Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
Application led anuary 14L 1915. Serial No. 2,1381- T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARKIS JELALIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing vat the cit delice and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sporting Dirigible Balloons, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to dirigible air ships, and more particularly to that class of air-shipsemploying aidirigible balloon for assisting in lifting a person and embodying wings for driving said person for# ward.
The object in view is to provide means to easily permit a person to fly in the manner of a bird by the aid of the gas bag.
The invention consists of the peculiar features of construction and combination of parts as hereafter described and claimed.
In describing the j invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying sheet of drawingsin Whichh Figure 1 is a side elevation of the balloon from which suspends a body of a person. Fig. 2 is a top view of the device as applied lto the back of the person. Fig. 3 is a plan v'iew showing the relation of the device as applied to the body of the person. Fig. 4
is a front view showing the device as strapped to the body of a person. Fig. 5 is a enlarged detail view of a rectangular back support, illustrating the folding manner of the side projecting wings.
Referring to the drawings, numeral 1 designates a balloon from which suspends a body of a person 3, Aby means of suspensions2; with side projecting wings 4,`the function of which is to react against the atmosphere to make a safe gradual downward descent whenever the gas bag collapses. Means are provided also to fold said Wings when desired by the operator.
Extending outwardly from the person 3 is a pair of bird-like wings 5, which are secured to the arms of said person by means of belts 9, and the inner ends of said wings 5 are pvoted to the upper side of the rectangular support 10 as shown in Fig. 3 and in Fig. 4.
The wings 5 may be easily and freely lflapped as may be desired by the person or the operator by the power of the arms, thus forcing the air directly beneath the laterally outwardly from the projecting wings 4. Said wings 4 extend of Cranston, in the county of Provi-v sides of the rectangular support 10, said support 10 is secured to the p body of the'person 3, by means of straps or belts 6, as shown in Fig. 1, and in Fig..4.
. Immediately beneath the' straps 6,- is a soft cushion 7 applied lengthwise to the body of the person 3, this cushion' 7 is utilized to keep the body of the person free from pressure from said straps 6. A similar cushion is also provided in the back.
Extending from the forward end of the person 3, is an outwardly extending flat pentagonal hat 8, applied and secured to the he'ad of said person, the purpose of this hat is to keep the head of the person in level position by the aid ofits outwardly extending portion.
In Fig. 5, is illustrated the folding man-' ner of side projecting wings 4, in said figure numeral 15 designates a series of Hat wing supports, and near to the inner ends thereof are provided eyes which are loosely mounted on vertically arranged stationary pins 16 secured to the back support 10. The inner ends of said supports 15 having pivotal connection with a flat bar 17, said bar y17, being provided with a spring attachment 18, and a rope 19 extending forwardly from the rear end of said spring adjacent to the operator. So it is apparent that when a pull is made from the free end of the rope 19, the sup ports 15 will have folding movement/into backward position through the connection with bar 1 asshown with dotted lines in said Fig. 4.
In use the gas bag may be omitted in orv der that the apparatus may form a glider,

From the merits of the device described, it will be seen that a person will be able to fly safely and successfully in the manner of a bird. v It should be understood that the material used for the purpose described should be light and firm, such as bamboo or other suitable material.
Thus having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is j l. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a gas ba having means to permit the escape of gas rom the latter, a rectangular back support suspended from said bag and adapted to be secured to the body of the aviator, a flat outwardly extending wing portion pivoted to and projecting from each side of said support, a pair of bird-like wings pivotally secured to the forward end of said support, and arm-securing straps on said wings,

An apparatus of the character described, comprising a gas bag having means to permit the gas to escape from the latter, a rectangular support for the aviator having outwardly extending planes pivoted to and projecting from each side thereof, wings pivotally secured to the said support, forj wardly of its planes, said support and said wings having straps for securing to the body of the aviator.
