METHQD QB MAKING U-SHAPED PEPE-BENDS.
Sneeification of Letters Potent.
Poieniseii Meg; e, 3%?115.
Application files. July 8, 1914. serial No. 3493?? a". citizen of the United. States, and. ii resident of Richmond, county of Heni'ico, State of 5 Virginia, have invented n certain new and useful improvement in Methods of Making Ufiimped Pipe-Bends, of which the following is a specification.
My invention concerns the mnkin of U- sinipeil pipe bends end particnlni such bends when used in connection with w snpeyhentel's and generally when exposed in high iempeminres or to ceri'y s'semn or iinid umleipressure. My invention many,-
15 however. he utilized to advantage in making pipe bends of the class reiei're il in even though such pressure and iempewsiure conditions are absent. Various ways of making bends of ihe above character for similar gnn'poses have been proposed.
The present invention comprises a. methofi which. as contrasted with known methods. is oi eziii'enie simplicity, does noi; invoive cizil iools'oi' dies. can be cni'iieii one by poi'sili'eiy nnskilied workmen. end-in wives very liiile WilSiGOf inniienioi.
The oliieci of my invention is iao provide pipe bend of the character specified which may he simply. easily and economicaiiy niennfociin'eii as aforesaid; which shell not insoiiwe zany undue streiching or strain of ni e evils en. any poini.,e.nd which siiziii so wiihsiin'aclhigh presences end ien'i iereeni'es when need under such i gi-iessni'es tiemnenelsnne coniii 'ng in izhe iimn'ings in whichif in-e res-ems n pinn wen" {pe two pipes nniieil, by w pie on i i show espesiively vs eievoiion r i e in f e view swings. ne
.' ini'eniion nnciensetooai end made according its my in X from izhe end as all; 3, the two poriions of the pipe, efiaei the bending, being sn csisniielly pamilei so one another. Each pipe end is then pinned oili' on the side townie which it has been hen'ir. as at i. ilie plane oi this 0 so oration being parallel to the axis of inc pipe. if the bending anti inning have been accurately clone the iwo p ened sides, which now constitute openings into the pipe, may
be accurately shunted, as shown in Fig. i. no They one now welded together in any con- \"enieni way, prefernoiy electrically, and the joined encis of the (two pipes accurately squared as at 5; a hollow cup 6, preferably droirfoi'geii. wiih its lip or edges she eci to so conform Wiih the see of ihe joine pipe ends is now placed upon said ends and the abutting edges weldeiliogeiher. This can is pi'eieinbiy forged so ihe': it is iiiickesi at no centengnniueliy .ihinning ofi until at w its edges ihe ihiclmess is equal to inst of the pipe Woiis.
Referring foo the modificnizion shown in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive each pipe lengili'i', nfirei hsi'ing heel end firsi approximately so squei'edl on, is sonically :Eo shoui. i" iniernei olisnieier in"; iche extreme end. At 9. point 8, as convenient (iisinnce from its end, the i hen given s reverse henol and st s poini 3, isei'e'een 8 and she extreme so end ithe pine is given an offset bend in the w some iicecezon as the reverse bend; the pipe end is planed oii on the side ziowsrcl which ins been hem. on 10, seicl plane being p sliei i sins of pipe. as in so pipe lienol shown in so in as to close the end of each pipe they will,
when Welded together, have their combined end closed Without the aid of the button 11.
The order in which the several bends and the squaring oil of the ends are accomplished is immaterial and practically a matter of convenience.
As will be noted from the preceding description of my improved method, there is practically no material Wasted and no special dies or other tools are necessary. A bend, according to my invention, con be made loy any mechanic reasonably skilled in the art of forging. The thickened cap (5 or solid button 11 provides a maximum of material at a point Where the pipe bend, in
superheater construction as ordinarily pracmake an opening through the pipe Wall,-
abutting the planed edges of the two openings and then Welding them together.
2. The method of making U shaped pipe bonds which comprises displacing an end portion of each of two pipes laterally by i ea so as I heading, planing oil said portion on the side toward which it has been displaced so as to make an opening through the pipe wall, shutting the planed edges of the two openings and Welding them together, and then closing the ends of the joined pipes.
3. The method of making U shaped pipe bonds which comprises displacing an end portion of each of two pipes laterally by giving said portion a reverse bend and also an offset bond between the reverse bend and the end proper of the pipe, swaging down said portion for a short distance from said end proper, planing oil said portion on the side to which it has been displaced so as to make an opening through the pipe Wall, abutting the planed openings of the two pipes and Welding them together, and closing the ends of the joined pipes.
The method of making U shaped pipe hends which comprises dis lacing an end portion of each of two pipes aterally by giving said portion a reverse bend and also an otiset bend between the reverse bend and the end roper of the pipe, swaging down said portion for short distance from said end proper, planing me said portion on the side,
to Which it has been displaced so as to make an opening-through the pipe Wall, abutting -moms.
