I provide a pilot or indicator, in this case shown as a lamp L This lamp serves to indicate the condition of the lamps L, as, should any of them be inoperative, the change in brilliancy of the filament of the gilot lamp will indicate the same. The relay 2 also controls the police signaling circuit to interrupt the same when the source B is connected with the lamps. At R I show a relay in circuit with the source X and which controls a switch in the circuit of relay B. As long as the receivers at the substations are upon the hooks interrupting the telephone bridges thereat, the resistance in the circuit of the source X is sufiicient to prevent the energization of the relay R. As soon, however, as a call is responded to at a substation by removing the receiver from the hook, or otherwise lowering the resistance of the circuit of the source X, the current flow in said circuit is sufficient to operate the relay R The switch in the circuit of R is opened and the relays R and B deenergized which interrupts the circuit of the relays R and the lamps L. It will thus be seen that the current from the source X passes instantaneously through the telephone instruments. at the substations. I do not wish to be limited to this form of automatically interrupting the lamp circuit when the called station responds, but may use any other means within the purview of the claims. The apparatus and the ,functions thereof which are contemplated by my invention, can be best understood by a descrip tion of the operation.
The operation is as follows: Should a policeman desire to call. a main station to communicate with the chief of police or other person. thereat over the telephone, he removes his receiver from the hook H which engages contact 5, closing the circuit as follows: from ground G at the main station--through battery B-relay Rconductor 6-switch 7 8 conductor 9-switch -101lconductor 1-substation bridge including the switch hook H, receiver'S and transmitter T the other" side of line 2-the switch 12-13- conductor 14-switch l5-l6toz;ground at G". The relay R pulls up its armature 17 closing the switch 17-18 and" a circuit through battery 13-19 and the lamp L The attendant noticing the illumination of I lamp L operates key K bridging her set M on through the switches 8-20, '1521. attendant then communicates with the 'patrolman over the mains 1 and 2, current being supplied from the source B. At the termination of the conversation the key K is thrown back and the receiver returnedto .the hook interrupting the circuits and rewhich may be lamps inclosed in the police boxes, adapted, when illuminated, to disperse light through the lenses in the sides of the boxes, the operator throws the key K, closing the loll-owing circuit: ground G switch 303l-----conductor 32-relay R battery B"--ground G This operates the relay R which pulls down its armatures 11, 12 and 33, closing a locking circuit through itself .as follows': ground G"key K switch 34--35-conductor 36'relay R switch 3633-relay Rbattery B ground G- The relay R also closes switches 11-37 and 12-38 connecting the source of current X in circuit with the 'relays R the latter being energized over the following: from Xthrough switch 38-12- over co du'ctor 2-'through the relays R the conrensers F at the substations--the conductor l--switch 11-'37-39-relay B back to X. The relays R are energized, at-
tracting their armatures :10 and closing the switches 40-4-1 in the signal circuits at the substations. The relay R is not-energized, owing to the high resistance of the relays R The relay R is energized pullin up its armatures 23 and 4-2, breaking the police signaling circuit at 23--24 and closing the switches 23- 13 and E ll. Owing to the low resistance of this bridge, the flow of'c'urrent in the circuit of the-source X is sufiicient to energize the relay R which attracts its armature 35, opening the switch ti l--35 and breaking the circuit of the relays R and R* which are deenergized, releasing their armatures a 1 connecting the signal ecntreliing and the signal operating source B thus extinguishing the signal. At K I show a manually operated. key by which the system may be restored should the patrolman fail to respond.
In Fig. 2 I show a normally closed circuit police signaling system operating over the conductor 3 and ground return. An additional armature 60 is shown, controlled by relay R to operate the switch 60-61, closing a second circuit through the relay R maintaining the energization thereof during the signaling interval.
In Fig. 3 I show a second modification. In this case the signals L at the substations are shown normally connected from the conductor 2 to the conductor 3. The control of these signals is limited to the appara tus at the main station, the bridges being normally closed. When the subscriber rcsponds, a circuit through relay R is completed over which this relay is energized to interrupt the circuit of relay R The character and functions of the apparatus and the operation of the system of these modifications will be so clear from the description of the preferred form that I will not describe them further.
It will thus be seen that I show signals at the substations, consisting of lamps or other similar devices which are adapted to be operated and controlled over the conductors of the composite system, the circuits both for the operating and controlling means being governed by the attendant at the main station. I have also shown a means for automatically governing these arrangements when response is made at one of the-substations.
\Vhile I have shown only these concrete examples of my invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art, that numerous and extensive departures from the forms and details of the apparatus here shown may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, the same being herein shown solely for the purpose of clearly illustrating these embodiments.
I claim:
1. In a compositesystem, including a combined police and telephone system, the combination of a main station, a plurality of substations, police signaling devices at said stations, telephones at the substations, a plurality of conductors utilized by said devices connecting said stations, a telephone circuit operating over a pair of said conductors, lamp signals adapted to be connected in and operated over certain of said conductors, a source of current adapted to be connected with the conductors to which the lamps may be connected for operating all of said lamps simultaneously and means at the substations controlling the operation of said lamps, said controlling means connected in circuit at said substations with said telephone conductors and adapted to be controlled thereover by a separate source of current located at the main station.
2. In a composite system, including a combined police and telephone, system, the combination of a main station, a' plurality of substations, police signaling devices at said stations, telephones at the substations, a plurality of conductors utilized by said devices connecting said stations, a telephone circuit operating over a pair of said conductors, lamp signals at said substations adapted to be connected in and operated over certain of said conductors, a source of current adapted to be connected with the conductors to which the lamps may be connected for operating all said lamps simultaneously and relays at the substations controlling the operation of said lamps, said controlling relays connected in circuit with'said telephone conductors and adapted to be controlled thereover by a separate source of current located at the main station.
3. In a composite system consisting of a combined police and telephone system, a main station and a plurality of substations, a plurality of conductors connecting said stations, a telephone circuit consisting of two of said conductors, a police signaling system utilizing a conductor independent of said telephone conductors and ground, a luminous signal at each substation adapted to be connected in circuit with one of said two of said conductors, a police signaling system utilizing a conductor independent of said telephone conductors and ground, a luminous signal at each substation adapted to be connected in circuit with one of said telephone conductors and said independent conductor, a source of current for operating said lamp over said telephone conductor, a relay controlling the operation of said lamp connected in circuit with said telephone conductors, said relay adapted to be controlled by said main station operator.
5. In 'a composite system consisting of combined telephone and police systems, a main station and a plurality of substations,

