Description

J. L. DUNN. METAL COLLAR PAD. APPLICATION FILED 0CT.20. 1914.
1,136,780. Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
% .{STATES PATENT crimes. 1.
I. 1 J .i Q l AS DUN- 015. .ficoTLAND N NQBTE .CABQ N T all whom/it may concern Beit knownthat I, J AMES L. Dunn, a cit-v izen of the United States, residing at Scotland Neck, inthe county. of Halifax and State of North-Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Metal C-ollar-Pads; and I- hereby declare that the following is .a full, clear', and exact the collar, by interposing a metallic pad 'between the collar and the animals skin, such pad being preferably made of non-corrosive sheet metal, such as zinc or galvanized sheet metal, that will not absorb moisture and which will be cooling and hygienic and will protect the collar by keeping same dry and preventing absorption of moisture thereby and deterioration of the leather of the collar by salty exudations from the animals skin.
An essential feature of the invention is means whereby such pads can be readily and easily detached from or applied to a collar, and when attached will hold them in place so that the collar and attached pad can be handled as a unit if desired. The metallic pad membersextend over the inner shoulder engaging surfaces of the collar and such members might be separated, but are preferably flexibly united so that they will not become separated when detached from the collar. For this purpose each pad member is provided with spring clips adapted to engage the ordinary collar front roll and which enable them to be readily attached to or detached from collars of somewhat varying sizes.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a front view of an ordinary horse-collar with my improved pad attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the collar pad detached. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectioln through one of the collar and pad members,
illustrating the attachment of the pad to the collar. Fig. 4 is a detail view illustrating one means connecting the pad members; and Fig. 5 is a view illustrating another means connecting the pad members.
As stated, the pad is designed to be used in connection with an ordinary so called S 11cci fic aiion of Letters Iatent.
' of these clips might be varied according to horse-collar whichisillustrated in Fig. 1, sa1d collar having a front roll: 1 and a cush on roll 2, which are of ordinar'y construction, and against whichthe hames, not shown, are placedas usual. Y
The metallic pad members [3 are interposed between ithe sides .of-the collar and the shoulders ofthe animal, and areapproX- imately shaped to conform to the rear exterior surfaces ofthe collar, and cover so much .ofkthe surface of both the rolls 1 and 2 as might contact with theshoulders -ofthe animal. The outer edges .ofthe pad members extend suflioiently outward around the outer edge of=the"roll"2*td prevent contact o'f theleather of the collar with the animal, and the inner edges of the pad members extend sufficiently outward around the roll 1 to prevent contact of the material thereof with'the skin of the animal as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3. Each pad member 3 is detachably fastened to the collar by means of curved spring fingers 4 which as shown are rigidly attached to the inner side edge of the metallic pad and are bent to tightly clasp the front roll 1 on the exterior side as indicated in Figs. 1 and 3 and thus securely but detachably attach the pad members to the collar.
The pad is light inexpensive and easily attached to a collar; it will not absorb heat and moisture thereby eliminating the cause of .sore shoulders, whereas soft or leather collars or pads absorb heat and moisture and cause the shoulders of the animal to be come tender and sore. The metallic pad will not gum in hot weather and protects the leather collar from salty perspiration Patented Apia-20, .1915.

of the animals body which would cause the collar to become soft and lose its shape, and such pad therefore materially enhances the durability of the collar.
By the use of the spring clips at the pad members are readily detachable from or attachable to collars of different size, and the same pad can be used with either wide or narrow collars as the size of the front roll 1 is practically the same in all collars. I
have shown three clips 4 attached to each i 1 member in the drawings but the number the size of the pad and the stiffness with which it is desired to hold it to the collar.
In Fig. 1 the pads 3 are indicated as not connected. In Fig. 2 the pads 3 are shown as connected at top by a flexible member 5 a which may be of leather or other suitable comprising similar opposite members adapt ed to be interposed between the opposite sides of the collar and the shoulders of the animal; each member being formed of sheet,
metal shaped to cover and approximately conform to the inner surfaces" of the front roll and cushion roll of the related side of thecollar, and a set, of spring clips rigidly attached to the front edge of each member and bent to closely clasp the front roll of the collar and detachably attach the pad member thereto.
2. In combination with a horse-collarhaving front and cushion rolls of ordinary con- V struction; a collar pad comprising opposite members adapted to be interposed between the sides of the collar and the shoulders of the animal, each member being formed out of sheetlmetal shaped to cover andapproxiroll of the collar and detachably attach the pad member thereto; and a flexible. connec-- tion between said members, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
