FRANK E. PIXLEY, OB ST. RAUL, MINNESOTA.
- CAR-BODY.
1 Application filed June 26, 1914. Serial No. 847,383.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK E. PIXLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at 922%} Selby avenue, St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car- Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to minimize the crushing effect in cars, in the event of a sudden blow or impact as in a collision, and thus reduce fatalities in railway wrecks.
To this end my invention consists in mounting a car body on an underframing, so that in case of the sudden impact of collision, the car body will shift its position and swing laterally on the underframing, and thus minimize the blow or impact upon the car body and its occupants.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view representing the outline of the car body and underframing, which is adapted to sup port the car body; Fig. 2 is a section on the line XX of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a. detail, showing the portions of two adjacent coaches which are shown in outline in Fig. 1, and Fig. t is a section on line YY of Fig. 1, illustrating the construction of the guide below an end of thecar body,
and of the frangible pin.
In the drawing, the car body A is illustrated with a floor 2 and an end telescopic vestibule 3, which is adapted to be connected to an adjacent telescopic vestibule 1 on the end .of an adjoining car body such as 5. The adjacent ends of said telescopic vestibules are inclined at an oblique angle to a longitudinal center line through the car bodies, whereby adjacent car bodies may move freely apart laterally at their ends in case of a collision. The car body such as A is provided with a downwardly extending and centrally disposed king pin 6, which is secured to the floor 2 such as by rivets 7 passing through a flange 8, which is formed integral with the shank of the king pin. This king pin passes downwardly between the adjacent faces 9 of a pair of parallel channel plates 10, which are secured to the lower surface of a horizontal plate 11, and form a guide channel which may also be formed by any suitable construction. The plate 11 extends over the area of the top underframing B, which is carried upon the trucks 12 in the usual manner, said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 4, 1915.
underframing and trucks being formed as a unit and the car body as a separate unit, said units being joined by the king pin, so that the car body may slide longitudinally between the channel plates 10 on the underframing, and swing on the pin laterally in case of a blow or impact as in a wreck. The king pin 6 is provided with a removable fastener 13, which is secured thereto, such as by bolts 14 over the lower surfaces of the ohannel plates. The car body is held on the underframing, so that said parts will maintain their normal relation under a direct pull or push by means of'a frangible stop C, which is in the form of a pin made of wood or other suitable frangible material, passing downwardly through the floor of the car body and the plate 11 of the underframing. In order to swing the car body on its king pin laterally in case of a sudden'blow or impact as in a railway wreck a guide 15 is mounted on the underside of floor 2 of the car body near its end, and depends into a channel 16 formed in said floor. The channel 16 has two branches extending diagonally from one side of the longitudinal center line of the car body, one branch being directed forwardly and the other rearwardly, whereby in case of a sudden longitudinal impact against the car body or underframing sufficient to break the frangible stop C, the guide 15 will follow in the channel groove 16, either in a forward or backward direction, according to which end of the body or framing the force is delivered and thus slide and swing the car body on its pivot 6 longitudinally and laterally, and minimize the j ar upon the car body and its occupants.
The length of the channel formed by the channel plates 10 is sufficient to allow the car body to swing with its guide 15 to one side away from the guide channel 16, whereupon the car body and the underframing will continue to slide longitudinally apart, bearing surfaces 18 in the form of strips secured to the floor of the body such as by bolts 19 being provided for imparting an even motion to the car body when it moves upon the underframing. The ends of the channel formed by the channel plates 10 are closed by plates 20 which serve to limit the longitudinal motion of the car body on the underframing. It will be noted that the frangible stop 0, guide pin 15 and channel 16 for said pin may be duplicated on each end of the car-body and underfnaming, only one end of a car body and ui'iderframing being illustrated in the drawings.
With a car constructedizasidescribdit:is
obvious that upon a sudden impact against either of the ends of the car body or underframing, the body Will be caused to move longitudinally andlaterally upon a diagonal line and also swing about to direct .theiimpact or colliding force away from the car body and the passengers 2qtl-ierein. {This movement vbeing nfacilitated why 7 the ,pre-
