LEVIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining-Machines and Trucks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to mining mechanisms and to the wheeledtrucks adapted for transporting them from place to place. In an apparatus of the sort to which my invention relates the mining mechanism comprises cutting devices and an electric motor for driving them, and is as awhole bodily movable with respect to the truck. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the mining mechanism can be entirely separated from the truck to carry on the mining operations. i
The principal object of the invention is to provide in an apparatus of the sort above described an improved cable and reeling mechanism therefor to connect the motor with a suitable source of current supply. I
Another object is to provide a truck of the sort referred to having a cable reeling mechanism such as that mentioned.
Other objects will be apparent from the following specification and claims.

The three essential parts of the apparatus to which this invention relates are the mining or cutting mechanism, the transporting mechanism, and the cable and cable reeling mechanism, the purpose of the invention being to so construct these parts and so relate them that they can effectually coact in transporting the cutting mechanism from place to place, as from one room in the mine to another.

respect to' this without departing from the essential features of the invention, it is not necessary to illustrate or describe the parts of this mechanism in detail. The one illustrated has cutting devices A extending horizontally from one end and has an electric motor B which is connected with the cutting devices to drive them. The mining mechanism as shown is as a whole movable bodily with respect to the truck and is in fact mov able onto and off from it in the manner to be described. It will be understood, however, that the invent-ion as concerns some of its features is not limited to a mining mechanism of the exact sort shown or one mounted in the exact way shown. At a special place in the gearing and shafting of the mining machine provision is made for a connection with the powertransmitting parts on the transporting mechanism. Any suitable device can be employed for this purpose, and the motor, its armature, and the shafting and gearing can be arranged in any preferred way that will permit them to accomplish their several purposes and also allow them to be connected in the manner here contemplated. As shownin the present mechanism, the motor B has its armature shaft arranged longitudinally 'on the machine, and the gearing and shafting interposed between it and the cutting apparatus A are placed in the front of the motor. The armature-shaft of the motor B is extended backward beyond the commutator and beyond the rear bearing. and carries a clutch -or power supplying element, as indicated at 2. The other member of the clutch is shown at 3. This clutch, is for the purpose of connecting the mining machine or its motor to the mechanism on the transporting-truck, by means of which the machine or motor can be utilized to efiect its own propulsion bodily from place to place. I
The truck is indicated as a whole by 4. It has the bed part 5, mounted on the axles 6, 7, which latter are secured to the truck wheels 8, 8. At one end the bed part is provided with a transverse shaft 61, suitably mounted in bearings 1O, 11, on a transverse binder-frame 12. The bearing 10 carries a worm gear at 13, with which a wormpinion 14 on the shaft 15 engages, the shaft 15 carrying the aforesaid clutch element 3 as shown. The shaft 61 is connected to the axle 6 by a driving chain 16, and by this means motion imparted to the shaft 15 will be transmitted to the axle.
The frame of the truck comprises the side rails 18 and cross bars 19 and 20. To the side bars 18 is bolted a cast iron frame 21 which is provided with hearing boxes 22 for the axles 6 and 7. The forward axle is bent at each end between the bearing box and the wheel in such a manner that all of the parts of the axle lie in a single plane. \Vhen the bent axle is in such an angular position that its plane is horizontal, that is, when the extreme end portions of the axle are in the same horizontal pTane with the central portion, the front end of the truck is supported in its elevated horizontal position. ()n the other hand when the central part ofthe axle lies in the same vertical plane with the axle ends, but in a lower horizontal plane, the forward end of the truck is lowered into contact with the ground or floor.
Cam blocks 23, having peripherally grooved edges 24:, are keyed to the axle 7, preferably at points between the axle boxes. The grooved edges 24 are spirally formed with respect to the adjacent part of the axle 7, the forward end of each groove being at a less radial distance from the axle than the rear end of the groove. At the forward end of the grooved edge 24 of each of the cam blocks there is fastened one end of a rope 25 which engages the grooved edge 24 and passes over the idler pulley 26, loosely sleeved upon the rear axle 6, bein attached at its rear end to a hook 27 which is adjustably secured by means of a screw threaded engagement to the cross bar 28. This cross bar is provided at each end with shoes '29 which engage the inner edges of the side frame bars or rails 30, so as to permit horizontal movement of the cross bar with respect to the frame bars, while preventing vertical displacement. Thecentral portion of this cross bar 28 is elevated above the ends which engage with the frame bars 30, and is accordingly in such a position vertically that it will be engaged by the advancing end of the mining machine as it is moved into position upon the truck. It will be understood that any one of the well known means can be employed for moving the mining machine on .the truck as for instance when it is loaded or unloaded; preferably a rope C is secured at one end to the standard 12 of the binder frame 12, which supports the gear housing. At its other end the rope is wound upon a winch mechanism D carried by the mining machine and operated by the mining machine motor B. By means of this rope C and winch mechanism D the mining machine is enabled to draw itself upon the truck. To unload the mining machine it is only necessary tosecure the free end of the rope the reel frame 55.

