'T0 all @from it mag/concern :l
l Be it known that 1Ti1oiMiis a subject of the "King of Englandnresidingin ,the city and county of SanFran'cisco nand State of Californiafhave invented'lifewp-and usefulv Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which, the followingis a specification.
vThis invention relates Vto foldable umbrellas, parasols, and the like, and more" particularly' to improvements over Patents #1,042,522 and #1,045,358,invented by J. Aragall and assigned to me.
The object of the present 'invention ,is to simplify and improve the construction shown in the former patents, and particularly to provide a more rigid and simple locking mechanism between the umbrella rod and handle.
Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the Vparts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a central vertical section showing the umbrella assembled. Fig. 2 is a similar section showing the umbrella in the folded or dissembled position. Fig. 3 is a" detail exterior view looking at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-section on line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the handle section.
The umbrella consists primarily of a handle section A, a tubular rod 2, and a rod extension or tip 3. The ribs and stretchers of the umbrella together with the covering are secured to the tubular rod in the usual manner asl at 4, and the upper and lower latches 5 and 6 are provided to secure the ribs in the extended or folded position. The rod extension is foldable with relation to the tubular'rod and the umbrella handle is detachable with relation to same to reduce the structure as a whole in length as much as possible for convenience of packing, carrying, etc. and this is accomplished in the following manner: Suitably secured to the handle A is a short rod extension 7 and mounted in said rod is a spring actuated latch member 8. Rod 7 is inserted in the form a lock between the tubular rod and handle. For the purpose of reinforcing and strengthening the connection formed be- Stemat-in faisais-remata 'i @612mm unitaria.,
tweenthe tubularroid and handle andalso .fory the lpurp(rise of providing lmeans by which the extension rod 8 may be actuated and; secured, a slejevemembe,` 10 has been fnerieelf. .ibis `Sleeve .is Sli ably mounted on theexterlor of the tubular rod 42 and the movementof same is limitedin one direction by a pin 11 which passes through a pair of `slots 1,2l formed in thel tubular rod, and inv the opposite direction by. latch 8 handle A. A flexible connectionis formedbetween .121 with connected sleeve 10 and the lower rodexten'sion Biby'awire rod 13 `and al pair of links 14 and 15. By sliding sleeve 10 downwardly on the tubular rod, or away through rod 13 and links 14 and 15 to force extension 3 out of the lower end of the tubular rod, and links 14 and 15 will then permit the extension to be foldedy over, as shown at 16 in Fig. 2, thus shortening the umbrella structure considerably. An lupward pull on the sleeve will drawthe rod extension 3 back into the tubular rod and the sleeve will at the same time pass over latch 8 and become engaged by same. Latch 8 will thus serve the function of a triple lock, as it not only secures the umbrella handle, but also kthe sleeveand lower rod extension. It will at the same time reinforce the connection be-V tween the handle and tubular rod, thus producing a more rigid structure atthis point.
The lower rod extension or umbrella tip 3 is preferably provided with a'groove or key-way 17 and the tubular rod 2 with a key 18 to prevent any turning movementiof ther tip with connected links 14-15, etc. The tip or lower rod extension is` furthermore provided near its lbase with a xed exterior cap 19 which ts down over the pivotal connection 4 of the ribs to form a water tight connection. It also acts as a stop to limit the inward movement of the tip and furthermore helps to secure the umbrella cover ing andprotect it 'from injury at this point.
When it is desired to fold the umbrella, itis only necessary to depress latch 8 a notch 2O being formed in vthe sleeve to permit depression of the latch. The sleeve when released is then pushed down on the tubular rod away from the handle and this movement is transmitted to eject the umbrella tip which is then folded over, as in Fig. 2. VThe handle is then extracted and the whole lstructure may be placed in a covering g and One of the chief advantages of the present construction is that the single locking or latching means provided by the detent 8 serves to lock the handle A, hollow rod 2 and sleeve 10 together into a rigid unitary structure; and that the release of the sleeve from the detent does not operate to sever the rigid connections vbetween the handle and the remainder of the umbrella or parasol.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- In a folding umbrella, the combination with a hollow rod, of a tip movable into and out of the lower'end of the rod, links pivotally connected to the tip, a handle having a hollow rod extension removably engaged in the upper end of the rod, said extension having a slot formed therein, a latch pivotally connected interiorly of the extension,
a sleeve slidably mounted on the rod, said sleeve and rod having registering slots which also register with the slot of the eX- tenson, said latch being adapted to engage in said slots to hold the sleeve, rod and eX- tension in iiXed relation, said rod having a pair of slots formed therein, a pin slidably engaged in said slots and having its ends fixed to the sleeve, and a rod mounted interiorly of the hollow rod and having its lower end connected to the inner one of said links and its upper end connected centrally of said pin.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS SLATTER.
