Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915.
' Application filed August 30, 1913. Serial No. 787,484.
To whom it maygcorwcmj:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. CALNAN,
' a citizen of the United State's-residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State ofIowa, have invented certain new anduse- .ful Improvements in Portable Distributing- Machines; and-I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact. description of the invention, such as will enable others Skilled in theart to which it'appertains to make and use the same.
This invention. is .a device to be used in the construction of pavements for pouring and distributing melted pitch,;tar,-jcement or other binding and filling material into the crevices orjoints between rows of paving blocks and thelike. 1 I
The objects of the invention are, first, to
producea light, cheap, practical portable machine which can distribute'or pour the binding or filling material into the crevices or on the surface of pavements,.and which can be rapidly operated to direct the hind ing material into crevices or over surfaces;
second," to so construct the machine-that the parts, which areliable to become coated or caked with the material through use, may be instantly cleaned; third,to allow for an interchange of parts to adapt the device for varying widths of. pavingblocks and the like; fourth,to permit the-ready removal of parts which become' obstructed or clogged through caking of the material from the reservoir without a change in the fluid con-,.
trol mechanism; fifth, to' control the flow of the filling material through the discharge spouts. I
The mach ne or device comprises a suitable reservoir, ofthe portable type, t o hold fluid passages.
In the accompanying drawings, Figural is a'side elevation, partly in section, of a multiple'spout pouring machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 1s a front elevation of a multiple spout pouring machine. ,Fig. 3
' is a fragmentary view of removable spout plates. Fig. at is a transverse section of an individual discharge spout and valve member showing the cleaning device, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of another embodiment ofthe invention disclosing separate valve operating devices.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures;
- In the preferred. embodiment of the invention as shown in the accompanying, drawings, A represents a. reservoir'ofany suitable construction which is supported by a truck-or carriage having wheels, 13, whereby the machine or device can be transported over the surface to be treated. In the constr'uctionshown, the reservoir A, preferably havingan open upper end,=is provided at opposite sideswith stud axles or trunnions,
b, on which the wheels B, are journaled.
For the proper transportation'of the machine, handles'O, are used which are se cured to, and project rearwardly from suitable'supporting means, such as brackets c,
to which the axles are secured.
For the purpose of allowing an interchange of spouts for filling crevices-between paving blocks of difiere nt widths, there is cured to lower end of reservoir A by suit- 'able bolts 03, which pass through holes in said plate D, and through a flange a, on reservoir A. The spout. plate D contains -one or more fluid directing elements or spouts, E, suitably spaced for the purpose of distributing the material over desired surfaces. v
In order to control the flowof the filling or bindingmater al from the reservoir-A,
valves F, are used. The valveF is-shown in Fig 4,as connected to the lower end 'ofa rod f, which rod .is pivoted at its upper end to-bell-cra-nk lever f mounted on a transverse shaft G, which is connected by an arm of lever f to a valve operating rod f extending to a handle 7.
provided a removable plate D, which is sethrough the spouts E, manually controlled In order to separately controlthe flow ofthe filling or binding material .fromthe reservoir A, through the individual spouts manually controlled valves F are shown in Fig, 5. .Each valve F, is therein shown connected to the lower endof a rod f which is pivpte'd at itsupper end to bellecrank. lever mounted on a standard G In this embodiment, the standard G is secured to the top edge of reservoir A, and is connected through an arm of lever f to the valve operating lever or handle f A rod H may be employed whereby an operator may control the action of eachindividual valve or open and close all valves simultaneously.
A pointed plunger I is provided to aii'ord' means'of readily cleaning the opening through the spouts l] and to prevent bstructions or choking by particles of the over whichfthey are drawn, removable spout points may be provided which are attached by suitable screw means to the spouts E. a It willbe understood that the cb'nstruction and arrangement of parts may be varied to suit the different conditions of use, and that.
the'inventi'on is not restricted to the precise construction shown and described.
Having thusdescribed my invention, What I claim asnew is:
1. In a machine of the character described, a substantially rectangular reservoir, one end of whlch is contracted to form an elongated discharge mouth, a flange pro-' permit .the How truding from the wall of the reservoir at the discharge mouth, a single discharge spout plate adapted to be removably secured to said flange to close said mouth, a plurality of nozzles carried by the spout plate, a valve for each nozzle, separate actuating devices for each of said valves to operate the valves independently, a pivot rod common to all of said actuating devices, and means whereby all of said valve actuating devices may be operated simultaneously.
2. In a machine of the character described,
a reservoir, the base of which is out of parallel alinement with top thereof, said base and front wall being projected forwardly and converging toward an elongated mouth, a spout plate adapted'to be secured to said mouth, a plurality of nozzles carried by the spout plate, a valve for each nozzle, separate actuating devices for each of said valves to operate the valves independently, a pivot rod common to all of' said actuating devices, and means whereby all of said valve actuating devices may be operated simultaneously.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
