, with the brushV bracket 105 of the current transmitter 29.
The brackets 23' and 24 are supported on a base plate 27, carriedon the table plate 28 of the picturemachine for the said current transmitter'29. vThe latterv comprises the hollow barrel 30 of insulating material having at one end the screw disk 31 andthe other end of the barrel is fastened to the disk 32, which latter `is secured to the collector disk 3301i` insulating material which has formed therewith the boss 34. .A sleeve 16 fitted in the boss 34 and disk 31 is journal'ed on the shaft 22. To the disk-33 are fastened the metallic segments 35 to 50 and metallic rings 51, 52. Metallic rings 55 to 72 are secured to the barrel 30. 7 6 vconnects segment 36 with ring 58, and so on, eachsegment being connected' with one of the rings. A Wire 100 connects the ring 52 on the disk 33 with the ring 56 on the barrel 30, and a wire 101 connects the'ring 51 on the disk 33 with ring 55 on the barrel 30. In the upper ends of the brackets 23 and 24 is ournaled the shaft 102 having connected thereto the crank handle 103 and pinion 104. The latter meshes With a gear 106 fastened to the screw disk 31 of the barrel30.
The brush bracket y1,05 is journaled on shaft 22 and carries the brushes 107 and 108.
An adjusting nut 109 is in threaded engagey ment with Said shaft 22 and can be made to bear against the-hub 17 of the brush bracket 105 to regulate the tension of the brushes 107, 108 a einst the segments 35 to 50, and the rings 1 and 52. A sleeve 18 secured to the hub 17 supports the.v universal joint 26.
The brush .107'bears on the 4ring 52 and one vof the segments, andthe brush 108 bears on the ring 51 and on a diametrically opposite segment. A block 112 of insulating material extends from the base plate 27 which carries the brushes` 115 that bear on the rings 55 to 72. vWires 120 to 137 extend from the brushes 115 to the electric motor of the invention to be described.
' A talking machine is represented with the frame' 140, record 141 and horn 142. A shaft 143 0f the talkin 'machine has connected thereto the clutc 144, which is connected to the armature shaft 145 of the motor 146. The said motor has the brackets 147 for supporting the shaft145. Legs 148 support the brackets 147, and the cross brace 149 connects the upper ends of the brackets 147, and the cross brace 150 connects the legs 148.
An iron eldring 155 has secured thereto the rings 156, andfa brass ring157 connects the .rings 156. The ring 157 is fastened tothe cross braces149and 150. A continuous Wire is Wound aroundV the field ring 155 between the iron rings 156 forming the spools 158 that constitutes the field of the motor. The portions 1,59 of the wire connecting the spools arev connected by means of the wires 160, to the binding posts 161 on the insulat` ing plate 162 fastened to the bracket 147. The binding posts 161 are connected to the binding posts 163, and tothe latter are con-y nected the wires to 135.
On the shaft 145 is .supported a double pole armature comprising an iron core 165 With the Wire spool 166. A collector with the rings 167, 168, is supported on the shaft 145, and brushes 1170, 171 extend from the block 172 of insulating material carried on the bracket 147. The brushes bear on the rings 167, 168. A Wire 173 extends from the brush 170 to the battery 174 that is in circuit with the Wire 136,and the wire 137 is connected with the brush 171.
In Fig. 7 which diagrammatically represents the invention somewhat modified, the disk 33 is not provided With the rings 51 and 52, and the wires 136, 137 lead directly to the brushes 180, 181, which bear on a pair of the segments 35 to 50, and-current flows in this instance through the Wires 122, 130 to spools 158. The Wires 136 and 137 lead from the brushes 181, 180 respectively to the battery 174 and the brush 181. Fromthe said battery leads the Wire 173 to the brush 170. The brushes 170, 171 make contact With the rings 167 and 168.
