LIFI'ING-JACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1315.
Application fi1ed July 23, 1914. Serial No. 852,556.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDRIK OLSON, a citi- Zen of Norway, residing at Stony Butte, in the county of Dawson and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lifting jacks and more particularly to a device of this class adapted primarily for raising fenceposts, and the like, out of the ground, and its object is to produce a device of this class that is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, durable and eflicient in operation.
Another object is to produce a device of this class so constructed that the gripping jaws will instantaneously adjust themselves to the load to be raised when pressure is applied to the hand lever or handle.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the fulcrum.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 designates the fulcrum block which is bifurcated at one extremity to form prongs 2, 2 which are separated by a V-shaped opening.
3 and A are the lifting jaws pivotally connected by a bolt 5, the jaw 3 terminating in the hand lever or handle 6 by which the device is operated. Each jaw 3, i is formed with a pair of cars 7, 7 and in each pair of cars a roller 8 is disposed which lies parallel with the adjacent portion of the jaw 3 or 4. To the end of each jaw 3, 4 a toothed grip-- ping jaw 9 is pivotally secured, the teeth 10 of each jaw being adapted to bite into the object to be raised to obtain a secure purchase thereupon.
In operation the jaws 3, 4 are placed into the fulcrum block, the rollers 8, 8 coming in contact with the prongs 2, 2 of that block. Pressure upon the handle 6 will force the rollers toward each other thus pressing the jaws 3, 4; toward each other and causing the gripping jaws to firmly and instantaneously grip the object to be raised. As the jaws 3, 4 swing upon the rollers S, 8, as a pivot, the object will be raised out of or above the ground.
What is claimed is 1. A lifting jack comprising a fulcrum block, lifting jaws pivoted together, one of said aws terminating in a handle, gripping jaws pivotally carried by said lifting jaws and means carried oy said lifting jaws for frictional engagement with said fulcrum block whereby said last named jaws may be forced toward each other to cause said gripping jaws to engage an object.
2. A lifting jack comprising a fulcrum block, lifting jaws pivoted together, one of said aws terminating in a handle, gripping jaws pivotally carried by said lifting jaws, a pair of ears carried by each of said lifting jaws, and a rollercarried by each pair of said ears for frictional engagement with said fulcrum block to pivotally support said lifting aws.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDRIK OLSON.
