The relation of the pawl and ratchet with the presserfoot lever is such 4as to prevent movement of the presserfoot .away from the work rest.
Suitable means is provided for holding the pawl normally in engagement with the ratchet and vfor disengaging the paWl therefrom. According to the present invention this may be done in three ways. First by actuation of a handle 38, second, by means of a cam 39 mounted upon the shaft 11, and third, by means of manually reversing the 'direction of movement of the cam shaft.
The pavvl 36 is formed on one end of a member which is mounted upon two pivots 40 and 41. The pivot 40 is carried by a plunger 42 arranged so as to slide in guides formed on the lever 18. The pivot 41 connects the pawl member with one end of a rod 44 of which the other end is pivotally connected to the handle 38. A spring 45 connected tothe rod 44 and to the plunger 42 exerts its tension so as to hold the paWl normally in engagement with the ratchet. Whenthe handle 38 is moved tothe rear against the tension of the spring 45, it rst disengages the pawl from the ratchet and then engages a pin 46 on the lever 18 (see Fig. l) and by furtherl movement oscillates the lever about its fulcrum 19 thus retracting the presserfoot. The plunger 42 is provided with an ear 47 against which a spring 48 contained in a socket in the lever 18 exerts its tension for the purpose of pressing the point of the pawl toward the ratchet. Means-is provided, however, for automatically retracting the plunger 42 so as to disengage the pawl .from the ratchet prior to the feeding movement of the carriage 25. When the various parts are moved tothe positions described, the work is entirely free and may be readily removed So that the needle thread a may be conveniently severed.v v Having thus explained the nature of my said invention and described a Way of constructing andusing the same, although without attempting to set forth .all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, declare that what l claim is 1. In a machine' of the character described, a presserfoot carrier, a hand lever, said carrier being arranged to be movable independently of said hand lever and said hand lever being arranged to be movable independently of said presser-foot carrier, means arranged to lock said presserfo'ot carrier, and means arranged to be operated by said hand lever to move said locking means to unlock said carrier, said carrier having` an abutment arranged to be engaged by said hand lever to retract ysaid carrier.

In a machine of the character described, a shaft, a work support, a presserfoot, a carrier for said presser'oot, a spring arranged tocause said presserfoot to coact with saidavorlt support, means arrai'iged to l.loc-lv: said carrier, driven means arranged to act upon said locking means periodically to unlock said carrier when said machine is operating, a .rotary driven member, a movable member arranged tobe moved by said rotary driven member when said shaft is turned opposite to its operating direction,v
and means arranged to transnnt such movement'from said movable member to impart unlocking movement to said locking means and to impart ret-ractory movement to said carrier, said movable member being inefvfectual to operate said transmittingdmeans when said shaft is turning in said operating direction.

In a machine of the character referred to, complemental stitch-forming mechanism, a pressert'oot, a pressrloot-lever` a fulcrum for said lever, a stationary ratchet, springpressed pawl on said presserioot-lever for normally engaging said ratchet, 'automatic v engage said abutment means for periodically disengagng said paWl from said ratchet, and a thread-clamp in combination with .means on the main shaft for simultaneously unlocking and lifting the presserfoot and unlocking the thread-clamp upon a reverse movement of said shaft.

In a machine of the character de scribed, a presserfoot and lever therefor, a fulerum for said lever, normally coacting members for locking said lever, an abutment on said lever, a hand lever mounted on said fulcrum independently of said presserfoot lever, said hand lever being adapted to to move said presserfoot lever, and means operable by said hand lever for actuatingone of said locking members to unlock saidV presserfoot lever.

In a machine .of the character referred to, a shaft, stitch-forming mechanism driven thereby, a presserfoot, a presserfoot carrier, a fulcrum for said carrier, normally coacting ratchet and pawl members of which one is mounted on said carrier and the other on a fixture, and automatic means for periodically disengaging one of said coacting members from the other to unlock said carrier; in combination with a rotatable member having an operating surface, said member being driven by said shaft, andmeans adapted to be actuated by said surface, when the shaft is reversely rotated, to disengage one of said coacting locking members from the other and retract said presserfoot carrier. y

In a machine of the character referred to, a shaft, stitelrforming mechanism driven thereby, a presserfoot, a presserfoot carrier, a fulcrum for said carrier, coacting ratchet and p'afwl members for locking said carrier, one of said locking members being mounted on said carrier and the other on a fixture, and one of them being spring-pressed into engagement with the other, automatic means for periodically disengaging one of said locking members from the other, and a thread clamp; in combination with means operative by reverse movement of said shaft for opening` said thread clamp, and means likewise operative by said shaft for disenga ging one of said locking members from the other and retractng said presserfoot carrier simultaneously with the aforesai action of said thread clamp.

A sewing machine having, in combination, a. rotary presserfoot structure, a spring arranged to act on said presser-foot structure to press the latter against the work, a pivoted member arranged to coact with said operating member, .a spring arranged to hold said pivoted member in position to coact with said operatingmember, said pivoted member being arranged to receive angular' movement about with said presser-foot,
operating member,a movableits ivot from said operating member when the atter is rotating in one direction, and to receive bodily movement from said operating member when the latter is rotating in the reverse direction, and means arranged to transmit such bodily movement of said pivoted member to said presserfoot structure to retract the latter.

Asewing machine having, .incombination', a drivmg'shaft, a work support, an arm bearing a'presser foot for holding the Work against thework support', `and means for moving the presser foot away 'from the work support inactive during the normal operation ofthe machine but acting when the machine .is turned backward including a link extending directly between the presser' foot arm and the driving shaft and reciprocated by the driving shaft only when it is rotated in the reverse direction.

In a sole-sewing machine, the combination with a drive shaft, a Work support, and a movable presser-foot, of a pivoted member, means connecting said pivoted member and operating means on said shaft constructed and arranged to move said pivoted member endwise upon reversal of said shaft, said connecting means being arranged to transmit such endwise movement to raisel said presser foot.
10. In a sole-sewing machine, the combination with a drive shaft, a work support, and a movable presser foot, of an arm pivoted on said presser-foot, and operating means on said shaft constructed and'arranged to 100 move said arm endwise upon reversal of said shaft to raise said presser-foot, said operating means swinging said arm on its pivot during the normal rotation of said shaft.

In a machine of the character described, a shaft, stitch-forming mechanism arranged to be operated by said shaft when rotating in one direction, a Work rest, a Work-engaging member arranged to coact with said work rest to clamp the work, and means arranged to be operated by said shaft when rotated in the reverse direction to retract said work-engaging member, said retracting means being arranged to be ineffeetive 'for the purposestated when said 4shaft is rotated in the first-mentioned dif .worloengaging member arranged to coact with .said work rest to clamp the work,
