Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
Application filed May 6, 1914. Serial No. 836,836.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN SoHAnE, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Making Hinge-Leaves for Loose-Leaf Binders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in method of making hinge leaves for loose leaf binders, and relates particularly to the hinge connections of the leaves described and claimed in a companion application filed May 6, 1914, Serial No. 836,835.
The primary object of the invention is to enable the hinge leaves to be formed with ears which are produced by offsetting the stock at one of the longitudinal side edges of the blank and reducing thethickness of the ofiset parts so as to enable theears to be formed in the most expeditious and economical manner.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a die of a form which enables practice of the present method. the stock being indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a section is a fragmentary top plan of a leaf completed lip; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
' In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a die 1 is provided which is formed with a shoulder 2 and a shallow depression 3, the bottom of which latter is inclined as indicated at 4, the inclination being downwardly with respect to the upper face 5 of the die and outwardly away from the shoulder 2. As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings the shallow depression 3 has an ovaloid or elliptical configuration, and the punch 6 as depicted in Fig. 5 has a corresponding, though somewhat smaller crosssectional configuration, in order that, as
. depicted in Fig. 3, the lower end 7 of the punch may be received in the depression 3. The lower end 7 of the punch is given an inclination corresponding to that of the bottom 4: of the depression.
The method is practised as follows: The stock S which is to form one of the hinge leaves is in strip form and is placed on the upper face of the die so as to engage or abut the shoulder 2 at one of the longitudinal side edges of the strip. the opposite side edge of the strip extending partly over the depression 3 as shown in Fig. 2, the stock being held rigidly in the position shown in Fig. 2, in any suitable maner. Power applied to the punch 6 moves same downwardly thus forcing that part of the stock, which extends over depression 3 and which contacts with the punch, into the depression and thins same by spreading or flattening to the form shown in Fig. 3 in which it will be noted the lip L is simultaneously given a downward and outward inclination. The punch has its greatest diameter somewhat less than the greatest diameter of depression 3 in order that an inclined connecting web W may be formed by the punch to connect the lip L to the body of the leaf, the spreading action of thepunch effecting the somewhat ovaloid formation of lip shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings. The lips L alternately overlap the two hinged leaves and afford a hinged connection'between the leaves as illustrated in the application above identified. Prior to the present invention theselips have been formed by cutting out parts of the stock thus leaving the lips projecting from the latter, but this method of forming the lips results in a large waste of material which the present invention completely eliminates.
What is claimed is:
1. A die for making hinge leaves for loose leaf binders having a raised shoulder on its upper face against which one side of'the stock is adapted to abut and having a shallow depression in its upper face of substantially elliptical contour located opposite to the shoulder and spaced therefrom, said depression having a bottom wall which is inclined downwardly at the outer end portion of the depression, and a punch of a size to enter the depression having its under face inclined to, conform to the inclination of the 1 bottom of the depression.
2. A die for making hinge leaves for'loose leaf binder-shaving a depression on its up-,
per face of a shape corresponding to that to be given the leaf, means to engage the stock atone sidethereof so that the opposite side of the stock overhangs the depression,
and a punch'reoeivahle in the depression to 10 force the material at said opposite side of Y 7 (topics of this patentmay be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissionerof Patents,
