Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. HADAWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swampscott, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tack- Pulling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to tack pulling machines, and more particularly to tack pulling machines which are adapted to engage the lasting tacks of a lasted shoe and remove the tacks from the shoe.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and eflicient tack pulling mechanism which will act with certainty to engage the lasting tacks and remove them from the shoe, and to also provide simple and efficiently acting means for ejecting the tack from the tack pulling device after it has been removed from the shoe.
With these objects in view, one feature of the invention contemplates the provision in a tack pulling machine provided with means for engaging the upper on opposite sides of the tacks, of tack pulling jaws which advance into the plane of the upper engaging means to engage and pull the tack. With this construction the jaws will act with certainty and in a reliable manner to engage and withdraw the lasting tacks, even when the tacks are driven in so that their heads are close to or partially embedded in the upper.
A further object of the invention contemplates the provision in a tack pulling machine of movable tack pulling jaws which are actuated to engage a tack and pull it from the shoe and to then forcibly eject the tack from the jaws. The tack pulling jaws may be operated in any suitable manner to forcibly eject the tack after they have operated to pull the tack from the shoe, without departing from this feature of the invention. It is preferred, however, to eject the tack from the jaws by imparting a rela tive movement to the jaws substantially in the direction of their pulling movement to eject the tack, and this construction forms a further feature of the invention.
In addition to the features above referred to, the invention also includes certain further features and combinations which will be hereinafter described and referred to in the claims.
The various features of the invention will be understood from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tack pulllng machine embodying the features of the invention in their preferred forms; Fig. 2 is a partial sectional View on line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the machine with one of the work supports broken away; Figs. 1 and 5 are detail elevations showing the operation of the tack pulling jaws in pulling and ejecting a tack; and Fig. 6 is a diagram indicating the path of movement of the tack engaging ends of the jaws.
In the construction shown the tack pulling devices consist of two tack pulling jaws 1 and 2 which are moved toward and from the work in engaging and pulling the tack. The work is supported during the pulling of the tack by engagement with a work support 3 against which the shoe is held by the operator. The machine is also provided with a second work support or guard 4 arranged to engage the upper on the in ner side of the row of lasting tacks. The work support 3 is provided on one side with an upwardly extending flange 5, and an upwardly extending plate 6 is secured to the other side of the work support, so that a passageway or chute is formed above the work support through which the tacks may be discharged. The work support is recessed at 7 for the passage of the tack engaging end of the rear tack pulling jaw 1, and is also provided with a thin work engaging plate which is secured to its under surface. The guard or work support 4 is provided with a projecting finger 8 which engages the lower front edge of the plate 6, and forms a tack engaging stop at the inner end of the throat between the adjacent edges of the work supports through which the tack is guided into position to be acted upon by the tack pulling jaws. The guard or work support 4 is adjustably secured to the end of a supporting arm 9, so that it may be properly adjusted with relation to the work support 3 and the ends of the jaws when in tack engaging position.
The shoe is presented to the machine with car the line of lasting" tacks extending parallel" with the tack engaging edges of the'tack' successively into position to be engaged by the jaws. In operating upon the tacks, the tack pulling jaws are advanced until their tack engaging ends project into or slightly beyond the plane of the' upper when held against the'worksupports 3 and 4, and are then closed to engage the opposite side of the tack, and arethen' retracted to Withdraw the tack from the shoe, the jaws being again opened or separated before or during the next succeeding advance movement toward the upper By thus operating the jaws to advance into or slightly beyond the plane of the work supports 3 and 4, the jaws may be made to engage and compress the upper on opposite sides of the tack so that theywill engage and pull tacks the heads of which are flush with or somewhat embedded in the upper. In removing such tacks, the shoe should be held forcibly against the work supports 3 and 4, so that the upper on opposite sides of the tack is held taut and smooth by the pressure of the work supports against the upper.
After the tack pulling jaws have been retracted to withdraw the tack from the shoe,
a relative movement is imparted to the jaws to forcibly'eject the tack carried thereby. In the construction shown the upward movement of the jaw 1 ceases after the tack has been pulled, while the upward movement of the jaw 2 is continued. This upward movement of the jaw 2 with relation to the jaw 1 carries the tack up along the front face of the jaw vluntil the tack passes the upper edge 10' of the jaw 1, when the pressure on the rear side of the tack being thus removed, it flies to the rear over the upper edge of the jaw l, as indicated in F ig. 5. After the tack has been ejected the jaws are separated or opened, and are again advanced so that they are brought simultaneously into tack engaging position, and are simultaneously engaged with the tack and retracted. The path of movement of the tack engaging edge of the jaw 1 is indicated at 1 and the path of movement of the tack engaging jaw 2 is indicated at 2- in Fig. 6.
The tack pulling jaw 1 is adjustably secured upon the lower arm of a lever 11 by clamping screws 12, and the jaw 2 is adjustably secured on the lower arm of a lever 13 by a clamping screw 14. The tack engaging end of the jaw 1 extends laterally from the shank of the jaw, so that the tack may be discharged over the upper edge of the jaw, as already described. A thin spring plate 15 extends rearwardly from the upper edge of the jaw l, and forms a guard for preventing the tacks which are discharged'over the below the jaw.
Thelever 11 which carries the tack pulling jaw 1 is pivotally mounted upon a stud 16 secured in a the lower end of a slide 17 which is reciprocated to advance and retract the aw by a cam 18 engaging a roll carried by an arm 19 projecting from the upper end of the slide. The lever 11 is rocked upon its pivot to move the jaw 1 toward and from the jaw 2 by a cam 20 engaging a roll on the upper end of a lever 21 which is connected by a link 22 with the upper end of the lever 11. The lever 13 which carries the jaw 2'is plvotally mounted upon a stud 23 secured 'in a slide 24 which is reciprocated to advance and retract the jaw by an eccentric 25 connected with the upper end of the slide byan eccentric rod 26. The lever 13 is rocked on its pivot to-move the jaw 2 toward and away from the jaw 1 by means of a cam 27 engaging a roll carried by the upper end of a lever 28 which is connected by means of a link 29 with the upper end of the lever 13. a
While I prefer to employ the specific construction and arrangement of ,parts'shown and described, it will be understood that this construction and arrangement is not essentialexcept so far as specified in the claims, and may be changed and modified without departlng from the broader features of the invention.
Having explained the-nature and object of the invention, and specifically described one form of machine in which it may be embodied, what I claim is 1. A tack pulling machine, having, in combination, tack pulling jaws, and mechanism for moving said tack, and for relatively moving the jaws in jaws in unison to pull athe direction of the pull to eject the tack,
substantially as described.

tuating the jaws to advance into the plane of the work engaging surface of the upper engaging means to close upon the tack and move away from the work to pull the tack, substantially as described.
3. A tack pulling machine, having, in combination, fixed work supports engaging the upper on opposite sides of the tack, tack pulling jaws, and means for automatically actuating said jaws to advance into the plane of the work supports and engage and pull a tack from ashoe' held against said supports, substantially as described.
4. A tack pulling machine, having, in combination, tack pulling jaws, and mechanism for moving the jaws in unison to pull a tack and for stopping the tack pulling movement tack to be ejected from between the jaws, substantially as described.
5. A tack pulling machine,having, in com bination, tack pulling jaws, and mechanism for imparting a tack pulling movement to the jaws in unison and for relatively moving the jaws in a direction to relieve the pressure upon one side only of the tack and eject the tack over one of the jaws, substantially as described.
