YOKE FOR CATTLE.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1915.
Application filed March 6, 1914. Serial No. 822,936.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY RAY KNOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Limon, in the county of Lincoln and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Yokes for Cattle, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to animal pokes, and more particularly to the class of yokes for cattle.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a yoke of this character wherein the extensions or arms at the top and bottom thereof carry hooks which are of a par ticular shape to prevent the animal from getting through or over a fence irrespective of the direction of movement of its head.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a yoke of this character wherein the same is constructed in a novel manner to enable the quick and easy application thereof to the neck of the animal or its removal therefrom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a yoke of this character which is so constructed as to inflict slight injury to the animal to make it desist in an attempt to jump over or go through a fence.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a yoke of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in use, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a yoke constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front view showing the yoke open. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the poke comprises a yoke 5, made from a fiat metal bar in one side stretch of which is formed an opening adapted to be closed by means of a swinging sect-ion 6, which is connected to the side stretch of the yoke by means of a pivot 7 to permit the same to be swung to a position for opening or closing the yoke. Integral with and extending from one end of the yoke is the upper arm or extension 8, while swingingly connected to the side stretch of the yoke medially thereof is the fork end 9 of the lower extension or arm 10, the limbs of the fork 9 being supported by means of pivots 11 passed through the side stretches of the said yoke to permit the swinging of the fork 9 and its arm 10.
At the free ends of the limbs of the fork 9 are riveted or otherwise secured substantially L-shaped stop members 12, the same being inturned to lie in the path of the side stretches of the yoke 5 to contact therewith and thereby limit the swinging movement of the fork 9 in one direction.
Riveted or otherwise secured to the swinging section 6 is a bearing plate 13 which is of inverted V-shape and is adapted to rest upon the neck of the animal when the yoke 5 has been placed about the same, the section 6 being formed with an extension 14 adapted to lie parallel with the arm 8, and through which are detachably passed bolt members 15, which are also passed through the arm 8 to fasten the section 6 closed. It is to be understood, however, that the section 6 may be detachably fastened in any suitable manner.
Riveted or otherwise secured at the lower end of the yoke 5 and projecting rearwardly therefrom is a plate 16 formed with a pair of teeth 17 which are adapted to prick the hide of the animal to inflict slight injury should an attempt be made to go through a fence, and this is effected on the engagement of either of the arms 8 and 10 with the fence structure, and thus in this manner the animal will desist in its attempt to go through the fence.
At the outer free ends of the extensions or arms 8 and 10 are outwardly divergent and inwardly curved fingers or tines 18 which are directed rearwardly at an angle with respect to the said extensions or arms and form hooks to engage with the wires or rails of the fence structure irrespective of the direction of movement of the head and neck of the animal so as to make it impossible for the animal to work the poke through the fence.
Spaced from the hooks on the upper extension or arm 8 is a rearwardly directed finger 19 which coacts with the fingers or causing the animal to retreat from the said fence structure.
From the foregoing it is thought that *the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:-
1. A poke comprising a neck yoke member, a fork member swingingly connected to the neck yoke member, the said vneckyoke member being formed with a substantially hexagonal shaped frame providing parallel side stretches and oppositely tapered ends, an extension formed atone end of the frame and ,having a hook-like laterally deflected terminal, the portion of the frame next to the extension thereon being in the form of a hinged section for opening and closing the yoke member, detachable means passed through the said extension and engaged in the swinging section to fasten the same closed, .an extension formed on the fork member and having a hook-shaped laterally deflected terminal, means on the fork for engaging theyoke to limit the swinging relation thereof, a-spur at the crotch of the fork, and a toothed plate mounted on the end of the frame opposite the extension.
2. A pokecomprising a neck yoke mem- 7 ber, a fork member swingingly connected to ile neckyoke member, the said neck yoke.
member being formed with a substantially hexagonal Shaped frame providing parallel side stretches and oppositely tapered ends, an extension formedatone end of the frame and having a hook-like laterally deflected terminal, the portion of the frame next to "the extension thereon being in the form of a hinged section for opening and closlng :the yoke member, detachable means passed through the said extension and engaged in the swinging section :to fasten the same closed, an extension formed on the for]: member and having a hook-shaped laterally deflected terminal, means on the fork for engaging the yoke to limit the swinging relation thereof, a spur at the crotch of the fork, a toothed plate mounted on the end of the frame opposite the extension, and tines fixed to the said extensions and having hook portions reversely laterally curved with re spect to the hook terminais of said ext-en- 'Sl-OHS.
Intestimony whereof I affix signature 7 presence of two wrtnesses.