Each of these boxes .is secured to one of the lugs'of the U-shaped reel frame 55.
Two reel supporting bars 56 are each secured at one end to the rear portion of the truck frame and extend longitudinally outward in position to support the frame bar 55. These supporting bars 56 are angleshaped in cross section, the vertical plate of each angle being providedwith transverse notches 57 of the same nature as rack teeth, and these notches receive the lower ends of The reel is driven by means of the rope 58 which passes around the sheave 59 on the reel shaft and the sheave 60 on the transverse power shaft 61. The sheave 60,is rotatable on the shaft 61 and may be rotatably connected therewith by means of a clutch 61 The relation of the diameters of the sheaves and the length of the rope 58 to the position of the teeth 57 is such that the frame 55 assumes an upward and rearward inclined position, and the center of gravity of the reel and cable coils wound thereon is to the rear of the point where the reel frame rests upon the rack teeth on the supporting bars 56. The inclination of the reel frame 55 can be readily changed by movin its lower ends to any desired position of engagement with supporting bars 56, and the tension inthe rope 58 can thereby be increased or diminished as desired.
Nhen the truckis being propelled toward the fixed end of the cable 51, the reel is wound by the mining, machine motor 50 and the power transmitting mechanism conecting' the motor with the reel, including the rop drive 58. Since a rope drive is always frictional in character and will permit slippage between the driv ing and. driven elements, if the gearings is rightly proportioned in the mechanism shown in the drawings, so that the motor will tend to drive the reel more rapidly than the speed of the truck will permit, the reel will actually rotate at just the speed necessaryto wind the cable, but will tend to rotate at a greater speed. The rope will slip upon the sheaves and the cable will be maintained properly taut. This frictional drive, or its equivalent, has long been recognized as essential to the proper operation of reeling mechanisms for conductor cables.
By changing the inclination of the frame tension in the rope 58, the friction be tween the rope and the sheave, and consequently the tension in the cable 51, are varied in amount. Thus, by a simple ex pedient, it is possible to adjust the tension in the cable 51, as may be desired. Furthermore, the entire reeling mechanism is readily detachable from the truck. When the mining machine is moved off from the truck and is operating to cut coal, it may be desired to mount the reel at some convenient point in the room or even upon the mining machine itself. To do this, it is only necessary to slip the rope 58 from the sheave 60 and to lift the frame 55 when the reel becomes freely movable.
Within the boxes 5st is mounted the current collecting mechanism. @ne of these boxes has within it the mechanism for gathering the positive current from the positive conductor of. the cable 51, and the other box is similarly adapted to collect current from the negative conductor of the cable 51. The conductor wires 62, 63, lead from these boxes respectively to the terminals of the miningmachine motor.
Since the reel is mounted in a low position near the tracks, the cable 51 is. guided thereto by means of the pulley 6%, which is journaled between the bars 65, each of which is secured at its forward end to the frame 55. The reel is mounted at one side of the center line of the truck so as to leave an unobstructed space in which is provided a platform 36 for the operator.