In a composite system consisting of combined telephone and police systems, a main station and a plurality of substations, telephones at said stations a plurality of conductors connecting said stations, a telephone line utilizing two of said conductors, a police system utilizing a conductor independent of said telephone conductors, luminous signals at the substations adapted to be connected in circuit with one of said telephone conductors and said independent conductor, a source of current for operating said signals and relays for controlling the operation of said signals, said relays operated over the telephone conductors by a separate source of current located at the main station.
In a composite system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station and a plurality of substations, a plurality of conductors connecting said stations, a telephone line utilizing two of said conductors, a police line utilizing a conductor additional to said telephone conductors, police line apparatus operating over said conductors, lamps at said substations adapted to be connectedin circuit with one of said telephone conductors and said additional police line conductor, a source of current for operating said lamp over said circuit and an independent source of current for operating said police line apparatus.

In a composite system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the c mbination of a main station and a pluralityof substations, a plurality of conductors connecting said stations, a telephone line utilizing two of said conductors, a police line utilizing a conductor independent of saidtclephone conductors and ground, lamps at said substations adapted to be connected in circuit with one of said telephone conductors and said police line conductor independent thereof, and a source of current for operating said lamp .over said circuit, said circuit controlled from the main station.

In a composite system, consisting of a combined police and telephone system, the combination of a main station, a plurality of substations, signaling devices at said stations, a plurality of conductors utilized by said devices ,connecting said stations, lamp signals adapted to be operated over a circuit utilizing certain of saidconductors, a source of current for operating all said signals simultaneously, means controlling the connection of said signals to said conductors and a source of current for said controlling means, said sources adapt d to produce currents of distinctive characteiitics.

