FOLDABLE SCREEN-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 107mm it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM H. CRAW- ronn, citizen of the United States, residing at Rosemond, in the county of Christian and State of Iillinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Screen-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to screen frames of the class arranged to be collapsed when not in use or when stored or shipped, and which may be readily arranged in position when required, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efliciency and utility.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device which will be attached without material structural change to windows, doors or other openings of any size.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
The improved device may be applied without material structural change to screen door frames, screen Window frames, or the like, and it is not desired tolimit the invention in this respect, but for the purpose of illustration the device is shown applied to a conventional window screen frame, and in the drawings thus employed- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a conventional screen frame constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improved frame in collapsed position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail partly in section of portions ofthe frame, illustrating the construction of the locking member, with the screen material and holder re moved from one of the side members. Fig. 4c is a section on the line H of Fig. 3 with the screen material and holders in position on both side members.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved frame comprises the side or stile members 1011, an upper transverse member 12 and a lower transverse member 13, the frame members conforming to the opening to which the device is applied. The
frame members are mitered at their meeting ends as represented at 1 1. At their confronting mitered ends the members 10-12 are hingedly united at their outer edges as represented at 15, while the confronting ends of the members 1113 are likewise hingedly united internally as represented at 16. The confronting mitered ends of the members 1013 and 1112 are hingedly united at their inner edges as shown respectively at 17 and 18. By this means the four members 10111213 may be folded into the position shown in Fig. 2 with the members 1012 in longitudinal alinement and the members 11-12 in longitudinal alinement and, in parallel relation to the members 10-12. The pintle of one of the hinges, for instance that of the hinge 16, is formed removable as indicated at 19, so that the members may be separated for the insertion of the screen material as hereafter explained.
Holding strips 20-212223 are attached to the various frame members and operate to hold the screen material, indicated at 24, upon the frame. The holding strips may be secured in any suitable manner, but preferably by screws or like devices 25, any required number of the fastening devices being employed. The holding strips may also be hingedly united to the frame members as shown at 31 in Fig. 4.
The confronting faces of the side members 1011 are formed with sockets through which pins indicated at 26 are disposed. Extending between the members 1011 is a brace bar 27 bearing at its ends against the side members and provided with hooks 28 29 engaging over the pins. The hoops are preferable slightly diverged away from the brace as shown at'the left in Fig. 3, so that when forced over the pins the members 10-11 and 26 are firmly drawn toward each other and the parts firmly clamped. A holding strip 30 is attached over the portion of the screen material which extends over the brace 27 as shown. By this means the frame is firmly braced and supported and prevented from collapsing while in use.
lVhen it is desired to install the improved device, the frame members 10l1-1213 are arran ed as shown in Fig. 1 and the loose pintfe 19 inserted in the hinge 17 and the brace 27 applied. The holding members 2l22-28-are then detached and the Wire netting 24,- located upon the frame members and the holding strips restored. The holding strip 30 is then also applied to the brace 27 to complete the device.
When the screen frames are'no longer re quired, the fastening devices are released and holding devices 2Q 21''22-2330 removed and the netting material removed. The pintle 19 and the brace 27 are then detached leaving the frame free to be collapsed or folded into the position shown in Fig. 2.
1 The brace 27 is then tied or otherwise se-' cured to the frame members and the netting material Wound around the folded frame and tied or otherwise secured in position. By this means the frame and'the screen material occupy a comparatively small space, and may be conveniently stored until required at the opening of the next season.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured, may be quickly applied to a door or Window opening, and enables the netting material to be thoroughly protected When not in use.