The operation of the truck is follows: T he front end of the truck being in its lowermost position, the mining machine is started upon the inclined truck rails 18, and is moved by its own power, as above described. rearwardly and upwardly until the advancing end of the mining machine engages the cross bar 28. At this juncture the ropes 25 are tightened and drawn rearward by the movement of the mining machine and the cam blocks 23 together with the axle 7 by which they are rigidly carried are pulled rearward in an arc of a circle about the axis of the extreme end portions of the axle as a center. in this way the 5 central part of the axle and the forward end of the truck are elevated until the clutch members 2 and 3 are brought into engagement with each other. The mechanism is so designed that the truck will aseo sume its normal horizontal position when the mining machine has reached the point necessary to bring the clutch elements into engagement. lhe reel is then placed in proper position upon the truck, if it is not 53 already in such position. After the mining machine and reel have been thus placed in position upon the truck the power of the mining machine motor is used to propel the truck and mining machine along the mine track to any desired locality. lVhile the truck is thus moved back and forth upon the mine tracks the reel winds and unwinds the cable. If necessary, the outer end of the cable is changed from one stationary conductor to another. To remove the mining machine from the truck, the rope from the mining machine is secured to some fixed object in front of the truck, and the motor is actuated in a direction to wind the rope. The mining machine is then drawn forward along the truck frame, the bar 28 is released, the axle 7 is permitted 'to rotate outward until the front end of the truck is lowered into contact with the ground. The mining machine continues its movement down the truck platform until it is entirely separated therefrom. lhe. reeling mechanism can then be removed from the supports 56 if the conductors 62, 83 are not sufficiently long to accommodate the movement of the mining machine about the room.
The tracks of a mine are rough and uneven and many very sharp curves are met with. in order to adapt a truck to follow the curves of such a track the wheels must lye placed very close together, and the wheels 8, 81' are therefore shown as being positioned near each other and near the longitudinal center of the truck. A mining machine, es-
pecially one of the sort illustrated, is very long thus necessitating a frame having long supporting bars therefor. And the cable reel in order not to interfere with the mining machine must be positioned at one end of the frame and at a considerable distance from the wheels. The result is that in passing around curves the reel itself is caused to move relatively some distance to the right or to the left of the center line of the track. Ordinarily this would interfere with the uniform winding of the cable upon the reel, and in order to counteract this tendency the guide sheave 64 has been provided. This sheave serves to guide the cable onto the reel at an angle which is substantially uniform for all positions of the reel with respect to the track. The operator must be at the rear of the truck where he can contuatins the reel. The reel and its immedic: ble for electrically connecting the elec-,
tric motor of the, mining machine with the cable on the reel when the machine is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck.