In a compositeielectric system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, a main station and a plurality of substations, conductors for connecting said stations, lamp signals at said substations operated over a circuit utilizing certain of said conductors, a source of current for operating all said signals simultaneously, and means irresponsi've to current of the character generated by said source, controlling said lamp circuit.

In a composite electric system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, a main station and a plurality of substations, conductors for connecting said stations, lamp signals at said substations operated over a circuit utilizing certain of said conductors, a source of current for said signals, and relays connected in circuit with two of said conductors irresponsive to current of the character generated by said source, controlling said lamp circuit.

In a composite system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station, a plurality of substations, signaling devices at said stations, a plurality of conductors utilized by said devices connecting said stations, lamp signals at said substations adapted to be connected in circuit with certain of said conductors, a source of current for operating said signals over said lamp circuit, the connection of said source to said circuit being jointly controlled by electromagnetic means at the main station and a relay device located at the substations.

In a composite electric system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station and a plurality of substations, conductors connecting said stations, one of said conductors utilized for the transmission of telephonic currents, a second of said conductors used for the transmission of police signal currents, lamp signals at said substations adapted to be operated over said two conductors, a source of current for operating said signals, means at the central station for connecting said source in said circuit, and means for interrupting the circuit of the police signaling system when said 'flil'CG is connected in circuit with said signals.

In a composite electric system consisting of a rombined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station and a plurality of substations, conductors connecting said stations, one of said conductors utilized for the transmission of telephonic currents, a second of said conductors used for the transmission of police signal currents, lamp signals at said substations adapted to be operated over said two conductors, a source of current for operating said signals, means at the central station for connecting said source in said circuit and automatic means for interrupting the circuit of the police signaling system when said source is connected in circuit with said signals,

In a composite electric system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station and a plurality of substations, a plurality of conductors connecting said stations, lamp signals at said stations adapted to be operated over a circuit utilizing certain of said conductors, a source of current, means for connecting said source in said ,circuit, a police signaling apparatus operating over certain, 'of said conductors, said gonne'cting means operating to interrupt the conductors of said police signaling apparatus when said source is connected in circuit with said signals.

In a composite system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station and a plurality of substations, conductors connecting said stations, signals at said stations, a source of current, means at the main station for operatirely connecting said source in circuit with the signals, police signal sending apparatus at said substations, signal receiving apparatus at the main station, said connecting means adapted to interrupt the circuit connecting the police signal sending and receiving means and to complete a second circuitthrough signal receiving means when said source is connected with said signals.

In a composite electric system consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station and a plurality of substations, lamp signals at said substations, means at the main station controlling the operation of said signals, police signal sending apparatus at the substations, police signal receiving apparatus at the main station, circuit connections joining said nection through said signal receiving apparatus when said lamp signals are operated.

Ina composite system, consisting of a combined telephone and police system, the combination of a main station, a plurality of substations, conductors connectingsaid stations, lamp signals-at said stations adapted all to -be operated simultaneously over conductors of said system, a source of current at the main station for operating said lamp signals, means at the main station for connecting said source of current to said conductors, other means at the substations for controlling the connection of said signals in circuit with said conductors, a separate source of current operative simultaneously with said first named source of current to operate said other means and means for automatically retiring said signals when response is made at the called station.

In a composite system, consisting of a combined police and telephone system, the combination of a main station and a plurality of substations, conductors connecting saidstations, a telephone line over two of said conductors, a police signaling system over certain of said conductors, lamp signals at said substations connected between one of the telephone conductors and a police signal circuit conductor, a source of current to op erate said lamp signals at the main station, a separate source of current also at the main station for operating said police signaling system, and electromagnetic means at the mam station connecting one or the other of said sources of current to the police signal. circuit conductor, and means automatically retiring said lamp signals when response is made at a called substation.
21. In a composite system consisting of a combined police and telephone system, the
' combination of a main station, a plurality of substations, conductors connecting said stations, signaling apparatus at the main station normally connected in circuit with certain of said conductors, lamp signals at the substations adapted to be operated over certain of said conductors, a source of current for operating said lamp and elect-ro-magnetic means for interrupting the normal connections of said lamp conductors and connecting said source in circuit therewith.
