declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in valves, particularly for gas engines and has for its object to generally improve rotary valves so that warping thereof is prevented and leakage'of gas is effectually prevented or reduced to a minimUIIL/ Another important object of my invention is to provide a valve of the character described which owing to its peculiar construction insures the proper opening and closing of the ports and reliable operation of the engine to which it is attached.
Another important object of my invention is to provide a valve of the character described which is extremely simple as to. construction, reliable and eflicient in operation and cheap to manufacture.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out as claimed.
With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the, several views of which similar refereng'ge numerals designate corresponding partszFigure 1 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view of an engine cylinder showing myimproved valve in operative position and a portion of the operating mechanism therefor- Fig 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is detai perspective of my improved valve remov ed from the cylinder, and Fig. at is atop plan view of a modified form of valve wherein the ports are elongated instead of circular.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety an engine cylinder having the usual upper wall or head 2- through which is formed intake and exhaust ports fiend fl respectively. The outer face of the Wall or head 2 of the cylinder 1 is provided with a shallow circular recess 5 to rotatably receive my impr oved valve to be later described.
As a means for holding my improved valve in operative position upon the recess 5 I provide aqplate 6 secured upon the wall or head 2 by bolts 7 and removable therefrom. The plate 6 is provided with openings 8 and 9 which communicate respectively with the ports 3 and 4 and are suitably connected after a manner not shown with the intake and exhaust pipes. The inner face of the plate 2 bears upon the outer face of} the valve and serves to hold the valve in place and it being removable enables the readyassembling and disassembling of the valve.
improved valve comprises a circular disk 10 that is provided with a plurality of arcuately arranged and spaced openings 11 that are arranged to cotiperate with the ports 3 and 4Jand openings 8 and 9 after a manner which will be later more fully described. A depending peripheral flange 12 ,is formed on the disk 10 and is positioned within a circular groove 13 formed in the upper face 1 the head or top wall 2 of the cylinder 1.; This groove 13 opens into the recess 5 around the side wall of said recess. A depending circular flange 14 is formed on the disk 10 is spaced circumferentially from the flange l2 and positioned within a groove 15 simil r/ to the one 13 that is formed in the head ortop wall 2 of the cylinder 1. The flanges 12 and 14 are arranged to rotate within the grooves 13 and 15 and serve to insure the proper registration of the openings 11 in the valve with the intake and exhaust ports.

peculiar disposition thereof not only serves the upper end of the pin 16 is a bevel gear 17 that cooperates with a similar gear 18 keyed; upon one end of a shaft 19 that is operatively connected with some rotating part of the engine after, a manner not shown. Through the medium of the gears 17 and 18 and coiiperating parts, the valve is'rotated.
The openings 8 and 9 and corresponding ports 3 and 4 are arranged diametrically opposite while the openings 11 in the valve are arranged in such a way that no one of them is opposite another thus the proper intaking andexhausting action is proved. I preferably provide five openings in the valve so that it may be readily adapted for use in connection with two and four cycle engines.
It will be noted that the openings 11 in the valve or disk 10 are positioned between the flanges 12 and 14 thus no interference of proper registration of the openings 11 with the ports is had by the flanges.
The positioning of the disk within the recess 5 and the provision of the peculiarly arranged flanges 12 and 14 on the disk that rotate within grooves 13 and 15 in combination with the clamping action provided by the. plate 6 prevents leaking of the valve, warping, eliminates friction and insures the proper operation of the valve.
In practice, I have found that the form of 'mv invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changesin details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages'of my invention, as set forth.
What is claimed is 1. The combination with an engine cylinder of a disk having a plurality of spaced apertures therein, the up er wall of said cylinder being provided wi l-h a recess to rotatably receive said disk, said cylinder having opposed intake and exhaust ports in its upper wall, a plate removabljg secured to said cylinder and engaging said ldisk said plate having openings therein alinin'g with the intake and exhaust ports, means or rotating said disk and spaced circumfeiiential flanges formed on said disk and rotatably mounted in grooves in the upper wall of said cylinder.
2. The combination with an engine ylinder having its upper wall provided upon its outer face with a circular recess-and circular grooves in said upper wall communicatin-g with said recess and s aced from each other of a circular dis mounted within said recess and provided with a plurality of spaced openings, intake and exhaust ports formed in the upper wall of said cylinder and adapted to communicate with the openings in said disk, and plates having openings therein alining with the intake and exhaust ports secured upon the upper wall ofsaid cylinder and engaging the outer face of said disk, a in rigid with the central portion of said dis and extending upwardly through said plate, means for rotating said disk and operatively connected with said pin and spaced circumfer ential flanges formed upon one side of said disk and rotatably mounted within said grooves.