The combination of a wheeled truck, a separate mining machine loadable onto the truck and comprising cutting devices, a motor for driving the cutting devices and a clutch element connected with the motor, a cable reel on the truck mounted separately from the mining machine, a flexible conductor cable on the reel, a separable conductor for connecting the reel and the cable 1 with the mining machine motor, and a power transmitting mechanism connected with the truck wheels and with the reel and comprising a clutch element adapted to engage the clutch element on the mining machine when the machine is in position on the truck.

The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining machine separable from the truck and adapted to be supported thereby, the said machine having an electric driving motor and a clutch element connected with the motor, power transmitting mechanism connected with the truck wheels and comprising a clutch element adapted to be engaged by the said clutch element on the mining machine, a cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining machine, a flexi- -l;le,conductor cable on the reel, a conductor for connecting the said cable with the motor, and a power connection compr sing a manually controllable clutch between the said power transmitting mechanism and the reel;

In a mining machine truck, the combination of a low frame having longitudinally arranged mining machine supports with their upper surfaces unobstructed, supporting wheels for the frame near the longitudinal center thereof, a rotatable reel on the frame beyond one end of the mining machine supports aud remote from the said wheels, an electric conductor cable on the reel, a non-rotatable electric conductor terminal connected with the cable and mounted on the frame, and a power transmitting connection between the truck wheels and the reel arranged to leave unobstructed the space above the said mining machine supports, the said connection comprising a manually operable clutch.
16. In a mining machine truck, the combination of a low frame having longitudinally arranged mining machine supports with their upper surfaces unobstructed, supporting wheels for the frame near the longitudinal center thereof, a rotatable reel on the frame beyond one end of the mining machine supports and remote from the said wheels, an electric conductor cable on the reel, a non-rotatable electric conductor terminal connected with the cable and mounted on the frame, and a train of power transmitting elements arranged to leave unobstructed the space above the said mining machine supports, the said train being connected at one end with the supporting wheels and comprising at the other end an exposed power receiving element adjacent the said mining machine supports.
17. In a mining machine truck, the combination of a low frame having longitudinally arranged mining machine supports with their upper surfaces unobstructed, supporting wheels for the frame near the longitudinal center thereof, a rotatable reel on the frame beyond one end of the mining machine supports and remote from the said wheels, an electric conductor cable onthe reel, a non-rotatable electric conductor terminal connected with the cable and mounted on the frame, and a train of power transmitting elements arranged to leave unobstructed the space above the said mining machine iii supporting the frame, a train of power transmitting devices connected at one end with the truck' wheels and provided at the other end with a clutch element, a rotatable reel on the frame, an electric conductor "cable connected to the reel to be wound thereon, non-rotatable electric conductor terminals connected with the cable and mounted on the frame, and a driving connection between the said train of power transmit ting devices and the reel.
19. In a mining machine truck, the combination of a low frame having longitudinal guiding and'supporting elements, wheels for supporting the frame, a rotatable reel, a reel support removably. mounted on the frame, an electric conductor cable connected to the reel to be wound thereon, and conductor terminals mounted on the reel support and connected with the reel and the cable to be removable therewith and adapted for use either when the reel is on or'oif the truck.
20. In a mining machine truck, the combination of a low frame having longitudinal guiding and supporting elements for supporting the frame, a rotatable reel removably mounted on the frame, an electric conductor cable connected to the reel to be wound thereon, conductor terminals connected with the reel and the cable to be re movable therewith and adapted for use either when the reel is on or off the truck,
and means for operatively connecting the truck wheels with the reel when the reel is in place on the truck.
21, In a mining machine truck, the combination of a low frame having longitudinal guiding and supporting elements, wheels for supporting the frame, a train of power transmitting devices connected at one end with the wheels and provided at the other end with a clutch element, a rotatable reel removably mounted on the frame, an electric conductor cable connected to the reel to be wound thereon, conductor terminals connected with the reel and the cable to be re movable therewith and adapted for use either when the reel is on or off the truck,
and means for operatively connecting the reel with the saidpower transmitting devices when the reel is on the truck.
22. The combination of a'wheeled truck, a mining mechanism comprising cutting devices and an electric driving motor therefor, the said mechanism as a unit being movably supported on the truck, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining mechanism, an electric conduct r cable on the reel, and electric conductor means including a flexible cable for electrically connecting the electric motor of the mining mechanism with the cable on the reel when the mechanism is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck.
23. The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining mechanism comprising cutting devices and an electric driving motor therefor, the said mechanism as a' unit beingmovably supported on the truck, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining mechanism, an electric conductor cable on the reel, electric conductor means including a flexible cable for electrically connecting the electric motor of the mining mechanism with the cable on the reel when the mechanism is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck, and
means for transmitting the power of the motor. to move the said mining mechanism with respect to the truck. a

The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining machine adapted'to be supported on the truckbut separable therefrom, the said machine having an electric driving motor, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining machine, an electric conductor cable on the reel, electric conductor means including a flexible cable for electrically connecting the electric motor of themining machine directly with the cable on the reel when the machine is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck, and means for transmitting the power of the motor to move the mining machine along the truck.

a separate mining machine loadable on the truck and comprising cutting devices and a motor for driving the cutting devices, a cable reel normally mounted on the truck separately from the mining machine in a manner to permit ready removal, a flexible conduc tor cable on the reel, and a flexible conductor to connect the reel and the cable with r the mining machine motor when the mining machine is in loaded position'on thetruck or in a position-removed from the truck, or when the reel is on the truck or supported independently thereof.