In operating the invention the talking machine and picture machine are set in operative position, the clutches 25 and 144 being thrown in gear. The mechanism of the picture machine rotates the universal joints 25, 26 and the brush bracket 105 With its brushes 107, 108 by virtue of which opposite accompanying pairs of the segments 35 to 50 make contact successively with the brushes 107, 108, the rings 51, 52 being continuously in contact with said brushes. Current from the battery 174 flows through the Wire 136, one of the brushes 115, ring 56, Wire 100, ring 52, brush 107 to segment 48 in this instance, then through a wire, notl shown, to ring 70, oneof the brushes 115, Wire 122 to the coils 158. The current is noW divided right and left through two paths to the opposite side of the field, inducing positive and negative polarity in the ring core. The current flows through the Wire 130, one of the brushes 115, ring 62, Wire leading from ring 62 to the segment 40, brush 108, ring 51, wire 101, ring 55, one of the brushes 115, Wire 137, brush 171, collector ring 168, through the coil of the armature inducing polarity north andV south. Current then flows through the collector ring 167, brush 170, Wire 173 back to the battery 174. As the brushes 107, 108 are shifted the polarity in the field ring is correspondingly shifted around the ring of the motor dragging with it the armature. The armature cannot move faster than the rate at which the brushes 107 and 108 are rotated, and thus the armature of the motor and bracket 105 rotate in unison. A
By means of the pinion 104 and gear 106 the disk 33 and its Segments 35A to 50 are shifted to alter thelead of the current transmitter 29 with respect to the motor 146.
This is accomplished by rotating the shaft 102 by means of the crank 103, and constitutes a speed regulator for the motor, and brings the motorin step with the brushes on the 'brush bracket 105. Y
An electric switch 200 is introduced into the Wire 136 to facilitate the making and breaking of the current in starting and stopping the apparatus.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
1. In a synchronizing apparatus the combination of a current transmitter, a stationary shaft for the transmitter, a barrel of insulating material journaled on said shaft, metallic rings on the barrel, a collector disk of insulating material connected to the barrel, metallic segments extending from the disk, contact rings on the disk, conductors for electric current connecting the rings on the barrel with the segments and rings on the disks, brushes for the segments and the rings on the disk,'brushes for the rings on the barrel, means to turn the barrel with its disk and their appurtenances, Wires with a source of electricity connected to a pair of brushes of the barrel, Wires for electric current extending from the remaining brushes of the barrel, and an electric motor with the fields thereof connected to the latter Wires and an armature for the motor in circuit lWith the Wires having the source of electricity.
2. In a current transmitter the combination of a stationary shaft, a barrel of insulating material journaled on the shaft, metallic rings on the barrel, a collector disk of insulating material connected to the barrel, metallic segments and contact rings extending from the disk,conductors for electric current connecting the rings of the bar rel With segments and rings of the disk, a rotatable brush bracket for the disk, brushes extending from the latter and bearing on the rings and segments of the disk, means to vary the distance of the \brush bracket from the disk, a secondary shaft journaled adjacent to the stationary shaft, gearing connecting the secondary shaft 4With the said barrel, means to rotate the secondary shaft and thereby shift the location of the brushes with respect to the segments and thereby alter the lead of the current` transmitter.
3. In a synchronizing apparatus the combination of a shaft, a. current transmitter journaled on the shaft comprising a barrel of insulating material, metallic rings on the barrel, a collector connected to the barrel, metallic segments extending from the disk, contact rings on the disk, conductors for electric current connecting the rings on the barrel with the segments and rings on the disk, a rotatable brush bracket axially adjustable on the shaft, brushes extending from the bracket and bearing on the seg- 'ments and rings of the disk, brushes for .the rings on the barrel, means to rotate the barrel with its disk on its shaft, Wires with -a source of electricity connected to a` pair of brushes of the barrel, Wires for electric current extending from the remaining. brushes of the barrel, and an electric 'motor with the fields thereof Jconnected to the latter Wires and an armature for the motor in circuit with the Wires having the source of electricity.
