Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented nay a, rare.
application mea November 1o, 19m. serial no. 591,630.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ANTONIO RArMoNDI, merchant, subject of the King of Italy, residing at No. 4 Via San Vicenzino, Milan, in theKingdom of ltaly, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Packings, of which the following is a specification. l
@ne of the most used forms of packings for rendering the joints of water, gas, air and steam pipesor boxes tight, is the packing of metal gauze and red lea-d, .manganese or other cement. j
The' sheets of metal gauze, cut in shape of circular rings or in rectangular form, according to the contour of the flanges, whose joints are to be distorted or buckled stresses they are subject fitted to the flanges of the pipe joints, steam boxes and the like. rl`his is the rea-- outer edges of the metal gauze packing sometimes project outside the face of the 4flanges with which they should be flush, or, what is still worse, the inner edges partly obstruct the path of the water, steam or gas,'by their projecting inwardly on one side or the other, owing to their` having been unequally distended during the maklng of the joint. l The object of the present invention is to remove the above inconveniences by supplying a substitute for the metal gauze, which is easy to be handled and, not being liable to distortion, secures an exact adjustment of the packing to the faces of the anges, which are to be 'made water, steam or gas tight.
According to my invention the circular rings or rectangular frames on which the red-lead, manganese or other cement is laid, do not longer consist of metal gauze, but instead thereof, thin metal plates are resorted to, suiting the form of the flanges and prorffided with small holes all over their surace.
ll usually employ iron sheets of 0.1-0.2 make the holes circular l mm. diameter and 2 mm. distance from center to center, but l do not intend to confine myself to any of the above data, as the thickness of the vsheets or plates, the size, shape and number of the holes may vary within very wide limits.'V Moreover in `order to secure the exact fitting of said metal sheets or plates to the anges of the line of to, 'while being made tight, are liable to getowing to the unequal pipes, which is by no'means an easy matter,
especially in the case of packings having to vbe changed along a complete range of plpes already at work, without removing any of the plpes, I' provide two handles at the end ofthe same diameter or line of symmetry of each plate and trace a straight line along said diameter or line of symmetry.
The rings, fitted with such handles, can be most easily mounted in absolutely con centrrcal posltion wlth respect to the flanges,
as it is only necessary to that edect to olo serve the. ends of the two handles and ,cause them to project equal distances on both sides and therefore to be equidistant from the center of the pipe.
In some cases each of the plates may be fitted with more than two handles.
ln the `accompanying drawing Figure l represents a plan view of a packing plate made accordlng to my invention, and Fig.
2, a sectlo'nal vlew on a reduced scale of two pipesections joined and provided with the packing plate.
-ais the annular ring, -bare the A'B is a straight line traced on the plate and passing through the center of the ring.
. From Fig. .Qit will be noted that, to form the joint, the annular plate a is interposed between the flanges d .of the pipe-sections D, D and in direct contact with the opposed surfaces of said flanges, the fluid joint being then made by tightening the screw-bolts e in the usual way. lnemploying a foraminated thin flat plate for packing, under my invention the very important advantage is obtained over wire gauze packings, which must be embedded vin a'layer offpa'cking cement or composition, that such 'cement or composition, which may be red lead or 'manganesa is not to be used as lthe packingl medium, but need be applied simply at ose points of the packing plates where hollows or uneven surfaces occur in the pipe joints. Therefore, while,v wheinusing the wire gauze packing the cement or other composition forms the packing and the wire gauze which is embedded therein acts simply as a carrier therefor, under my invention the thin plate forms substantially the packing proper and requires only an insignificant amount of cement to completely fill the hollows or Haws which may occur in the pipe-joint flanges.
Having described my invention and how the same is to be carried out, what I claim is:
1. A- joint packing for pipes and inclosures, comprising al flat thin foraminated hard metal pla v 2. A. joint packing for pipes and .inclosures, comprising a thin fiat hard metal plate provided over its surface with minute closely adjacent perforations.
3. A joint packing for pipes and inclosures, which comprises a flat thin foraminated hard metal plate, -providedwitll handles arranged at opposite points.
4. In' a joint packing, the combination of two pipe joints provided with flanges adjacent to one another, in combination with an interposed packing comprising a foraminated thin flat hard sheet metal plate, and means for holding the flanges together.
In testimony whereof I ax my signature in presence of two witnesses.
