SHIPS HULL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed November 13, 1914. Serial No. 871,985.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOTHAR VON Korrnx', a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Stettin-on-the-Oder, Kingdom of Prussia, in the German Empire, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Ships Hulls, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improvement in ship hulls and more particularly refers to the construction and arrangement of the bilges and propeller shaft tunnels.
In hulls for ships propelled by three or more propellers and having two or more longitudinally extending hollows in the lower face of the bottom of their aft part it is well known, to construct and arrange the bilges bounding the said hollows, as tunnels for the propeller shafts. Such hulls are disclosed by my prior U. S. Patent 1034626 dated August 6th, 1912. In these hulls however, the arrangement is such, that the outer bilges of the frames and the outside sheathing respectively which form the propeller shaft tunnels, are ending with respect to the longitudinal sectional plan of the hull in advance of the inner bilges and inner propeller shaft tunnels respectively.
According to the present invention the arrangement is such that the inner bilges and propeller shaft tunnels are ending in advance of the outer ones.
It has been established by towing tests made with models that by the improved arrangement the resistance is materially reduced and a greater efiiciency of the outer propellers is obtained than by means of the well known arrangement in which the outer propellers are situated in front of the inner propeller or propellers.
In order that my invention may be more fully understood by one skilled in the art to WlllCh it appertains, I shall now proceed to describe the same in detail and for that purpose shall refer to the accompanying sheet of drawing whereon I have shown, as example, the body plan of the port afterpart of a ships hull of the German Impemior type with four propellers (two on each side), made in accordance with and embodying my invention.
The several frames are denominated in succession from stern to main frame by 1, 11}, 2, 2%, 3, 10.
As evident from the drawing the inner bilge or propeller shaft tunnel or is ending in or about in the plane of the frame 29;, while the outer bilge or propeller shaft tunnel b ceases in or about in the plane of the frame 13;. The inner bilge or propeller shaft tunnel a is therefore ending one or about one full frame-distance (berth and space) in front of the outer bilge or propeller shaft tunnel.
I claim:
In a hull for a ship propelled by three or more propellers, the combination with a plurality of longitudinally extending hollows in the lower face of the bottom of its aft part, of bilges laterally bounding the said hollows and forming propeller shaft tunnels, the inner shaft tunnel or tunnels ending in front of the outer ones, substantially as set forth.
LOTHAR VON KGPPEN.
