To all :whomit may concern: Be 1t known that I, JOHN W. THOMAS, a
Specification of Letters Patent.
citizen of the United States, residing at the ties, second, to prevent the rails from creeping longitudinally, third, to prevent the railsfrom tipping sidewise when "sub.-
' -jee'ted to lateral pressure, such as is exerted byfgear wheel flanges when roundmga curve which assist in holding the rails upon the device from becoming accidentally withdrawn from the underlying ties.
' the accompanying drawing, in which a plan-view of one of the devices.
" tion embodying a ball B, a base (3, and a" will hereinafter appear.
E, which In order that the invent-ion may be fully understood, reference will now be made to Figure 1 is aa cross'section of a rail in position upon'onejof the devices. Fig. 2 is roken vertical section, -enlarged, on line III-III of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end viewof 3 I the device.
' A designates a rail of the usual construcweb D uniting saidball and the base.
- The device consi ituting-the present invention consists of a plate 1 provided'near one side with an abutment 2 and near its opposite side with an overhanging flange 3. Theabutment 2 and the overhangingflange 3 are spaced apart to abut the opposite sides of the rail baseC as disclosed by Fig. 1. The

provided in the plate 1 adjacent the base of the flange 3, to receive spikes G, which, like :he 1e pikes E, are driven into the underlying 11 designatesa set-screw engaging the in:
. ternal threads of the opening, 8 and adapted to bear upon theunderlying portion of the rail' bas'e-Q as disclosed by .Fig. 1.
In practice, the; plate 1 is secured to the underlying the F with the spikes G, the heels the 'overhanging'flange 3 with sufficient friction to prevent said spikes. G from accidentally pulling upward out ofthe. tie,
which is a common occurrence where no means are provided for holding the spikes down in the tie'. The rail. is then placed upon the tie with one side 'of'its base raised upon the bevel surface 4 and the opposite side of said base beneath th'eoverhanging flange 3, un-
.der which it is finally forced home'by applying. sufiicient cause it to slip 0 become flatly seated upon-the platel. The
pressure upon the rail to sideof the rail base 0- bearing against the abutment 2 is then firmly secured in place the bevel. surface 4 andwith the spikes E, which are reliably, held
from working up and'out of'the tie by the '-upper ends of the shouldersfi, which are toward the rail base 0, for a purpose which I Said abutment 2 is interrupted by spike holes 5 to receive spikes are driven .into the underlyingier. r z
6 designates shoulders extend ng upwardly from certain margins ofthe spike holes 5, to abut the .heel of the spikes E as disclosed by Fig. 1. Shoulders 6 are reinforced with ribs 7 extending down to the I plate 1.
The overhanging flange 3 extends the full length of the plate 1 and has a threaded opening 8 at its central port on, where 1t 1s reinforced'with a rib.9. Spike holes 10 are bent over the heels 6 of said spikes E, as disclosed by Fig. 1.: The opposite side of the base is prevented from tipping upward by theoverhanging flange 3, and therail is prevented from creeping longitudinally by the spikes E and the set-screw 11, which latter is screwed down firmly into engagement with the underlying rail base.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: 1. In 'a device of thecharacter' described,
a plate, an abutment on said plateadjacent one side thereof and provided with a bevel upper surface, an overhanging flange on said plate near one margin thereof provided with'a threaded opening, and a setscrew engaging the threads of said opening.
2. In a device of the character described, a plate, an abutment on said platenear one margin thereof, an overhangingflange on said plate near an opposite margin thereof and providedwitha threaded opening, a. reinforcement for said overhanging flange surrounding the threaded opening therein, and a set-screw for engaging the threads of said opening.
In a device of the eharacter described, a plate having spike holes therein, shoulders adjacent certain margins of said spike holes thereof and interrupted by a numberof-the spike holes, an overhanging flange on the plate near an apposite margin thereof, said 10 overhanging flange having. a threaded 0pen-' .ing extending therethrough and a sea-sere w adapted to engage the threads of said opemngnf a M In testimony whereof I afiix my signature,
in thejpresence of twe Witnesses.
