SHIFTABLE-SHEET BINDER.
intense.
Application filed January 26, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, JAMns C. Dawson, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Kirkwood, county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Shiftable-Sheet Binders, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying (lLELViIIgS, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to loose leaf binders of that type in which provision is made for positively holding the sheets in more than one position. Binders of this type are conveniently used for the purpose of distinguishing sheets upon which entries have been made from the remainder of the sheets in the binder. In the use of such binder the position of each sheet is shifted immediately upon the making of an entry thereon. Subsequently, when it is desired to examine those sheets having such entries, they are found to be readily distinguishable from the remainder of the sheets in the binder through the fact that their position is such as to cause the edges of the sheet to project beyond the corresponding side of the main body of sheets. After the examination of the entry, the sheet may be returned to its original position. From the foregoing it follows that the repeated handling of the sheets renders it important that the binder construction be made as simple as possible, as also that punching of the sheets be such as to reduce any possibility of tearing the sheets to a minimum.
The invention accordingly contemplates a construction in which the binder mechanism is exceedingly simple and the sheets are punched with a less number of filing apertures than have heretofore been required in binders of this type.
The object of the invention is to provide a shiftable sheet binder of improved construction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a detail perspective view showing one form of shiftable sheet binder embodying the features of improvement provided by the invention, one position of the parts being shown in dotted lines; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a sheet adapted for use in the form of binder illustrated in Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention the binder is desirably formed with three sets or pairs of filing prongs. The prongs, as 10, 11 and Patented May 25, 1915.
Serial No. 814,448.
12, 13, of two of these sets are so constructed as to form closed filing arches when in one position. The prongs, as 1 1-, 15, of the third set are located between the prongs of the first two mentioned. sets and are so con structed that their ends are separated at all times. The binder preferably also includes base and cover members. These are designated 16 and 17 respectively. The base member 16 serves as a support for the prongs. The cover member may run upon the prongs. For this purpose it is provided with filing apertures, as 17 one for receiving the prongs of each set. The manner of securing the prongs to the base member 16, and the mechanism for operating them to open and close the arches produced by the prongs of the two outer sets, may all be as shown and described in my Patent No. 1,077,682 for loose leaf binder, dated November 4t, 1913.
The sheets, as 28, to be used in the binders are each provided with a pair of slotted filing apertures, as 30, 81. These apertures are located in alinement and extend parallel with the inner or binding edge of the sheet. Each aperture is made of such length as to simultaneously receive, adjacent its opposite ends, one of the prongs, as 14, 15 of the intermediate set and one of the prongs, as 10, 11 of the outer set. In one position of the sheet, as 28, one of the apertures, as 30 is engaged with one of the prongs of the corresponding outer set and with one of the prongs of the intermediate set. In this position of the sheet, the other aperture, as 81 is engaged only with a prong, as 12 of the other outer set. When it is desired to shift the position of the sheet, the aperture, as 30 which had been engaged with the prong 14E of the intermediate set, is disengaged from this prong and the other aperture, as 31 is engaged with the prong 14., of the intermediate set. It will be observed that this shifting of the sheet may be accomplished by simply raising the sheet to a position which is higher than the ends of the prongs 14-, 15 of the intermediate set.
I claim as my invention,
1. In a shiftable sheet binder, in combination, a pair of filing prongs and a sheet having a slotted aperture, the spacing of the prongs and the length and location of the said aperture being such that the sheet is adapted to be held in one position by the engagement of both of the prongs with the said aperture and to assume a different position when only one of the prongs is engaged With the said aperture; a v
2. In a shiftable sheet binder, incombination, a pair of filing prongs, a sheet having a slotted aperture, the spacing of the prongs 1' and the length-and location of the saidaperture being such that the. sheet is adaptedto the sheet'xis adapted to beheld in one :posim tion by the engagement oftwo of the prongs with one of the apertures and the engagement of the remaining prong WitllilllG other aperture and in a difierent position by the engagement of the last mentioned prong and one of the said other two prongs with the last mentioned aperture of thesheet and'the engagement of the remaining one of the said other two prongs with the other aperture of the sheet." a 4. Ina 'shiftable sheet binder, in combination, three pairs of cooperating filing prongs arranged inparallel planes, the prongs of each of the two outer pairs mating to form a closed filing arch, and a sheet having two slotted filing apertures, the spacing of the said pairs of prongs and the length and, spacing of the said filing-apertures being such that the'sheet is adapted to be held in one position'bythe engagement of one of thesaid filing arches and one of the prongs of the intermediate pair withone of the apers v tures of the sheet and theengagement of the other filing arch with the other aperture of the sheet and in a different position byvthe engagement of the last mentioned filing arch 7 and one of the prongsof the intermediate pair with the last mentioned apertureof the sheet and the engagement of the other-filing arch with the other aperture of the sheet. 7
