ALBERT LIEB, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
NOZZLE-AREA AND DRAFT REGULATOR FOR LOCOMOTIVE-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
Application filed January 20, 1913. Serial No. 742,992.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT LIEB, a citi zen of the United States of America, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzle-Area and Draft Regulators for Locomotive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a mechanism by which the amount of steam passing through a locomotive nozzle tip may be increased or decreased and the draft regulated by means of a spindle and tapered bulb operating in the nozzle stand.
I accomplish my object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a lo comotive nozzle stand, a partition therein, a spindle with tapered bulb operating within said stand and a lever and controlling mechanism therefor; Fig. 2 is a top view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail of the spindle housed in a central hole or passage in the partition and a tapered bulb on said spindle; Fig. l is a cross section of the partition and spindle and said lever; Fig. 5 is an elevation of a double stand, and Fig. 6 is an elevation of a gage and an operating lever with controlling rod.
In the drawings similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, A being a nozzle stand and B a nozzle tip thereon. B is a partition therein dividing the interior of the lower part of said nozzle stand into two compartments or chambers C C; a passage D extends vertically through the center of said partition. E is a spindle operated in said passage D. Passage D is provided at its top with a stufling box D to prevent steam escaping down past said spindle. Said spindle is provided with a slot E. The front of the nozzle stand is also provided with a slot, F, and the front of the partition with a corresponding slot F through which corresponding slots a lever H passes. Duplicate spaced lugs I I rigid on the stand at opposite sides of said corresponding slots and provided with corresponding holes 2' 2' support a shaft to which the outer end of said lever is attached by means of a set screw J; the outer end of said shaft is connected with an arm L which arm is at tached to a connecting rod K, the other end of which rod is attached to the bottom of a reverse lever M. Said lever M is connected with a frame K in a locomotive cab; the top of said frame K is provided with notches or teeth to gage the area in the nozzle by.
moving lever M backward and forward. Lever H and its controlling mechanism raises and lowers spindle E and a tapering bulb O thereon by which bulb the amount of steam escaping through the nozzle is regulated.
The device can be adjusted with a double nozzle, as shown in Fig. 5, by putting an oif set in each spindle and I desire to reserve to myself the right to make the last mentioned change in construction, as also to make any other changes that are merely mechanical.
I aim to operate my regulator from the side of a smoke box of an engine instead of at the front, using a graduated gage connected with the engine cab so as to show the area of the nozzle tip while the engine is working steam. My nozzle stand can be operated in any cab while the engine is working steam and the construction obviates back pressure of steam.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A nozzle area regulator for locomotive en gines comprising a nozzle stand having a slot in the front thereof, a fiat tip on the top thereof with an inwardly flared edge to reduce the draft area space, a partition supported vertically by the bottom of the nozzle stand, a passage central in said partition extending from the bottom of said stand to the top of the partition, a smiling box at the top of said passage, a spindle housed in said passage the lower parts of both partition and spindle having corresponding slots therein, a tapered bulb carried by said spindle, duplicate lugs with corresponding holes therein rigid on opposite sides of the slot in the front of the nozzle stand, a shaft supported in said lugs, a lever carried by said shaft extending through the slot in the front of the stand its inner end engaging with the slots in said partition and spindle,
V-to raise and lower said spindle and bulb an arm on said shaft, a rod engaging the In testimony whereof I ailix my signature other end, of sald arm and a gage, said lever 1n presence of two Witnesses.
and its operating mechanism being adapted ALBERT LIEB Witnesses:
OTTO C. LIEB, GEORGE N. ADAMS.
from the front of said stand from a line horizontally above the base of the nozzle area regulating stand.
Copies of this patent Inay be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
