EUGENE W. SALKELD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO ALNEY E. CHAFFEE AND ONE-THIRD TO ERNEST W. BRADFORD, OF
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
CLOTHES-LINE CLIP. 7 g t Application filed July 31, 1907.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE W. SALKELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention consists in an improved construction of devices for securing goods, articles of clothing, etc., on clothes-lines for drying purposes, whereby said articles may be secured in place without contact with the clothes-line itself and the securing devices will always bein position for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure l is a perspective view of a section of clothes-line having two of my securing devices thereon and showing an ar ticle of goods attached to the line thereby, thus illustrating the use of the invention, Fig. 2 a side elevation of the securing device or clip separately, as when not in use, Fig. 3 a similar view showing an article of goods secured therein, and Fig. 4 an edge view thereof.
Said securing device, or clip, comprises a wire A doubled at the middle and bent so that the two branches are normally substantially parallel for a distance and then bent outwardly away from each other, forming a wide opening through which a portion of the article of clothing or goods may be inserted. The two ends are then bent toward each other to form horizontal portions a which cross at a central point, from which point their extreme ends a are curved upwardly and backward toward each other, forming an eye which is adapted to encircle the clothes-line.
In use, these securing clips are strung upon a clothes-line in suflicient number for the purpose and remain permanently thereon. When it is desired to hang clothes or goods upon the line to dry it is only neces-' sary to slide these devices, or clips, into suitable position to attach the goods at the points desired, slip a portion of the goods Copies of thispatent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

through the wide opening and draw it down between the parallel portions of the clip into its narrow lower end. This serves not only to clamp the goods securely in the clip but forces its sides apart, which draws the curved end a, forming the eye, tightly against the sides of the clothes-line and clamps the clip securely in position on said clothes-line.
These clips, or securing. devices, are preferably made of metal having sufficient spring property so that when the goods are removed therefrom their sides will spring toward each other somewhat, opening the eye so that they may be readily slid along to any position desired upon the clothes-line. They are also formed of noncorrosive material so that they will not rust or leave any marks upon articles secured in them.
A most efiicient securing device is thus not only provided, but the annoyance of hunting for clothes-pins is avoided, as the fastening devices are always upon the line and cannot become lost or misplaced.
Havingthus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
As'an article of manufacture a clothes line clip adapted to normally slide freely on a line comprising a single piece of wire doubled intermediate of its ends to form branches having a narrow clothes holding slot therebetween and each of said branches being bent at its free end to form an eye,
' which eyes are adapted to normally register five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
