Be it'known that I Gronon A. RoBINsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county-oi b'ulfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement 'in Carton-Blanks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention has special reference to a blank forthe formation of'that class of 1 cartons made of a single sheet of paper in which the carton has four side forming panels and a side sealing lap and four end forming flaps for each end of the carton. In the formation of the carton the blank is intended to be folded first into tubular form and the side sealing lap sealed and then the bottom forming flaps are folded leaving'the top closing fla 8 open as they are not to be folded until a er the carton is filled. Cartons made in this way are intended to be immediately conveyed to' the filling mechanism as soon as the, carton is formed and set up as distinguished from so-called knock .down cartons which are first made in the knock down form for convenience of pack ing and transportation or to be storedgaway for future use.
The present invention is intended to enable blanks to be made in quantities all of.
uniform size and character for use in making up on a carton forming machine but the blanks are formed independently of and separate from the carton formingmnchine so that they may be ready for use Wheneverdesired vfor forming into cartons instead of, as is sometimes done, cutting the blanks from a'web of paper and feeding them directly into the carton forming machine.-
The blanks are particularly intended for use in a carton forming machine in which the blanks are piled up in a stack in a magazine and the lowermost blank is Withdrawn from the magazine and delivered to the carton forming mechanism. In forming the carton out of these blanks it is intended to have the blank made into tubular form around a rectangular forming block so lo cated that the carrier mechanism may carry the blank from the stack to the forming Specification of Letters 1 mm. 7 P t t May 1 1 51 block, audit is still moreespecially intended for use in a machine of the' character shown and described in an application filed by me July 7, 1914, Ser. In order to enable the gluing mechanism to have access to the sealing flap portion of the blank while it is still in its position at the bottom of the stack and also so that the gripping mecha- I nism may have'an opportunity of. gripping it the magazine is so formed that the flap forming portions for forming the bottom are; unsupported on the under side. It is intended to have the gripping mechanism seize theblank after'the adhesive has been applied to the sealing flaps but to grip it at some other portion of. the bottom forming flaps than that to which the adhesive is applied so that the gripping mechanism will not become smearedwlth the adhesive. Inasmuch as there is no bottom support for e tage and will retain the blank in better form for the feeding mechanism if the end forming flap which is to be gripped remains tied laterally to the adjacent flaps until after the flap is seized by the gripping mechanism. In the machine shown in the application above referred to in order to enable the gripping mechanism to seize the lowermost blank a separator device is inserted between the unglued flap of the lowermost blank and the one immediately above it so as to afford an entrancefor one of the gripping jaws, the,
other gripping jaw engaging the said flap -on the under side. After the blank is once seizedby the grippers there is no further need of'the union between the unglued flap and the two adjacent flaps and therefore as flaps it is found that it is a great advan-- gluing pad an and it is necessary to have the union separated before the end flaps are folded some means are provided for completing the slit to the end of the flaps, thus makin complete the four end forming flaps. he particular means for completing this severing operation is shown in the application above referred to but as the severing mechanism in itself forms no part of the present division of said application the severing device is not shown or described herein.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawin s the novel features thereof will pointed out and clearly defined in the claims at the close of the specification.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a plan of a blank embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in section showing t e magazinewith a stack of blanks and a portion of the mechanism for applying adhesive to the end forming flaps and showing the separator device engaged beneath the lowermost blank, the gluing mechanism being at the outerend of its stroke. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section'showinga portion of the same apparatus as in Fig. 2 with the gluing device engaged with the blank and the separator finger just about entering between the lowermost blank and the one above it after the separating fingers'have been fully moved back from the position of Fig. 2 and again moved forward. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion of the flap gluing mechanism.

to form the bottom of the carton and pref-' erably four end flaps j, is, Z, m to close the top of the carton after it is filled. The blank is scored along the lines indicated by the dotted lines to facilitate folding and. the
. full lines between the end closing flaps indicate where it is out through. It is to be noted that the lines of out n, 0 between laps f and g and between 9 and h respectively do not extend quite to the outer edge of the flaps so that there is still a slight union between the said. flaps f, 9' and between the flaps g, k which can be easily severed at the proper time, while the line of out 39 between the flaps it and a and the lines of out between all of the top closing flaps are cut clear to the outer edge. The reason for this is that it is desired to retain the flaps f, g and'h in better supporting connection with each other, as already referred to, and to prevent any one of said three end flaps from dropping one below the other when they project from the holder or magazine preliminary to the gluing, and so that the flap 9 will be bent down with the flaps and h by the action of the so that when the separator of a plurality ti ers enter between the lowermost'blank an the stack above the lowermost blank, the separator fingers will slightly lift the flaps f, g, h of thestack as shown in Fig. 2 thus allowing space for the grippers as will appear more clearly in the description hereinaften, In appl ing adhesive it is intended to apply it to t e outer faces only of the flaps which are to be glued that is, on the faces, which when the blank is folded, will face outward from the forming block rather than toward the form'in block. 'In the particular form of blank s own it is intended that the two flaps f, It shall be folded before the flaps g, 2'. These two flaps f, I, which are shorter than the other two -flaps may either overlap each otheryor simply come to a meeting edge and when the flap 1 is folded over onto the glued faces of the flaps f, h and then the flap 9 will be folded over onto the outer face of the flap i which has the adhesive. It is therefore unnecessary to apply adhesive to the flap g, and that is the one which is intended to be seized by the grippers to draw the blank out from the stack and deliver it to the carrier which will transfer it to the proper position to be formed into shape on the forming block;
It has not been deemed necessary to show in the present division of the application all of the mechanism for gluin the flaps and for handling the blank in withdrawing it from the magazine and carrying it to the carton forming mechanism but a portion of the apparatus is shown for the purpose of a little more clearly illustrating the advantage of the invention. The holder or magazine in which the blanks 1 are stacked up consists of horizontal rolls 2 spaced apart from each other in the form of a grid on which the pile of blanks rests and our upright corner posts bars 3 which have wingsat right angles to each other so that each post will have faces which engage two edges of the blank. In
the drawings only two of these upri ht posts or angle bars 3 are shown, name y, those which are at one side of the stack of blanks. The other two corner posts are similar, the
said corner posts being disposed in such manner as to 86 at the four corners of a rectangle.
The rolls 2 are journaled in the frame of the machine. bottom supports-so that the bottom blank may be more easily drawn out from beneath the weight of the other blanks in the stack. It will be noted from the drawings that these bottom supporting rolls are beneath theJbody of the blank which forms the side forming panels and also are beneath the end closing flaps for one end of. the carton, namely, those which are to close the to but there are no rolls beneath the end c osing flaps at the other end of the blank, namely,

said bottom forming flaps being extensions respectively of the panels for the body of the carton, an intermediateone of said bottom forming flaps being partially separated from the two adjacent flaps by slits at both sides-of said intermediate flap in alinement with the said folding lines and which extend from the endsof the said folding lines between the panels and between the flaps toward the outer end of the flap but stopping short of the end thereby leaving a slight union for the flaps at their outer ends.