The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining mechanism comprising cutting devices and an electric driving motor therefor, the said mechanism as a unit being movably supported on the truck, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately 'from the mining mechanism, an electric conductor cable on the reel, electric conductor means including a flexible cable for electrically connecting the electric motor of the mining mechanism with the cable on the reel when the mechanism is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck, and power transmitting mechanism adapted to operatively connect the motor of the said mining mechanism with the truck wheels to rotate them.
28. The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining mechanism comprising cutting devices and an electric driving motor therefor, the said mechanism as a unit being movably supported on the truck, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining mechanism, an electric conductor cable on the reel, electric conductor means including a flexible. cable for electrically connecting the electric motor of the mining mechanism with the cable on the reel when the mechanism is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck, and power transmitting mechanism adapted to operatively connect the motor of the said mining mechanism with the said reel to rotate it and with the truck wheels to rotate them.
29. The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining mechanism comprising cutting devices bodily movably supported on the truck, electric motive mechanism comprising a motor connected with the cutting devices and movable with them relatively to the truck, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining mechanism, an electric conductor cable on the reel, electric conductor means including a flexible cable for electrically connecting the said electric motive mechanism with the cable on the reel when the mining mechanism is in any one of a variety of positions with re spect to the truck, and power transmitting mechanism adapted to operatively connect the said motive mechanism with the said reel to rotate it.

The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining mechanism comprising cutting devices bodily movably supported on the truck, electric motive mechanism comprising a motor connected with the cutting devices and movable with them relatively to the truck, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining mechanism, an electric conductor cable on the reel, electric conductor means including a flexible cable for electrically connecting the said electric motive mechanism withthe cable on the-reel when the mining mechanism is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck, and power transmitting mechanism adapted to operatively connect the said motive mechanism with the truck wheels to rotate them.

The combination of a wheeled truck, a mining mechanism comprising cutting devices bodily movably supported on the truck, electric motive mechanism comprising a motor connected with the cutting devices and movable with them relatively to the truck, a rotatable cable reel mounted on the truck separately from the mining mechanism, an electric conductor cable on the reel, electric conductor means including a flexible cable for. electrically connecting the said electric motive mechanism with the cable on the reel when the mining mechanism is in any one of a variety of positions with respect to the truck, and power transmitting mechanism adapted to operatively connect the said motive mechanism with the said reel to rotate it and with the truck wheels to rotate them. The combination of a low truck frame having longitudinally arranged mining machine supports, supportingtrack wheels for the frame near the center thereof, a long mining machine separablyanounted on the said supports and having an electric motor, a rotatable reel on the frame beyond one F end of the mining machine, an electric conductor cable on the reel, a flexible conductor connecting the cable on the reel with the motor of the mining'm-achine, a cable guide device at the end of the frame adjacent the reel for guiding the cable onto the reel as the position of the reel with respect to the track varies transversely in following curves of the track, and a train of elements for transmitting the power of the motor of the --mining machine to the reel to drive it and to the truck wheels to drive them.

The combination of a low truck frame having longitudinally arranged mining machine supports, supporting track wheels for the frame near the center thereor, a long mining machine separably mounted on the said supports, and having an electric motor, a rotatable reel mounted on the frame beyond one end of themining machine with the center of the reel at one side of the longitudinal center-line of the frame an operators platform adjacent the reel and secured to the frame at the other side of the center line thereof, an electric conductor cable on the reel, and a flexible conductor connecting the cable on the reel with the motor of the mining machine.

The combination of a low truck frame having longitudinally arranged mining machine supports, supporting track Wheels for the frame near the center thereof, a rotatable reel on the frame beyondone end of the mining machine supports, an electric conductor cable on the reel, a flexible conductor connecting the cable on the reel with the motor of the mining machine, and a cable guide device at the end of the frame adjacent the reel forzguiding the cable onto the reel as theposition of the reel with respect to the track varies transversely in following curves of the track.
