Application med Biebruary 23 191e. Serial No. 321,667.
To all whom. 'it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN F, Cpnnoiz, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Bung Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto improvements in buiiing mechanism. I
An object of the invention is to provide a buing mechanism for railway passenger cars and other vehicles having a preliminary spring action and a final combined spring and frictional action, the preliminary compression spring also acting simultaneously with the frictional resisting mechanism.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a buiing mechanism in which two sets of combined springs and frictional shock absorbing devices are twin arranged; in which the twin friction shells are made separate and detachable and in which'the'capacity of the buiiing mechanism is very high.
The invention furthermore consists in the improvements in the parts and devices and in the novel combinations of the parts and devices herein shown, described or claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a horizontal, sectional view of a bufling mechanism embodying my improvements and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical, sectional views taken respectively on the lines 2-2 and 3 3 of Fig. 1.
ln said drawing, the bufling mechanism is shown as comprising a rear plate 10 which abuts across sill or any other fixed part 11 of the car underframe. Mounted on the plate 10 in twin arrangement are two cylindrical, combined friction shells and spring casings 12, each of which is detachable with` respect to the plate 10 and centered in position thereon by means of bosses 13 formed integral with said plate. Within each combined shell and casing 12 are mounted a plurality of circularly arranged friction shoes 14, a wedge or spreader 15, nested main springs 16 and a retaining bolt 0r rod 17, the latter extending through the wedge 15 at the inner end. Telescoped on the friction shells 12, 12 is a casing 18 having two cylindrical portions 19 united by a central web 20, the latter being slotted, as at 21, rto receive a key 22 therethrough, which key engages shoulders 23 formed on the inner sides of the yfriction shells 12, the key 22 preventing the separation of the member 18 and the shells 12 which would otherwise occur because of the springs r2li which are placed around the shells 12 and engage the real? @nds 25 of the member 18. At its front end, the member 18` is provided with forwardly extending triangular shaped portions 26 connected by a bridge portion 27 against which the rear end 28 of the bilder stem is adapted to press to operate the buding mechanism. The key 22 is prevented from falling out by cotters 29, 29.
From the preceding description it will be seen that during the first part of the operation of the buiiing mechanism, the preliminary compression springs 24 resist inward movement of the member 18. After the latter has been moved sufficiently for the same to engage the outer ends of the wedges 15, the twin arranged friction shock absorbing devices are brought into play, and at the same time it will be noted that the springs 24 assist the friction shock absorbing devices in dissipating the shock. By forming the combined shells and casing 12 separately and detachable, the same may be easily renewed or repaired and injury to one does not necessitate replacement of the other, thus minimizing the cost of renewals and repairs. y
Although l have herein shown and described what l now consider the preferred embodiment of my improvements, yet it will be understood that various changes and modilications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, and all such changes and modiiications are contemplated as come within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
l claim 1. A buiiing mechanism including, in combination: two sets of twin arranged telescoped casings; springs normally tending to separate said casings; and a key in engagement with all of said casings and preventing separation thereof, substantially as specified.
2` In a shock absorbing device of the character described, in combination: a plate having a pair of integral bosses formed thereon; twin arranged combined friction shells and spring casings mounted on said plate, each of said combined shells and casings having a perforated inner end itting over one of said bosses; springs and friction mechanism within each of said friction shells and casings; `a connecting bolt eX- tending through each friction mechanism and the corresponding boss; and a member for engaging and operating said friction mechanism, substantially as specied.
8. In a device of the character described, in combination: a pair of separable friction shells arranged in twin; friction mechanism and springs within each of said shells; and
a member telescoped over bothof said shells,
said member having twin arranged portions corresponding in shape and size to the shape and size of the shells and thereby assisting in maintaining said shell in proper position, substantially as specified.
