WINDOW-FASTENING.
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
Application filed September 5,1913. Serial No. 788,855,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. Hoes, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at and whose post-office address is No. 36 Willow avenue, Schenectady, county of Schenectady, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fastenings, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v f
It is the object of the present invention to provide a window fastener adapted for fastening the sashes together and for securing the sashes to the window casing.
The device is of simple construction and cheap to manufacture, and is so arranged that it need not be made in rights and lofts, but can be used on either side of the window sash at will, simply by reversal of one of the threaded bolts.
In theaccompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective'yiew of the fastening in place on the window; Fig. 2 shows the fastening in side elevation. The fastening may be made from cast metal, iron,.brass or the like, but preferably is a vow base 2 shaped to fitagainst the stile of the lower sash. Attachment to the sash'ma be made by means of screws-3 countersun flush with the metal, thus making it possible for the device to be attached without the aid of skilled labor. 5 v
The platform 1 carries a -lng'4 integral therewith and centrally positioned on the platform, this lug being drilled and tapped to receive a threaded bolt 5 which carries an integral thumb piece 6, whereby it maybe turned easily to advance or withdraw the 'bolt by turning it in its threaded socket.
The bolt can be advanced to seat'against the side of the stile 7 of the upper sash,-but
preferably it is made to take into sockets'8 formed by drilling into the sash. ,These sockets may be lined with ferrules to give a finished appearance and to protect them against wear. The base 2 also carries an integral ing 9 forming a socket to support the screw-threaded bolt 10, and this bolt is adapted to seat in holes 11 made the vertical window stop 12. It will be seen that by withdrawing bolt 10 and inserting it from the other side, the fastening can be changed over from right-hand to left-hand, so that only one type of drop forging need be made' With the fastening constructed and attached as above disclosed, it is possible to open either the top or the bottom sash of the window and then lock it to the Qther sash and to the window casing. If desired both sashes may be opened a short distance and at the same time locked against v';gf nrther movement, thus preventing the simultaneous shifting of both sashes to increasethe open- ,70 ing above or below. The device can also be used to lock the'windows seciirely when they are entirely closed. It is not unsightly in appearance and does not interfere with the proper manipulation of the window shades, .75 and is free from springs or other delicate parts which might get out of adjustment, and furthermore it has th importantiaidvantage that when fora time the locking of feet is considered unnecessary, both of the 30 threaded bolts can be retracted far enough "to permit free up-and-down movement of the'sashes without the need for any atten-gtion on )art of the operator, this being 1 a great con 'ence over construction 35 having spring :lts which of necessity must be withdrawn when the is being raised,
even though at that particular time there may be no need for a lock on the window.
lVhat I claim a A window iastenercomprising a rightv angle base adapted be secured to the top rail and either st l 1 lower sa sh,sa-i base having on i ontal pgrtion a mas,

ing completely across said vertical portion and having a transversely screw-threaded JOHN HOGG socket, and a threaded bolt fitting sai'd' socket Witnesses: and adapted to engage thewindow-easing, F .s M. JENNINGS,
the bolt being removable and reversible GEORGE H. PFEIF.
