This lever is provided with a tubular or hollow .handle 20, one end of which is yieldingly held within an annular recess or seat 21 provided in the outer end of the lever 19. This annular recess 21 is concentrically related to a threaded opening 22 provided in the end of the lever in which one end of a tube 23 is threaded. A portion of the bore of the hollow handle 20 is contracted or re duced in diameter as indicated at 24: to closely surround thetube 23 which projects into the larger portion of the handle bore. This tube upon its outer end is provided with an". integral head or nut 25 against which one end of a coil spring 26 bears. The other end ofthis spring is suitably secured to the movable lever handle .20. A. rod or pin 27 is loosely disposed through the tube or sleeve 23 and is provided upon its outer end with an exteriorly threaded head 28 for engagement with interior threads ofthe handle bore. .A coil spring 29' is arranged within the outer end of the'handle 20 upon the pin 27. One end of this spring is fixed to the head 28 and the other end thereof bears against the end of the tube 23, said spring acting to normally force the handle 20 and the pin 27 carried thereby outwardly. The inner end of this pin is adapted to be received through an opening 30 in the front wall of the casing 15, and said pin is provided with an annular reduced portion, forming-a groove 31. The extremity of the pin is rounded or convex as shown and is adapted to engage the opposed rollers 32 mounted upon the angular arms or levers 33 fulcrumed. as at 3& upon the front wall These rollers are forced or spread, apart by the pin 27 against the action of the coil springs 35 which are connected to the levers 33 and to bracket arms 36 secured to the casing wall. The end of the pin 27 engages the spring blade 17 and forces the contact member 16 mounted upon said blade into engagement with the relatively stationary contact member 14, said pin bein held against reverse movement by means 0- the rollers 32, the spring 35 being sufiioiently strong to overcome the tendency of the spring 29 to force the handle and pin outwardly to their normal positions The contact member 142 is preferably held yieldingly in opposed relation to the movable contact 16 by means of a spring 37 so, as to compensate for wear of the contacts and insure the proper closing of the circuit.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the control lever is brought to its normal position to stop .the car at the floor landing, the switch pin 27 is directly opposite the opening 30 in the wall-of the casing or housing 15. In the movement of the lever, the operator pulls outwardly upon the handle 20, so that the-movement of the pin 27 will not be obstructed. U on release of the handle the springs 26 and 29-move the handle 20 to its normal position and seat the same in the annular groove 21 in the end of the control lever, the end of the pin 27 moving through the opening 30 and into engagement with the rollers 32 and the movable blade 17. The rollers 32 engage in the annular groove 31 in the end of the pin as above explained, overcoming the reverse action of the spring 29 and holding the con tact 16 in engagement with the contact i l, thereby closing the circuit through the electromagnet l2 andenergizing the same to attract the armature plate 11 and thus actuate the fioor'selector switch to close the circuit for the door operating mechanism 7 and move the elevator door or gate to its open position. As the pin 27 must first be retracted from the casing 15, thereby breaking the circuit of the magnet 12, before the control lever can be moved to start the car, it will be obvious that the position of the movable element of the floor selector switch 10 is reversed to reverse the operation of the motor and close the elevator door or gate before the car leaves the floor landing. Liability of accident and serious injury caused by persons falling down the elevator shaft when the door or gate is left open through inadvertence or negligence on the part of the operator, will thus be obviated. From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of my improved switch will be clearly understood. As the device comprises but few elements in its construction, it will be obvious that the same is highly efiicient and strong and durable in practical use. By mounting the movable element of the switch directly upon the handle of the operators control lever, it will be apparent that the switch may be manipulated with ease andquickness and the necessity of the car operator leaving his station is thus avoided.
ile I have illustrated and described what at the present time is deemed to be the preferable embodiment of the invention, it is obvious that the device is susceptible of various modifications in the 'form, proportions and minor details of construction such as may be necessitated in order to adapt the invention to peculiar existing conditions, without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of the essential features thereof. The specific form of door operating mechanism shown is not claimed in this application but is made the subject matter of my co-pending application for patent for elevator door operating and locking devices filed January 11, 1913'and numbered serially 741,604. The particular form of floor selector switch shown herein is not claimed in this application but is made the subject of my co-pending application entitled Floor selector switch, filed December 24, 1912 and numbered serially 738,496. 4 Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a moving element, a device for controlling the movements of the element, of an electric circuit carried by the element, a magnet in the circuit, a switch in the circuit, means carried by the movable element of the device for engaging the contacts of said switch, and an armature cooperating with said magnet, the armature being stationary relatively to the movement of the element.
