WELL-Meme.'
4 To 'all whom# mag/concern.'
'Be it known that I, DANIELE. HUNT, a'
l' citizen of the United States, residing-in the4 city ofA Easton, 'county of Northampton, and
*Statel of Pennsylvania', haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements i1'1' lWe11A Packing, of which the following is .a specication, reference being-had to the accomdrawings, forming a' part hereof; My invention 'relates to a well packing and oneobjectof my invention is to provide -a pacln'ngl to be carried` into'position by the -ifellca'sing and which iscon'structed to provide al water' tivht seal in the. space between! the casing and tie side of the-well to prevent liquid flowing .aboutf'the outside ofthe casingl'linto the bottm of thewell.y I
" oil drilling', for instance, saltwateris usually found' at' vabout 2000 feet below the surface, and,A to `preyent this andv 'other waters :from flowing intoA the oilpocket at the bottom of the wellcement packing vis vsometimes 'introduced inthe space' between Athe casin and' side .of the well but as' the cement-ta es time to'hardenvfrequently three 0 1", four days are lost before the casing can be wiped dry for 'testing; I propose to' carry adjacent theendofthe casmg' a 'collapsible tube: capable of quicklyexpanding to fill Vthe space .between the casing and side lof the One means by which I attain' this object [is to pina. shoe to the lower` end "of the casing and surround the casing for -some distanealong its length with a-water t ht, liexibie tube the lowerv end of which is Xed to the shoe and the-upper end o which Y' is suitably aiixed to the casing and when the shoe is held by a constriction in the well to'permit the weight of the casing to :shear ofi retaining vpins allowing-the casing to slide through the shoe and thej'tube to 'ex-.
l pand or wrinkle outward into engagement withthe side of thewell. v
Thefvarious otherl objects of the invention will -be more fullyset-forth 4in the followingdescription of one formv of mechav-` nism embodymg the `invention which con-J sists-in the new and 4nove1 r `eatures of.con`* 250 struction? and 'combination 'of vparts hei-ein# after set fforth Aand claimed.
` For the purpose of` disclosmgfa physical `embodiment :of -my invention referencel 1s had to.' the `accompanyir'ig drawings Figure 1" i s-a-side elevationfpartly in section of a well casing, showing al preferred embodiment of my invention n xed thereto .in position engaging a constriction in well,v
Fig.y 2 'is a similar view showing the flexible tubeyof. the packer in sealing position', and
Fig. 3l an enlarged vdetailed sectional view. of the unproved packer. and adjacent parts Ref rring1 to=the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention there is' vshowna well I in which is inserted the' usual casing comprising sections lower; section 2 of which has suitably aixed thereto .and spaced from the lower end, a
setions are'united.- Spacedfr'om the' collar 3.1m the direction toward the `end of lthesection 2,- and telescoping.thefsame, is a set shoe 4 temporarily fastened" to the. section by transversely extendingepns 5. This shoe vis substantially frusto-conical or 'otherwise 'tapered in section toward' the lower end so -as to vprovlde a wedging action whengdriven between thec'asing and side of the well.
" Having one end suitably affixed to the Acollar 3,-as by riveting the j same tov the reduced vHarige on th'e ring 4Saandiorming `therewith a 'water tight joint, with v'the l cas@ ingl .2 land having lts other end suitably aiXed to 'the shoe 4 is a-'iejiible waterproof .Swim-tion 0f LettersPatent.'v `51?tented'A j-Dr. 20, 1915.. .Appnation med June 23,1913., serial-'Na 775,274. i

While it is obvious that any su-itablewaterproof tube may-bevused, I have found thata tube of' 'rawhide treated with a .watem'prooff ing oil possesses suiiicient pliabil'ity to permitl the-'same to expandinto tight-engageterial such as twine has been :found quite suitable.' The end oi the casing may-...have
astop ring '8 aixed thereto whichwill 'retain the lsh'oe t" on the vcasing should it'be desired towithdraw lthe `casing andsho`e I from the-.well after the pins broken.
operation'- the casing, having my l5 below the same.
50 employed. l
Having thus described my invention, whatpr'oved packer affixed thereto, is lowered into the well inthe usual vmanner and when the shoe 4 engages a restriction or shoulder-'in .the well, formed by the `reduced diameter 5 of the drilling, as shown in Fig. l, the shoe will be held .thereby and the heavy weight of the casing will shear off. the pins5 permitting the casing to slide through the shoer thus causing'the sleeve 3 to approach the 1'() shoe 4. The tube 6 therebetween will belly .20 it .to force the tube outward, and only a slight movement of the casing will compact the filler into a solid hard packing ring.
It is apparent that this mode of well pack- "ing is inexpensive; does not Arequire any special tool to insert the same in place; can
. bereadily withdrawn with the casing; does v not,.r'equi-re any drilling to it thesoasing in place, and as it is held against the sideof the well by the heavy weight of the casing,
s lfrequently 2000 feet in length, a rm -water tight engagement with the side of the well is effected. In making the tube 6 of rawhide a tough, readily waterproofed and inexpensive member is formed .which readily conforms to the irregularities in the side of the well and possesses suicient strength to withstandthe weight of the casing with out tearing.' If4 for any reason a leak should occur in thetube 6 thefupper or outer layers 40 ofthe fibrous filler 7 would absorb the water and in expanding would force the lower portion of the tube 6 firmly into engagement V with the'wall' of the well. g Although I have "shown onlyione form of mechanisml embodying my invention, it is obvious that various changes withinA the skill of the mechanic may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention, provided the means set forth in the following claims are I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is i with the'side of the well. i f i 2. A' combined well casingand packing 1. A combined well casing and packing' comprising a casing, a collar afHXe'dl to said casing and forming a water tight connection therewith', a frusto-conical shoe having its smaller end downward, Ieans fastening said shoe to said ,casing between the collar and the adjacent end thereof, .a waterproof tube having one end fastened to said collar and the other end fastenedA to the shoe and having a water tight -connectionwith the collar and a' fibrous filler disposed between said sleeve and shoe and between `said casing and tube whereby when said shoe zis wedged from movement by a constriction in the well the weight of the casing will -disengage the casing from the shoe, compressingthe packing and forcing the tube intofengagement comprising a casing, a collar/ameri tos'a'id casing and forming a watertight connection' j therewith, aring. screwedLto]` YSaid collar, a.
shoe adapted to slide relative' tosaid casing toward said*i collar, a pin" fastening said shoe to saidy casing between .the collarand the adjacent end' thereof, aexibleitube connecting said ring and shoe and having :a watertight connection with the ring. anda ller disposed' between said casing and'slioe andbef tween said casing and tube whereby when said shoe is held from movementby,aconstriction inthe well the weight of'thefcasing will shear off the pin,.cornpressingthe pack;
