LEASE-FORMING DEVICE.
Application filed October 22, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EUGENE HOLT and LAFAYETTE HOLT, citizens. of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Alamance and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lease-Forming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which we have illustrated one form in which the invention may be embodied, which has been selected by us for the purpose of illustrating the invention, and the said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the said drawings,Figure 1 is a side view of our improved lease former and shield, and designed particularly for taking a lease in the warp threads prior to placing the same on a loom, a portion of the slasher being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of our improved lease former showing only a few of the separating disks and cams; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken through the lease rods and clamp forming the end of a beam; Fig. 4: is a similar view showing cords used instead of lease rods and leaving out the clamp; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the lease and lease rods; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the lease, lease rods and clamp as shown on the end of a beam; Fig. 7 is a fragmentary view of one of the clamps shown in open position; Fig. 8 is a side elevation partly in section of the lease forming roll, the roll being turned out of operative position; Fig. 9 is a similar view showing the roll turned into operative position; Fig. 10 is an elevation of one of our im proved lease forming cam disks; Fig. 11 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
In the process of winding yarn from spools or bobbins upon beams for use in looms and otherwise, it is customary to introduce between the warps at proper intervals what are known as lease rods or cords.
The object of the present invention is to facilitate the separation of the warp or to Specification of Letters Patent.

lift one and then the other half of the warp threads for the insertion in succession of the lease rods or cords.
Besides enabling a more perfect and rapid separation and lifting of the strands, our invention makes it possible for an unskilled person to perform the operation which now under the method in vogue requires fine eyesight and long training.
Our invention relates particularly to an improved lease forming roll used in conjunction with a warp-dressing machine or slasher for forming a lease of the warp threads or yarns after the same has passed through the dressing rolls or slasher, so that by the insertion of proper lease retaining devices, the warp may be severed near the warp beam, leaving the yarn in two equal separated portions, the threads of which alternate and maintain their crossed relation, whereby when the beam has been taken to the loom, the yarn in its leased condition may be readily run in through the harnesses.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which will operate on the finest weaving warps and which may be assembled expeditiously by an unskilled person. It is to be understood, however, that the device may also be employed as a heddle. and in other relations in which its use will be advantageous or desirable.
In carrying out our invention, we employ a roll made up of a series of disks and cams, which are preferably arranged alternately, and the adjacent cams have flattened or straight portions which are oppositely disposed and form what we term a lease former, and to combine therewith a shield which will protect the disks and cams and cover the same when not in use. We also advantageously shape the shield ends in such manner that they will act as guides for the lease that they will act as guides for the lease rods, when the device is in operation and to enable it to produce the best effects in connection with the article, with which it is to be used and under the circumstances of use.
In the drawings, 1 designates a portion of the frame of a slasher (shown in dotted lines) in the bearings of which is loosely mounted a shaft 2. A. sleeve 3 envelope said shaft and is provided on its periphery with longitudinal grooves 4: in which keys 5 rest. In making up our improved roll the base or support is formed in this way and disks 6 and cams 7 are alternately arranged upon said sleeve to form a roll. The disks and cams are provided with notches 8 which engage said keys. It will, therefore, be seen that the turning of the sleeve 3 will simultaneously move the disks and cams.
Each cam is provided with a curved face 10 and a flat portion 11 and adjacent cams which are separated by the disks 6 have their flat faces oppositely disposed, whereby the threads Which pass: between said disks when the roll is in operative position are separated vertically to form a space for the insertion of a lease rod 12, as shown in Figs. 1, ,3, 5 and 6, or for a cord 13 as shown in Fig. 4. After the first lease rod or cord has been inserted, the lease roll (which in its entirety we will designate 14) is turned a half revolution to crossthe threads 15 vertically and bring the opposite cam faces into action to form the shed for the second lease rod or cord, and after the second rod or cord has been introduced the roll 14: is again turned a half revolution to complete the lease. The ordinary clamp16 is then placed on the warp threads and the thread is severed, thereby forming the outer extremity of the material upon the beam (not shown). When the extremity of the material upon the beam has been prepared in this manner it is ready for the loom, which forms no part of the present invention.
The lease forming roll is'prefcrably oscillated by' means of a hand wheel 17 which is provided upon an extremity of the sleeve 3, which extends outside of the frame 1 of the slasher. A shield 18 which is in the form of a half collar with closed ends is preferably clamped upon the shaft 2 by means of a set screw 19, and entirely incloses over one-half of the roll 14:. Each end of the shield (only one being shown) is provided with a projection 20, which acts to guide the lease rod through the shed. By loosening the set screw 19, the shield may be turned on its pivot to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, whereby the threads will be bridged over and will not engage the lease roll 14. The shields may be turned by any suitable means (not shown). It will also be seen by reference to Fig. 1, that a gravity tensioning roll 21, which has spindles 22' that are mounted in the vertical guides 28, is provided between the lease forming roll 14: and the comb 2 1 (shown in dotted lines) which is usually provided upon a slasher for the, purpose of maintaining the threads in proper engagement with the roll 14.
From the foregoing it will be seen that we have provided a device for taking or eration as done by hand. Our device is simple in construction and easily and practically indestructible. The disks and cams are also so arranged and dimensioned that a knot in the warp will pass over and not break, as the warp is being wound on the beam.
I While we have selected one embodiment of our invention for the purpose of illustrating the same, we do not desire tov be limited to the exact details of construction shownand described, as variations therein may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
H What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a slasher or warpdressing machine, a lease-forming roll arranged between the dressing roll and comb. 2. In combination with a slasher or warpdressing machine, a lease-forming roll arranged between the dressing roll and comb, said roll being made up of a series of alternately arranged cams and disks.
3. In combination with a slasher or warpdressing machine, a lease-forming roll arranged between the dressing roll and comb, said roll being made up of a series of alternately arranged cams and disks, each of said cams being provided with a flattened face, and the flattenedfacesjof adjacent cams being oppositely disposed. r
i 4. In combination with a slasher or warpdressing machine, a lease-formingro'll aroperated.