2. The combination with a moving element, a device for controllin the movements of the same, and a lever or operating the device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, an operators switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the circuit, and means mounted on the lever and movable in relation thereto to engage the contacts and close the magnet circuit, and an armature cooperating with the magnet, said armature being stationary relatively to the movement of the element.
3. The combination with a moving elemcnt, a device for controlling the movements of the same and a leverfor operating the device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, a switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the magnet circuit, and means mounted upon the end of the leveri and movable with relation thereto toengage the movable contact with the stationary contact and close the magnet circuit and an armature cocperating with the magnet, said armature being stationary relatively to the movement of the element. i v
4. The combination with a moving'element, a device for controllin the movements of the same and a lever or operating the device, of an electro-magnet carriedby the element, a circuit for the magnet, a
switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the circuit, means carried by and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engagethe movable contact with the stationary contact and close the circuit, means for permitting such engagement only when said lever is in position to stop the moving element, a handle on the lever, said handle carrving the contact operating means and an armature cooperating with the magnet. v
5. The combination with a moving element, a device for controlling the movements of the same and a lever forioperating the device, of an electro-magnet' carried by the element,'. a circuitfor the magnet, a
contacts arranged in the circuit, means carriedby and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engage the movable contact with the stationary contact and close the circuit, means for permitting such engagement only when said lever is in position to stop the moving element, a relatively movable handle on the lever, said handle carrying the contact operating means, and an armature cooperating with the magnet.
6. The combination with a moving element, a device for controlling the movements of the same and a lever for operating the device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, a switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the circuit, means carried by and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engage the movable contact with the stationary contact and close the circuit when said lever is in position to stop the moving element,.said means operating to prevent movement of the controller lever to start the moving element without first breaking the circuit, and an armature cooperating with the magnet.
7 The combination with a moving element, a device for controlling the movements of the same and a lever for operating the device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, a switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the circuit, means carried by and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engage the movable contact with the stationary contact and close the circuit when said lever is in position to stop the moving element, said means acting to prevent movement of the controller lever to start the moving element while the magnet circuit is closed, and an armature cooperating with the magnet.
8. The combination with a moving ele ment, a device for controlling the move ments of the same and a lever for operatingthe device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, a switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the circuit, spring pressed means carried by and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engage the movable contact with the stationary contact and close the circuit when said lever is in position to stop the moving element, a handle on the lever, said handle switch including stationary and movable being connected to the contact operating 1 isb &
contacts arranged in the circuit, means carried by and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engage the movable contact with the stationary contact and close the circuit when said lever is in position to stop the moving element, said means acting to lock the controller lever in such position, and an armature cooperating with the magnet.
10. The combination with a moving element, a device for controlling the movements of the same and a lever for operating the device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, a switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the circuit, spring pressed means carried by and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engage the movable contact with the stationary contact and close the circuit when said lever is in position to stop the moving element, said means acting to lock the controller lever against movement while the circuit is closed, and an armature cooperat' ing with the magnet.

12. The combination with a moving element, a device for controlling the movements of the same and a lever for operating the device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, a switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in. the circuit, spring pressed means carried by and movable relatively with the lever and operating to engage the movable contact with the statlonary contact and close the circuit when said lever is in position to stop the moving element, means cooperating with the. c1rcu1t closing means'to hold the same against retraction and lock the lever in positlon, and an armature cooperating with the magnet.
13. 15. The combination with a moving element, a device for controlling the movements of the same and a lever for operating the device, of an electro-magnet carried by the element, a circuit for the magnet, a switch including stationary and movable contacts arranged in the circuit, a handle movably mounted on the lever, a circuit closing device carried by said handle, means for holding the handle against movement and acting to engage said device with the movable contact carrying member to close the circuit when the lever is in position to stop the moving element, and additional. nfeans coacting with said device to hold the same against retraction and lock the lever while the circuit is closed, and an armature cooperating with the magnet.
16.
