Specication of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H.,M1NER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to .the accompanying.

In the drawings 10, 10 represent a draft sill or parts of the car frame to which the draft rigging is attached, 11, 11 the stop members, 12 the draw bar carry iron, 14 the end sill, 15 the buffer block, 16 the draw bar, 17 the draft yoke, 18 the frontfollower, 19 the tie plate and draft yoke carry plate; all of said parts being of well known construction, and serving their usual functions.

The friction shell is open at its front end 22 and closed at its rear end 23 by the member 24, which is preferably integral with the friction shell 21,

The shell is externally provided at its rear end with the recess 25, the walls forming said recess providing inside the shell the boss 26 around which the outer spring 27 is seated against the rear inner face 28 of the' friction shell, the boss being) provided at its inner end with the seat 29 for the inner spring 30. The member 24 at the rear end of the shell 21 is hollow about the boss 26, thus permitting the spring 27 to be of exceptional length.
The wedge 34 is provided with the recess 41 to receive the head 42 of the connecting rod 43, which passes through the opening 44 in-the wedge, rearwardly through the openings 45 in the center of the disks 39, 39, and the opening 46 in `the rear central portion of the shell into the recess 25, which is of suitable dimensions to receive the nut 47. In normal position the parts within the friction shell are in the relative positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The disks 39, 39 are of suitable strength so that upon the compression of the gear the said disks and the springs 30 and 27 are fully compressed, and the rear disk is in engagement with the shoulder 40 of the shell before the said disks are in a position resistance'afforded by the frictional engagement of the friction shoes with the internal friction face of the shell there is added the l resistance of the disks 39, which are compressed between the shoulder 40 and the rear ends 38 of the friction shoes, affording a high compression resisting capacity to the draft gear.
I claim l'. In a railway draft rigging, a compression resisting member comprising a friction shell, .a wedge, friction shoes, springs and resilient disks within the shell, the shell being provided with an internal shoulder between which and the rear end of the friction shoes the resilient disks are compressed upon the full compression of the spring.

In arailway draft rigging, a compression resisting device comprising a friction shell provided with an internal annular shoulder in front of which the shell is of a larger internal diameter than back of the said shoulder, and a wedge, friction shoes, springs and resilient disks within the friction shell, the springs being seated at their rear end against the internal rear face of the friction shell, and at their: forward end against the said disks, the disks being between the rear end of the friction shoes and the said springs, andbeing capable of fullsion resisting member comprising a shell, friction mechanism, friction shoes and springs within the shell, a resilient member interposed between said springs and friction mechanism, said shell being provided with a seat between which and the friction shoes the said resilient member is engaged and adaptedto be compressed.
