To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of WVeld and State of Colorado, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in dumping wagons, for carrying and unloading coal or other material.
An important object of the invention is to provide a dumping wagon of the aboveincntioned character which may be unloaded in a highly convenient and expeditious manner.
A further object of the invention is to pr vide a dumping wagon of the above mentioned character, so constructed that its its may be discharged upon either side thereof.
A further object of the invention is to a dumping wagon of the aboveniontio. ;d character which is simple in construction, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, strong and durable.

ln the dra 'ings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodin'ient of my invention, the numerals 5 and designate the front and rear wheels of a wagon, upon which is mounted an exterior body 7, preferably of the shape shown. There are preferably springs 8 interposed between the forward and rear portions of the outer body 7 and the wheels. The outer body 7 comprises sides 9, a rear end 10 and a front end 11, as shown.
Arranged below the outer body 7 and preferably equi-distantly spaced from the ends thereof is a transverse chute 12, embodying side walls 13, which are spaced, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3. The bottom of this chute is open, the same being adapted Specification of Letters Patent.

The numeral 14: designates an extension chute adapted for detachable connection with either end of the transverse chute 12, by any suitable means, for conducting the material from proximity to the transverse chute. Attached to the opposite ends of the chute are stop brackets 18 for a purpose to be described.
As more clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the numeral 15, designates a vertically swinging bottom, which is arranged within the transverse chute 12 and adapted to have either end lower, as will be explained. W hen in the upper position, the bottom 15 assumes a horizontal position preventing material from discharging through either end of the transverse chute 12. Pivotally connected with the opposite ends of the bottom 15 are links 17, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the upper portion of locking levers, members or vertically swinging plates 18, adapted to swing transversely with respect to the outer body 7. The locking levers or plates 18, as more clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4 are hinged or pivoted at 19, to the side beams 18 of the outer body of the wagon. Latches 20 are pivoted or rotatably connected at 21 with the sides 9 and are adapted for releasable engagement with the upper ends of the locking arms 18.
From the foregoing description it is obvious that the locking levers 18 may be securely retained in the vertical position, holding the bottom 15 in the upper closed horizontal position, and upon the proper manipulation of the latches 20 either locking lever may be released, and swung downwardly with the result that the corresponding end of the bottom 15 will swing downwardly to occupy the inclined position, allowing of the free discharge of the material through that end of the transverse chute. As clearly shown in Fig. 2 the lever or plate 18 extends substantially across the entire width of the chute, and when the bottom 15 is lowered, the plate 18 is inclined downwardly, thus serving to deflect the upper portion of the discharge material into the chute. When the lever or plate 18 is in the active or closed position it is substantially vertical, there being very little tendency, if any, for the same to swing downwardly, whereby excessive strain is removed from the latches 20, preventing them from breaking and rendering their manipulation more convenient. When one looking lever is swung downwardly to lower that end of the bottom 15, the other lever 18 serves as a pivot support for the bottom 15.
The numeral 22 designates body false bottoms, arranged within the outer body- 9 and adapted to swing vertically or longitudinally of the same. The false bottoms 22 are arranged upon opposite sides of the transverse chute 12 with their inner end pivoted adjacent the same, as shown at 23. The outer ends of the false bottoms 22 are preferably bent upwardly forming end portions 2%. It is obvious that if the false bottoms 22 are swung upwardly the material held within the outer body 9 will be fed or directed into the transverse chute 12.
Rigidly connected preferably with the outer surface of the sides 9 are inwardly inclined standards 01" supports 25. Rotatably mounted upon the upper ends of the stand ards 25, are drums, hoisting mechanisms or windlasses 26. Flexible elements, suchv as chains 27 are connected with the drums 26 to be wound thereon and with the false bottoms 22, preferably at the outer ends thereof, as shown at 28. One end of the drum 26 is preferably formed square or other than round in cross section, as shown at 29, for detachable connection with a hand crank 30, by means of which the same may be turned or rotated. Rigidly secured to that end of the drum 26 is a ratchet wheel 31, engaged by a spring pressed pawl 82, pivoted to the adjacent standard 25 as shown. It is obvious that this pawl and ratchet mechanism serves to prevent improper unwinding rotation of the drum 26, the pawl being adapted to be manually moved out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 21 to allow the false bottom 22 being lowered.
The'numeral 35 designates removable vertical partitions, to be inserted within the body 7, when it is desired to carry different materials.
The operation of the wagon is as fol-' lows :The longitudinally swinging false bottoms 22 being in the horizontal closed positions, the wagon may be readily loaded in the customary manner. When the load has been transported to its destination, either end of the transversely swinging bottom 15 may be moved to the lower open position by releasing the corresponding'locking lever 18, as is obvious. This having been done the material will be discharged upon the corresponding side of the wagon,
charge of the material is aided by raising the false bottoms 22.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is not to be taken as the preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit'of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention what I claim, is
1. In adumping wagon of the character described, the combination with a body, of a transverse chute depending therefrom, a vertically swinging bottom for the transverse chute having one end thereof arranged adjacent one side of the body, a locking lever pivotally connected with the outer side of the body ata point spaced a substantial distance from the top of the body and adapted to swing in a substantially vertical plane transversely thereof and to assume a substantially vertical active position in engagement with the outer side of the body to be held against movement in one direction thereby, a releasable latch to hold the looking lever in the substantially vertical active position, and a link pivotally connecting the locking lever with the vertically swinging bottom.
2. In a dumping wagon of the character described, the combination with a body, of
a transverse chute depending therefrom, a vertically swinging bottom. for the transverse chute, a plate arranged above and extending transversely of the chute for substantially its entire width and pivotally connected with the side of the body whereby the same is adapted to assume a substantiallyvertical active position and a downwardly inclined position to deflect the upper portion of the discharging material into the chute, links pivotally connecting the ends of the plate with the edges of the bottom,
and releasable means to lock the plate in the substantially vertical active position.
