Description

"inni iiii wiLLiAM TQHALLEFAS, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 113,764, dated April 18, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN CALORIC'ENGINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent: and making part of the sama.
I, WILLIAM T` HALLEFAS, of the city, county, and Stute el' New York, have invented certain Improvenn'nls in Calorie-Engines, of which the follow-ing is a spcciliciiiinn.
lily invention consists in the peculiar construction of the box lwhich, receives the cross-heard rocker ofA the piston, said box being,r chst on the piston-head in such nninner :is to 'orin an oil-well equal in depth to oneluillI (or more) the diinnetcr' ot' the cross-heard, whereby ircqncnt attention to oiling the crosshead is envien-il, :is l will further explain by reference to the drmving, in which- Figure l represents zi top vien' oi'niy invention;
Figure 2, zi side elevation; und
Figure 3, :i vertical section.
In the said drawing* A indicates the cylinder;
B, :i iinnge cast on the cylinder for reception of the packing C', which consists ol' leather rings, or their equivalents, one oi' the rings, l), keeping the cylinder nir-tight, the other, C', ].n'event-in dirt or too inuch oil passing flown with the piston into the cylinder, both rings` lbrniing ;x. V when pressingngziinst the piston, :is shown i n iig. 3; Afind l) is the confining-plate, which holds the packing C C' in position by. screws l'l E, passing through the plate and packing into the cylirnler-iiunge l.
l" is' the piston,
G, the piston-head.;
H, the box or bearing for the reception ofthe crosshead, east; on the piston-head G, said box` being closed at the ends g' g', thereby forming,r an oil-well for the rocking cross-head K ofthe piston-rod L; :ind
M M are the cops for holding the cross-head in the boxbyscrew's n u. A
The raised cross-head box H prevents its becoming too much heated by the hot nir of the engine, and prevents the burning or drying up of the oil in the oil-reservoir. l
The double packingr C C', with a splice between, is :Liso specially intended to isolate the lubricating oil held above the outer pecking, and thereby protect it i'roni the excessive heat of the hot air eniployed to drive the engine.
What I claim :is my invention in a. hot-air or caloricengine is 'The device herein described for keeping the journuls of the cross-head K lubricated notwithstanding the high temperature of the air in the cylinder, con sisting of the raised"isolzited box H having an oil- Well or reservoir formed around thesaid cross-head journals,substantially as herein specified.
In testimony whereof I` have hereunto setiny signature this 16th day of September, 1870.
