Letters Patent No. 113,830, dated April 18,1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE ROLLERS FOR MOVING HEAVY BODIES.
The Schedule referred. to in these Letters Patent and making part o the same.
To all whom it mfr/y concern.- y
Be it known that I, JOHN RANDERSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a Portable Roller for Moving Heavy Bodies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specioation.
In moving heavy bodies, such as steam-boilers, shafts, spare, blocks of stone, rollers consisting of simple cylinders of wood, without anycarriages or bearers, are employed to roll them on these are objectionable, as each one as soon as the body passes ofi` ithas to be replaced at the front of the body.
The object of this invention is to provide for such purposes a roller which, while portable and easily handied, will not need frequent replacement in moving a body a long distai'ice, but will remain under that porh tion of a body where it may be placed. To this end,
It consists in a roller having at its ends journals iitted tc suitable bearings at the end of a bed-piece, which forms a bearing for the body to be moved, and which is provided with adjustable chocks tha confine the body to be moved in a lateral direction.
In the accompanying drawinglFigure 1 is a perspective view of my roller, showing it applied to a block of stone, which is represented by dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same; and
Figure ,3 is a transverse section thereof.
Siiniiar letters of reference indicate corresponding parte in all the tigures.
'Io enable others skilled in the art te make and use my invention, I willproceed to describe its constri'iction and operation with reference to the drawing.
A is the bed-piece,` preferably made of wood faced and strengthened with met-al, oi' a length correspond ing to thaiJ of the roller B, and of a width somewhat greater' than the diameter thereof', and having its under side recessed to receive the said roller.
This roller is preferably made of wood with iron axles inserted linto its ends, the journals f f of said axles being received in bearings in platesb b secured to the ends of the bed-piece.
The upper face of the bed-piece has formed in it on the upper face of the bed-piece,
t within the groove d in the bed-piece, under the shoulders h h, and slide therein, and the rear portion of each chock is provided with a'holesfor the insertion f` of a pin, D, through it into one of the holes, e e, in the bed-piece to lock the chock in any position:
As in moving very heavy weigh tsa long roller might impinge against the bed-piece and consequently be prevented from turning, .vide the roller into several sections, and in that case should have to furnish the bed-piece with more bearings.
The bed-,piece A is placed under the body to be moved, which is represented in the drawing as being a block of stone, and the chocks O G are then moved up to each side of said body and there locked by the pins I) D, thereby securing the body from any lateral movement.
The body may be drawn by power applied directly to it, or through means of ropes attached to ring-,bolts d d, which are secured in the bed-piece.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ot' the bed-piece A, roller B, and adjustable chocks C C, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
