Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed April 21, 1913. Serial No. 32,466.
Be it known that I, ALBERT N. Ea'fbfifof Newburyport, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Screens and Shutters, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifica tion, in explaining itsnature.
My invention relates to a device that may be placed in an open window in the manner of an ordinary screen and perform at all times the usual function of a screen, but
has combined with it a shutter or shutters that may be .used to exclude light and air provide in a device of the above character an arrangement whereby the screen and shutter combined with it, whether shut or open, will effectually close the opening in the window; to provide, also, whereby the screening may be a fixed immovable portion of the device so that ordinary wire screening may be employed unsubjected to any bending or distorting influence whic would quickly tend to break the same; and further to provide whereby the shutter or shutters may when partially closed shut out a relatively large amount of light without materially diminishing the passage of air as in the use of an ordinary blind.
My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in Figure 1- shows the device in front elevation with the shutters closed. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the device with the shutters closed. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is the same as Fig. 3 excepting that the shutters are shown in an open position.
1 represents a frame rectangular in form and adapted to be inserted in a window in the manner of the frame to an ordinary screen. This frame is, also, preferably provided like many screens with extension side pieces 2 slidably connected with the main body of the frame in the customary manner. Fastened to the frame 1 over the opening therein is screening consisting of sections 3 spaced to leave an opening between the edges of adjacent ections or between the edgeof a section hrldi-the frame, as shown at 5. The sections .3 lie in the same plane and can accordingly be applied to the frame in the manner of ordinary screening. I
prefer to employ a number of sections leavfect is obtained by trunnions 8 extending from the ends of the hubs and journaled to turn within the frame. Each hub 6 is of a general cylindrical form, or, in other words, has such form and adaptation that whateverthe turned position of the shutter may be the hub will at alltimes eflectually close the opening within which it lies, thereby cooperating with the screen in entirely closing the opening in the frame.
From the hubs of the shutters contained in the respective openings in the screen there extend slats 9. These slats are offset with relation to the centers of the hubs so that they may close over the sections of screening adjacent the openings in which the various hubs are contained. I prefer that the hubs of the shutters shall eachjbe provided with two slats extending in opposite directions inside and outside the screen and lying in parallel planes each ofiset with relation to the center of the hub so that they may close in reverse directions on to the inner and outer faces of the screen or sections thereof adjacent the openings or on to the frame as the case may be, substantially as shown in Fig. 3.
In order that all the shutters may be operated simultaneously for either closing the same or for holding the same in an open or partially closed position, they are connected by a bar 10 having pivotal connection with clips 11 secured to the outer edges of the slats on one side of the screen.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A. combined screen and shutter comprising a frame, screening applied thereto in spaced sections lying in the same plane with an opening between the sections, a shutter having a hub mounted to turn within said opening on an axis lying within the plane of said sections, said hub having slats extending therefrom in reverse directions and lying in parallel planes offset with relation to the center of said hub whereby said slats may occupy an open position or close having also slats extending therefrom ofi- 10 against said sections. set with relation to the centers thereof .2. A combined screen or shutter c0mpris= whereby said slats may occupy open posiing a frame, screening applied thereto in tions or close against said sections. 5 several spaced sections lying in the same i plane With an opening between adjacent ALBERT EATON sections, shutters having hubs mounted to Witnesses: 4 turn within said openings on axes lying EDWARD E. CRAWSHAW, within the plane of said sections, said hubs ARTHUR WrrmNG'roN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents Washington, D. 0.
